tntgoodwin
Has anyone here used one of these centers? Specifically for Junior Kumon. The effectiveness of tutoring preschoolers aside, are these academically effective, for math and reading? We have a friend that is interested, and we are a little curious ourselves. Sandra in FL
I suggest you save your money and use some other math drill such as Calculadder, Mad Minute, http://www.sheppardsoftware.com (math facts) or some internet site to make up worksheets. tntgoodwin
It's not for the worksheets, it's for the center.
Mandy in TN
I work in the JK room at the local Kumon center. My oldest finished the Kumon reading program and my youngest is currently enrolled in Kumon math. At Kumon your child would do a placement test and then begin the program where he has mastery. Kumon will move him forward from that point. The approach is one of valuing the journey and encouraging persistence and dedication. To that end it is marathon not a dash. It is a patient program where speed and accuracy are used as indicators of the ability to move forward without difficulty. The reading program begins with vocabulary development (I say- You say), moves to phonics instructions, and then to reading comprehension. JK Kumon math teaches number recognition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, etc. There is no doubt that you can find something cheaper. Kumon is an ongoing fairly pricey (although not as pricey as our math tutor) journey, but the program is particularly useful for families where English is not spoken at home or situations or where the parent is unable or unwilling to provide instruction or when a parent needs to remove themselves from the equation due to frustration or confrontation. I see Kumon building confident, independent learners. It is a program that I value and it has worked for 2 of my 3 kids. Did you have any specific questions?
