Need some ideas

If you found yourself facing the possibility of suddenly welcoming an 8th grader into your home and needed to put something together quickly and didn't have a lot of money to spend, what would you do?

I have nothing on hand for anyone above 3rd grade and I sure would appreciate some ideas. :001_smile:

One that my oldest enjoyed at that age (we pulled him out of public school at 12) was named something like "Learning Literature Through Movies". We watched ET, for example, and then there were a great range of things to discuss and practice, more that I would have thought possible. It was a fun way to learn while he was still de-schooling. It was inexpensive, too.

If he likes to draw, Mapping The World Through Art by Ellen J McHenry might be a good fit.

Barb at Harmony Art Mom and Handbook of Nature Study blogs has some reallygreat stuff for that age range, too, including a free geography program.

Math - khanacademy.com, maybe?

Do you have a library near by? I would get in the habit of making a weekly list online, then have kid walk or ride down to collect books. You could hit reading list, poetry, history, science, geography, personal interest. I'd check out book, audio books, classical music, dvds.

There have been some great threads here on free/nearly free curriculum. Definitely do a search.
