Spelling Power vs A Reason For Spelling

I'm currently at the FPEA convention and I was looking at both of these books yesterday. I can't decide which one to get for my upcoming 2nd grader. Does anyone have any experience with either? If it makes a difference, DD7 is a very struggling reader.

Spelling Power's website says to use it for age 8 and up. Here is their readiness list:

  • At least 8 years old developmentally and academically;
  • Able to write each separate letter of the alphabet from dictation and can write some words without having to copy them;
  • Speaks and is able to read on at least a second grade level;
  • Can speak clearly and accurately pronounce most words;
  • Has a basic understanding of phonetic principles;
  • Is able to stay on-task for approximately five minutes; and
  • Asks about words and how they are spelled.

It sounds like something you wouldn't want to use with a 7 year old that is a struggling reader. You could hold off on spelling entirely until her reading is better. Some people don't start any spelling until 3rd grade.
