lauracolumbus
homophone, and other terms. I thought it was simple, but so many different websites conflict each other. Can anyone clearly explain the definitive differences. Thanks so much, Laura
JulieD
Homonym (Same name): Same spelling, same pronunciation, different meaning. I opened the can of soup. I can skate. Homophone (Same sound): Different spelling, same pronunciation, different meaning. He read the book. She bought red paint. Homograph (Same writing): Same spelling, different pronunciation, different meaning. The wind shook the trees. Please wind the clock. Some sources also consider homonyms to be homophones and homographs, but not vice versa. I have read at least one reference book that said they are all synonyms. But generally, if you are doing lower elementary work that is what they are referring to. Julie D.
