  1. Thank you all for your replies! I have been at my daughter's play for the last couple of days and kind of got sidetracked. I am liking the idea of a 6 month lease. That met be good with a clause to break it and pay a penalty. Still having zero luck on a three month lease.

We are looking at Gunter, VanAlstyne south to McKinney, Parker, Allen etc and all that area where there is a little bit of room. In Gunter/VanAlstyne there are still houses that don't actually go under contract the second they hit the market. It is nice, you have like a whole week before they go under contract! However, we want a bunch of nice stuff (shop, pool, guest quarters) and we want it all for cheaper than it generally comes at. 😂😂. We have seen a couple with what we want and at the price we want to pay but it was before we had our sea legs and knew what area we wanted to be in. We will see what happens! My husband said a big NO on the RV. So, we are still looking and praying. I am excited to get there. I am not sure why it is so darn popular there but I do like what is there and the people seem very cool so, yay!

  2. 3 Lasy bugs, I am considering that. We actually have done that in the past. My husband really doesn't want to do that again (he works out of the house--or in that case "house". It is getting to the point where it makes more sense! I just wondered if anyone has ideas other than that because with the two dogs and three cats and t kids and working out of the house--it's not ideal! I am still just open to any and all options.

  3. It has been a while since I have been on here but this is often the place I go when I need advice.

We sold our house in Missouri and are moving to Dallas--ok--north of Dallas. We are looking for acreage and the things we are looking for are avaiable but few and far between. We need time! We have looked into renting houses or apartments and -- short term--there is nothing. No one wants to rent short term. Long term hotel with 4 kids, two dogs and three cats--8 grand a month!

Does any one have any ideas? We would rather not settle until we find the right home and the summer is just ramping up so we really don't want to rent a house or apartment for 6 months or a year--the right house is right around the corner! We just do need to go somewhere! Any thoughts or ideas? I am getting too old for this!

  5. I just want to go through the cards and do some of the recommended reading on the cards.  What would be the top overall books you would get to do that.  I see Streams of Civilization a lot, Kingfisher and the Famous Men series.  What else would be good?  I am mostly doing the ancients and also the middle ages if that makes any difference.  I don't need to hit every single card with reading, just a good majority without owning every book in the universe!

    Thanks!

  6. The following sentence is SO true! Thank you for your perspective on this with the driving and the heads up on the smell. We just like to be on acreage and my husband really wants a shop. That is the only place we could find that. Plus the property taxes are lower up there. I am actually talking about that while country quadrant up there. We are accustomed to living out a ways on some property.

FYI, 'green' is code for 'high humidity' and/or 'lots of rain'.

I've lived in Richardson, Whitewright, and Bells. My kids were born in Sherman and Gainesville. If you use Google Maps you can see that those all fall in that Dallas/North of Dallas area. I've driven through Anna plenty of times (driving from Bells to the University of North Texas twice a week... everything is bigger in Texas includes the distances people drive to places). I'd be more worried about my kid driving on the highways in Dallas than around Anna. That said, it took a bunch of driving experience before I didn't hate multi-lane busy highways. There is the one traffic light somewhere near Anna near the dump that is a little tricky to learn how to decide whether to brake or keep going when you see the light turn yellow (the speed limit was at least 55mph, which is not a speed that most people are familiar with having traffic lights with). I think they were putting in another traffic light around the time we moved though as well as lowering the speed limit around there, but I don't recall. Speaking of that dump, at times things smelled pretty badly around that stretch of high way (not sure if that's related to the dump or something else, but my nose doesn't care why things smell bad, just that they do). Overall, Anna never appealed to me.

One thing you have to keep in mind wrt homeschooling stuff is that the DFW metroplex is huge. Cool homeschool stuff in central Dallas may or may not be too far for your comfort if you live in Anna. And stuff in McKinney may be not worth the hassle if you live in downtown Dallas and you'd have to battle all the traffic either. So, while I'm sure there must be cool homeschooling things in the area, you may find that many are just too far away to do on a regular basis. And having to stay inside all summer because you'd otherwise just melt isn't so great either.

I haven't been to North Carolina, so I can't say anything about that.

  7. We are looking to move and, at this point, these are the top contenders. We visited Dallas and really like it there. We really like the dryer climate. Is it usually pretty dry there?

Raleigh is beautiful. We live in a very humid climate now and my poor son does not do well in it. I am concerned that it is going to be really humid like it is here in southwest Missouri.

(I have looked at charts and graphs that detail humidity in different areas but I don't think you really know until you have been somewhere a while.)

Has anyone lived in or at least visited either? I am trying to get a picture of what it is like to live there and homeschool there. Obviously, humidity is a concern but I would love any information you have!

  8. Hi all,

We are going to Disney World very soon and I have issues about Fast Passes. I don't know what rides we want to go on!  I don't know what is popular!  I don't know where stuff is so how can I know when I want to go on what ride?

No, I don't want to look at maps, study each ride and educate myself on which rides are most popular.  Why does is have to be so much work?  Can't we just get in line for one we want to go on and if the line is super long, sign up for a later time to go on it?  Is that the same thing as a Fast Pass or is that something else?  There is already so much planning for all of this and I have been pretty good so far but the Fast Pass thing is just setting me over the edge a bit!

  9. We have been watching the show with the Property Brothers, I think it is Buying and Selling. The show is so formulaic it is always the same 10k for the fix up to be done in two weeks but every time the people act so surprised that it will be 10k and it is going to take two weeks. Haven't they watched the show before?! Duh! Methinks it may be scripted. (Shhh, I know it actually is). But we like that show anyway. Also, they do like 25k worth of work for 10k so I wish they would quit whining! Oh and we just recently spent almost two years living in the midst of a remodel (the gut to the studs kind). It was pretty hard at times and I never want to do it again but the people on there are so wimpy, they fall apart when they are remodeling for two weeks. I do kind of wish they would mix things up a bit.
