FairyMom
We are going to do SOTW Volume 1 alongside Oak Meadow 3 (similar time period) for the fall. I was wondering what to cover over the summer for a prehistory study. I would love to cover the period of time before recorded history, but a quick overview. Any suggestions? Netflix movies, books, websites? We've been watching Terra Nova as a family and they are very fascinated by Earth before man.
Aurelia
The first world history unit of Intellego's K-2 world history covers prehistory, if you want activities and Internet links and things. We did Connect the Thoughts Starter prehistory and it was awful. I don't recommend it at all.
FairyMom
Intellego's K-2 world history looks like fun. Have you done that?
Aurelia
I haven't, but I wish I had found it when we did prehistory. We're using their astronomy unit now and Ariel likes it a lot. I am considering using their 3-5 world history next year, after reviewing SOTW1, since that's where we left off. Also, silly and fun, but still educational: Horrible Histories' Savage Stone Age sketches on YouTube. Ariel and I liked the show so much I bought the DVDs for the first two seasons. She knows more about the Celts and Romans from HH than she learned from SOTW.

This is for the summer, so silly and fun would be great, too. :D
MamaSheep
I have some recommendations posted here. If you poke around there are also some coloring pages and things you might find useful. :) Under each book there's a link for a "study chart". The charts divide the topic up into 8 or 9 segments, which would correspond with 8 or 9 weeks of study. The study charts for all of the books are broken up into the same segments, which makes it easy to see which bits of each book cover the same topics (at least roughly) so you can coordinate reading. The coloring pages and notebooking pages also correspond with the same study segments. Edited January 2, 2012 by MamaSheep
FairyMom
Wow, what a wonderful resource. Thanks for the link to your blog, Amy!
MamaSheep
Wow, what a wonderful resource. Thanks for the link to your blog, Amy! You're welcome. It's all a bit helter-skelter, and I don't get to work on it as often as I think I will. For example, I thought I'd have a good stretch of time to work on it during late winter and spring, but evidently I'll be coping with morning sickness instead. But I'll get stuff up there as I can. I have study charts worked out for some earth and space units too, but need to get them formatted and uploaded and all that jazz.
MamaSheep
I recently realized that a little while ago when some files accidentally got deleted from my blog, the links didn't reconnect when the files were re-uploaded. In particular I think the study charts were inaccessible. I apologize for any confusion this caused visitors. I've gone through tonight and (I think) made sure everything was reconnected. Also, for those who are interested, I added some new prehistory minibooks for making lapbooks. :) Again, sorry for the broken links.
*Lulu*
There is a Bill Nye book that the kids loved last time we did pre-history. Also, there is a book called Jurrasic Poop that was very informative, if in a gag inspiring way.
