  1. ok, i posted earlier about doing american story 1 with a 2nd grader and a kindergartener, but i am concerned about it being too much for my younger one.

if i did animals and their world, it would be perfect for both, only it's not exactly going to cover history. if you have done this program, did you do anything for history and what did you use?

i'm just wondering because if i choose to do AW, then i would do AS1 next year, but then i'm not sure what to do for history this year.

i would really appreciate any input on this, thank you! :)

  2. This is my situation and sentiment exactly. We are doing AW this year - DD6 is so excited and DS5 will enjoy it I think. We are also doing a US geography "study".

Then next year I will either do American History with either WP AS1 or HOD Beyond (I already have HOD Beyond, so that should be an easy decision but I am sure I will have to order/check out AS1 anyway because I love WP and HOD!)

And yes, you can make AW plenty challenging for a 2nd grader :) There are lots of book suggestions and activities that that age would enjoy. In fact, we are using many of the older resources, just watered down a bit for DS - but only mainly because he was past the dot-to-dot and Animal Alphabet stage :) (he is reading/decoding multiple syllable words)

thanks for your input! i'm just thinking animal world really doesn't have anything to do with history. can i ask what you're using for history?

  3. thanks for the help :)

animal world does sound sound great, i'm just not sure if my second grader would like to study animals the whole year.... but i would like to keep them together and this would definitly not be over my 5 year olds head. did you get it yet? does it seem challenging and fun for a 2nd grader?

  4. i'm looking into winterpromise the american story 1 for my dd7. i also have a son who will be in kindergarten, and i'm wondering if i can combine them with this program? i would like to keep them together wherever possible so i can avoid teaching the same thing a year or two later. i would just like to know, if any of you did that, how did that work out for you?

    thanks!

  5. Hi,

I finally made up my mind and decided to do SOTW Vol 1. I kept changing my mind about where to start with history. But anyway, I was wondering the same thing about wether or not to add more Geography, and I decided to add Daily Geography by Evan-Moor.

  6. It should be mostly stuff you have around the house, but every house is different! If you pm your email address, I'd be happy to send you the list of materials needs for the whole year. That way you can look over it yourself to be sure ;).

    i pm'd you!

  7. Just thought I'd pipe in about Elemental Science :D, you can view the sample here. For Earth Science and Astronomy, you could purchase the two Usborne books and the two Janice VanCleave books. The remaining books you could get from the library because you only use them for a week or two. The Kingfisher books you could omit OR there is a chart on my yahoo group that gives corresponding pages in the Usborne Internet-linked Science Encyclopedia(which is used in the next two programs). That said, the program is flexible enough to be done with just library books, but it would take some additional work on your part. Hope that helps!

Thank you! That does sound like it's what I'm looking for! :) As for the experiments, is it all things that I should already have lying around or will there be some things I need to buy?

  8. i'm planning on using real science odyssey and have been looking at the book list. it's a very long list! if you used the earth and space science program, which books do you think i should get?

also, is there a science curriculum for earth and space that just uses one or two books? we love books, but they are expensive!

  9. i'm thinking about using the booklist on tanglewood education for 2nd grade. wondering if anyone used this and supplemented with other books? if, yes, could you share which ones? also, what version of robin hood would you recommend? the one on their list is not available anymore. thanks for any help!

  10. hi,

i'm planning on trying the real science odyssey for science. i printed out the trial pages. just wondering if anyone has used it and what your experiences were. thanks :)

  12. i saw a few sample pages at christianbook.com and i liked them. i think if i do decide, i'll supplement with other books related to the time period, but there seems to be more than enough activities to do, as far as i can tell.

i think i read somewhere the teachers guide is recommended, but not required.
