Handwriting/Copywork question

Where do you aim for with handwriting or copywork curricula? Do you target the current level or do you try to make it a little more difficult to challenge them a little?

 

My dd6 is just starting HOP 1st grade for reading. I was wondering if I should use A Reason for Writing K OR A? For copywork, would I include words with phonics rules she hasn't yet learned, or should I keep it where she's at?

Were it I, I would start with where she is at until she gets used to writing, then push a little higher. That way she experiences LOTS of success at the beginning.

I think that the handwriting/copywork is to cement things they have already learned. Not a way to teach new concepts.

 

But I have also had the best luck with exciting sentances from something we are reading aloud, and those are often much further along then the child is ready to read.
