Mandatory State Testing Idea Being Floated

Recommended Posts

from the Core Knowledge Blog - a link to a proposal.

The Core Knowledge people give some reasons why this might not be a good idea and have the links to the original articles.

Can we provide some facts in their comment section?

I have observed over the years that there is something of a niche for academics who position themselves as "experts" on homeschooling. Robert Reich did this about ten years ago and has been showing up as a homeschooling policy expert in articles and on tv frequently since then.

One one level, I don't have deep objections to a basic skills test. For example, I know many German homeschoolers would love to have the ability to homeschool in return for submitting test scores annually. But I have also seen that testing reveals little that I didn't already know and sometimes gives an inaccurate assessment of my kids' abilities.

And this doesn't even touch on the idea that he who controls the test content controls the direction of the education.
