Computer question...

Recommended Posts

We have an older Dell computer (2003?) and only had it for 2 years or less before it went kapooey on us. I took it somewhere and they said the motherboard was fried. I never did anything else with it and didn't get a second opinion. It's been sitting in a closet. I'm in the process of transferring pictures from another old computer and thought about the Dell. Is it possible to retrieve anything or is it all a loss? Also, what is an affordable option to get a second opinion on it to find out for sure it's the motherboard?

Almost certainly you can get all your data off the old computer. To do that, you will need to remove the hard drive from the old computer and attach it to a working one. It's easier than it sounds. If you would like instructions, please tell us whether the old computer is a desktop or laptop and also whether the working computer is a desktop or laptop.

It's hard to say. November's coming up. That's the time of year when nice, new laptops can be had for $250 to $300. The $300 laptops we bought last year have been great so far...
