I did not care for Easy Grammar. I found the teaching/explanation component of the program to be rather light. There is minimal parental involvement as long as dc understands the lesson fairly well. In that case, he/she just reads the information and completes the worksheets, which the parent can then check. The problem arose for us when he came across something that he did not understand. We ended up using EG as basically a set of supplemental worksheets to go with R&S.

In WTM, it has up to Level 4 Workbook for Writing With Ease, but I just went to the Peacehill Press website to check it out and could only find up through Level 2. Am I missing something? Looking in the wrong place?

On a plane. Yes, I know it's not that unusual. I see kids doing school work and lessons on the plane all the time.

I am supplementing Saxon 6/5 with Life of Fred Fractions for my ds10.

I consider my son a "normal speller," and we use AAS. It has really helped him understand why words are spelled the way they are. The program we used before AAS was a program that just sort of introduced lists of words and didn't really cover the spelling rules in depth. Ds does go through the steps fairly quickly, though.

I have TWSS and SWI-A. This program has really benefited my son. We watched the SWI-A disk first and practiced what Mr. Pudewa taught. I would then watch my part of the TWSS disk. This helped me see what to watch for as my son worked on his writing. I also watched the Tips & Tricks DVD. It has even more ideas and encouragement.

I have used both SL and TOG. We will be using SL Core 3 this fall, and I plan to add hands-on activities with some things from Winterpromise. We did core 1+2 this past year, and my son loved the books except the sad ones. So, this might be an issue if your children are sensitive.
We will not be continuing with TOG. I wanted so much to like it, but it was not a good fit for us. I know a lot of people really love it, but I for one did not relish all the planning and did not find it streamlined at all. I really struggled with keeping up our pace (and no, we did not try to do too much) and wading through the teacher's notes, etc. Having said that, my son did enjoy the reading selections.

I started with R&S 3 with my 4th grade ds, following the advice to start one below grade level. It has worked out great for us! My son has really learned a lot with this program. They do have writing assignments. We don't do all of them because I also use IEW for a writing program. Lately, my son has been asking to do grammar first every day!:lol:

We are on Level 3 and still going through one step every day for the most part. There have been a couple lessons that we needed to redo, but for the most part we just go through at a fast clip. I do quite a bit more review of the phonogram, sound, and key cards though than the book suggests.

The information on the Colors website all states a Spring 2009 release. Has it been pushed back further and the website not updated?

When someone asks my son this, he just answers with whatever grade comes to his mind at that moment. It has been our experience that he can answer with a grade outrageously above or below what would be the norm for his age range, and he gets no reaction whatsoever!

They have a lot of languages to choose from. I haven't actually tried it out on my ds yet, but I think it would be a good method of finding out how interested the dc is before spending the $$.

I love Easy Grammar.
I used Rod & Staff English with my son this year. Some have commented that it is dry, but my son actually loved it. It is black and white and no frills, so perhaps that is where some of those comments arise. I had also ordered Easy Grammar and didn't care for it. It also did not have any diagramming in the level that I used, and I don't know if it has in other levels. I ended up using the worksheets from Easy Grammar to supplement Rod & Staff. I have to say that he has learned a lot with R&S, down to correcting any double-negatives in my speech!:D

I don't have a whole list, but my son is sitting beside me right now reading one of the Tom Swift books. He LOVES them! The first one in the series is Tom Swift and His Motor Cycle.

The phonogram CD is not necessary. Actually, it was not even available when my ds started level 1. The phonogram cards that are included with the program clearly indicate how to pronounce the sounds and give examples. For example, the phonogram card for the letter "A" will indicate the 3 sounds for the letter and give examples like apple, acorn, art. (Those 3 examples are not the ones actually given on the card...at least I don't believe so).
The teacher's manual, however, I would consider critical! It provides the lesson script and spelling rules.
BTW, I also started my 3rd grader with level 1 just to cover our bases and am happy I did. It gave him a solid foundation, and he progressed through the level quickly, which boosted his confidence.

Can I ask how your daughter does with her writing assignments? That is, what strengths/weaknesses do you perceive that she has? I am asking because I think that certain programs perhaps suit better depending on what the child struggles with.
