Has anyone done R&S 5 in 6th grade?

Recommended Posts

We have used R&S grammar since 2nd grade with ds10 and I am definitely planning on continuing at least through 7 or 8. However, I am thinking of taking a break from it for 5th grade. The concepts, diagramming, etc. are getting so much harder and although he has done fine in R&S4, I am thinking that R&S 5 might stick better in 6th grade. I don't know if taking a complete year off will do more harm than good (forgetting vocabulary, etc.) but I do think that he will understand it better by then and perhaps it will stick better. Just wondering if you have approached R&S at any time with a grade level other than the current one.

We do R&S grammar one grade "behind" the way they have it listed. IMO, R&S is so meaty that it can easily be considered one grade level ahead. In fact, my 8th grader is finishing up level 6 this year, and my 6th grader is finishing up level 5.

We did R&S 5th in 6th. When we came to R&S, dd was in 6th and we were coming from BJUP. We tried to go right into the 6th grade book and that was a bomb. I think it was better for dd to do 5th in 6th. She was ready for it then, if that makes any sense. She didn't finish it in 6th (cause we started late) so she finished it in 7th and then has done the 6th grade book over 7th and most of 8th this year. If she's behind, her test scores last year certainly didn't show it. She scored in the 90th percentile for Language Arts.

I think you'll be fine.
