O Pioneers-too mature for eighth grader (as a read-aloud)?

I adore this book, it's one of my all time favorites. I know SOTW AG recommends My Antonia for supplemental reading, but I just read it and it's not nearly as deep and satisfying as O, Pioneers, for me. I know OP has a story of temptation (that ends tragically, but innocently) and for my ds that is not too sophisticated or mature; what I'm wondering more is just if he'll "get it".
