Homonym (Same name): Same spelling, same pronunciation, different meaning.

I opened the can of soup. I can skate.

Homophone (Same sound): Different spelling, same pronunciation, different meaning.

He read the book. She bought red paint.

Homograph (Same writing): Same spelling, different pronunciation, different meaning.

The wind shook the trees. Please wind the clock.

Some sources also consider homonyms to be homophones and homographs, but not vice versa.

I have read at least one reference book that said they are all synonyms.

But generally, if you are doing lower elementary work that is what they are referring to.
