Food coloring in M&M's

Recommended Posts

Anyone have, or can point me in the direction of list of which food coloring are used in each color of M&M's? I have found the ingredient list for M&M's in general but I'd like a breakdown of each color.

I suspect my dd might have a sensitivity to red #40 and have recently eliminated it from her diet. After a couple of days I noticed a marked improvement on her emotional outbursts. Then she went to a friend's house the other night and had M&M's. The friend's mom knew we were eliminating red food coloring and let her aet just brown and green ones. The emotional outbursts started back a couple of hours after she got home and all day the next day. So now I'm curious if there's red in the green and brown M&M's or if maybe she is sensitive to all food coloring.

I'm not angry with the friend"s mother BTW. She meant well and actually - It's interesting to see her reaction after being exposed to food coloring after removing them. It kind of confirms what I was suspecting.

I think Red Dye #40 is the most common one that some have trouble with, but the Yellow Dye is a close 2nd. Between the two, that covers almost everything with artificial colors in it. (I agree with the others, that it was likely brown that had red in it)

Have you found Yummy Earth yet? Organic suckers and drops that are free of artificial colors. They are very yummy!

www.yummyearth.com ( I don't work for them, I just love their stuff)

There is another brand that I found at the natural food store that is free of artificial colors, but the name escapes me right now.

As for a list of which colors in which M&M's, try emailing them. They should be able to respond pretty quickly, especially if you use the word "allergy".

Another vote for brown as the culprit. Red#40 is everywhere.

Have you tried SunDrops from Sunspire? They're candy-coated milk chocolate drops like M&Ms, but colored with food-based dyes. I haven't had them in years; but I remember a vaguely carob-y taste to them. Still, they're a decent substitute.
