  1. If you live in Pittsburgh, one car turns left before anyone goes straight! We were honked at a lot before we learned that unwritten "rule".

For everywhere else, I said that it depends. I wait at the light if I think that I could get stuck in the intersection and not be able to turn. I enter the intersection if I think that I can zip left between cars.

  2. My daughter took Explore and the ACT in 6th grade. She took the Explore even though she had topped it out, because it gave her a positive experience. She took the ACT so that we could get a better picture of where she is at. Interestingly, my daughter thought that the math in the ACT was less stressful than Explore. With Explore, she was "expected" to know it all, but with the ACT she could skip problems that she didn't understand. Our prep for the ACT consisted of looking at the practice problems and showing her which ones to skip without even trying (i.e. any thing with trig. functions.)

ETA: Actually, there is no penalty for guessing in the ACT, so she didn't skip problems, but made a random guess.

  3. Thanks so much for these reviews.

Heather (either one :001_smile:), is it possible to do CW without using the grammar? Or just doing it as a brief review? My son has a great grammar program that he has been doing since 2nd grade, which I don't want to switch. However, he has not done any diagramming, so that would be something we could use from CW.

I just don't want to get an integrated program, take out 1/2 of it, and be left with something that makes no sense.

Also, when does the grammar drop out and the "theory" part turn into Traditional Logic?

    Ruth in NZ

I'm not a Heather, but I can answer this. You can easily do CW with your own grammar program. Harvey's is scheduled into CW, but that is a separate book. There is some grammar integrated into studying the models, but you will probably find those very useful for practical application. Grammar continues through Diogenes. (We are currently i Diogenes, Chreia.) Traditional Logic is scheduled in at the next level.

  4. I believe CO is "moderate" because of requirements over and above notification -- states that only require a notice of intent are listed as "low regulation" states.

So what do the tests/evaluations look like? are they provided by the school systems? Do you have to submit scores? If you join a private school can you avoid this?

    TIA!

The testing is not a big deal. You can chose any standardized test, like Iowa Basic.

  5. I just researched all of the options for my father who lives in a rural area. They don't have DSL or cable TV, but do have satellite TV. It came down to three options--two from wireless providers. My dad lives near an AT&T cell tower, so that became the obvious choice--lots of other providers have no coverage where he lives (I can't use my cell phone at all.) AT&T (and Verizon) have either an option to make a hot-spot connection with your computer or they have a wireless MiFi that can support up to 5 computers (or smart phones). For my dad, the second option was best. The third option was a dish from Wild Blue. I have heard of many people who are dissatisfied with their performance, however. Also, the equipment costs were even higher than the wireless phone options.

  6. We are just starting Classical Mythology with Vandiver. She is really interesting! You do need to look out for mature topics (think Freud and Oedipus). After 3 lectures, we're hooked.

Just listened to one lecture so far of Origins of Great Ancient Civiliations with Harl. That lecture was interesting with lots of good pictures and maps. He says "um" a lot though. I need to listen to more lectures before I can give it a solid recommendation.

  7. I vote for logic stage and annoying. Seriously I saw all of the questioning start around nine as well. She had always asked lots of questions but now she started questioning me. At 12, it has definitely gotten worse. I have gradually added in logic stage questions to our literature and history but nothing formal. Now, in 7th grade, we are diving in to formal logic stuff. It feels like the right timing.

  8. I use Photoshop Elements to create my scrapbook pages. (It's the baby version of Photoshop.) I purchase digital products from the on-line stores. I often buy from Scrapbook Graphics and DSP. Many of these on-line stores have some freebies to get you started.

Most people make square pages, although a few people might do letter-size. I make them 12 x 12 and then I can print them at any other smaller square size. If I don't need the best quality I print 8 x 8 on my Epson laser printer. I have also had prints made to put into a standard scrapbook like those that you can buy at Michaels.

I just had my first book printed with about 30 pages at a 10 x 10 size. On sale it was around $50. Books are expensive, but they are also very beautiful.

  9. I totally understand how you feel, I'm waiting for our appraisal today. Even though I know that cleanliness doesn't matter, I still had the house perfect. We are hoping to refinance and get an interest rate that is half of our current one. But if the house value has come down too far, we might not be able to get the loan we want.

We paid $495 for our appraisal.

Our previous appraisals always came out at exactly what the bank needed. I have a feeling that won't happen this time.

  10. No, I'm not offended by some sassy-titled math books. Danica McKellar is invested in girls in mathematics. The titles would have never appealed to a (admittedly math phobic) teenage me, but I'm sure they do to some.

And I find RR to be really difficult to navigate to actually find a single item. I've entered actual titles of books, and returned no results, only then to have to sort through categories until I find the book I entered.

    :iagree:

I don't like these math titles at all, but I got them for my math-hating dd and she loves them. I'd cover up the title pages, but that would just draw more attention to them. There isn't anything trashy in the books, but they are silly and trying to make math cool. She reads them for fun and has picked up some really good pointers. For her "real" math, she is doing Life of Fred--another language-based math.

I also find RR hard to search. I usually buy from RR once a year, but I do most of my shopping at Amazon.

  11. would you use this for 4x6 prints or more for bigger sizes. I have never heard of metallic paper. Could you explain what it is?

You can use this on any size print. When I first purchased from them, I got a print in regular and in metallic. The metallic paper just makes the photo so vibrant. It seems to glow (but it isn't shiny). I now pay extra for my special photos to be on metallic.

  12. How long can you leave your doggie without them going potty? Do most of you crate train your 'babies'?

We are home tons. We aren't a super busy family, but there are times where we will go on field trips, or to a friend's house for a bit.

Do you take your pooch to WM? :D

My dogs were trained to use a puppy pad. When we got cats this past year, my dog actually started using the litter box! He goes outside too.
