Books to Build On (Core Knowledge)

Recommended Posts

Having used the "What Your Xth-grader Needs to Know" books with my eldest son, I just bought the book

Books to Build On: A Grade-by-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers

Core Knowledge Series (1996)

by E. D. Hirsch Jr. and John Holdren

361 pages

It's good IMO. Like the WTM book, it reviews many books at each subject and grade level.

We used the Core Knowledge books too. They were wonderful!

Does this book include high school years, or is it just for elementary?

When we were doing the books, they said they were going to be coming out with 7th and 8th grade books to add to the series. We waited and waited, and checked and checked, but they never came to be. It would be great if they'd consider making them available in the future. :)

I wish they would too. We need more grades in this series. I love these books.

I used Books to Build On when I worked in our school's library. The suggestions are wonderful.

If you haven't seen it yet, you might like Core Knowledge's Realms of Gold anthologies for middle school and junior high.

Also, CK's Sequence offers suggestions for up to eighth grade. I have the bound Sequence book, but you can get a free download here:

Thank you! :)

We have "The New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy" by E.D. Hirsch, Jr.. It's not a reference book, it's just got a small blurb about a lot of different topics that everyone should know at least something about. I had planned on completing this book before high school, but her school requirements were more than I had anticipated, and it remains unused. :tongue_smilie: Maybe this year ...

It covers the elementary grades; however, some of the books may still interest an older child.

Kareni
