  1. Your kids are in 8th grade then? Firstly, I think both actives counted as volunteering. If they continue with dram or/ and music in high school, maybe you can put those twp experiences under extracurricular.

I didn't count any volunteering or extracurricular that DC did before 9th grade on their transcript or resume, unless that is an academic course that deserves a high school credit.

  2. Two in the same day sounds fine. My DD did that; she took physics and math in the same session. Much better than ruining more Saturdays with testing.

I do not know whether they would let you take a one hour break; I doubt it, because they will give you the test booklet that has all the tests at the beginning of the session, and you could have presumably looked at something and would then have extra time to ponder. Also, I would imagine a student would want to get it over with and not sit there for an hour idle.

If I recall correctly, you can do them in any order you want.

DS  took chemistry and physics same day. Like regentrude said, you cannot take an hour break in between the tests. It has to be back to back. There is no order assigned for SAT subjects since they will give you the whole booklet. So you can take up to any tests in any order you want on that day.

  3. AP English Language yesterday...anyone else's kids feel like it was super easy?  40 kids took that test yesterday here, and all of them were mad because it "didn't require any advanced English stuff."  They felt like all of the practice tests were way harder than the actual test.

DS said he was bored while taking AP English Lang yesterday. I don't know whether it is a good sign.

  4. It is funny. DS #4 read me Rikki Tikki Tavi, I don't know, 10 times only today? While I was washing dishes after lunch, while I was making dinner, while I was in the bathroom. You name it.

What is this obsession between boys and snakes, and oh, other deadly stuffs? Good thing our Petsmart is next to grocery shop. When kids beg to go in there, I say "ice cream will melt if we don't go home now". Snakes or ice cream? Hmmmm.

  5. Joining this late, but I wish everyone the best as AP exams continue!  So much going on here; it's crazy!  We start the 5 AP exam stint tomorrow morning bright and early! :)  I am both thrilled (for her) and a little sad or nostalgic (for me) that this is my last set of AP work with oldest DD who is headed to university this fall.

    GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!

My DS #1 took two AP tests this week and will take the last one next week. At this moment I feel more emotional than worried about his score. It was DS who wanted to take more AP's as a senior even though we all knew that these won't effect his admission to the college- as long as he doesn't mess them up. Who knew I'd be emotionally attached to AP tests?

I still remember his very first AP test day. How nervous we were. How I walked him to the office of local HS. How I anxiously waited his call asking me to pick him up from school. At this point, anything we've done routinely brings back too much memories.

  6. I'd have DD call Duke and affirm that it is her first choice school. Then explain about the scholarship.

Last year, my friend was able to knock down significant amount of her DS's first choice school tuition after talking to financial aid office. All these selective schools have wiggle room when it comes to $$. What about you go to Blue Devil Days and talk to financial aid in person?

  7.   He was very lucky in the admissions game this year, garnering acceptances to Harvard early action, Yale, Columbia as a John Jay Scholar, Berklee college of music with merit aid, and UNC with a full-ride scholarship.

This is a nice surprise for me. I've always had feeling that Yale is one of those not-so-homeschooler-friendly schools. Way to go!

  8. I don't know about my DS. He is a very steady guy. Even- tempered and hardly insists his way. He can be predictable yet sometimes hard to read. Even for him, April might be bit tough. Decisions to be made, colleges to revisit, tests to be prepare. He still has three more AP tests in May.

On the other hand, I am totally exhausted. I try to drag myself into planning summer or next year for the rest of DC, but it is not easy to focus. I need a vacation. Relaxing on the beach will do me good.

  9. DS found out today that he was accepted to Stanford.

    I'm pretty much in shock.

There is a very real possibility that we won't be able to swing it financially, but how incredible that he was accepted.

Wow, congratulations! That is great news. Happy for you.

  10. I wanted to say this for a while, but couldn't find a right thread or place so far. Since we are talking about CC, I'd like to express my gratitude for this forum.

I understand that many of you are long timers in this forum.  As for me, even though I knew about this site, it took a long time to actually register myself here. Maybe it's got to be with the fact that we don't have cable and don't have a social media account. Knowing too much what is going on or putting myself out there scares me to death. After all, we are homeschoolers and supposed to be antisocial, right? My first motivation to join was to get some information about college admission procedure for my then-rising-senior DS. It was very recent that I started actually post things and I shyly admit that I did it to get out of "larvae" status. (Hope you all understand. We all have been a "larvae" once.)

Now I realize that this forum gave me more than I asked for. Especially through this strenuous college admission process, this place has been my source of information, personal space to vent my frustration, and exit for all of my emotions. We kept all about college application to ourselves. So far how many school my DS was accepted or rejected, I didn't share with anybody outside of family. Not even with my church friends. When people asked us about what is going on, we would say that when all results are in, we will gladly share. I did it to keep our sanity and lower anxiety level as much as possible. And of course there were expectation and/ or rivalry(?) issue.  But this emotional roller coaster ride wasn't an easy thing to hold within myself. I found myself coming to this place everyday, read about other people's life and often left with the bigger picture.

All of you helped me tremendously to ease the pain-if there is any- through this time and give me good cheers so I can go on. So thank you!

p.s) Hope you understand what I am saying. I have DS6 next me doodling on his math book now. Gotta go.

  11. DS got in Georgetown on Monday and Duke today. Duke totally took us by surprise. I am literally :crying:. Duke acceptance letter says that they had 34,000 applicants for 1,700 places in the first year class this year. I don't know if I can survive another 24 hours of waiting.
