  1. Ok - I skimmed over a lot of the posts.

I am wondering if at the K level at the school you may have to sign a statement of faith/belief. I know at a church run K here we would have had to and I didn't want to - so child didn't go there. At the PRE-K level, same school, you didn't have to because they didn't DO any religious schooling.

They might also need to state that they are a "Catholic in Good Standing" to attend the school. These things we do not know.

Then - who contacted the media? The parents I bet. That smells fishy to me. Honestly - the school probably states they can turn down applicants based on beliefs and conflicts of interest. That's just me....

  2. I have decided "sunshine" is more distracting to my kids than music ;) Both have iPods and I have no problem with them listening to what they want AS LONG AS the work they have to do is done correctly and within a reasonable amount of time.

Everyone in my house seems to have earphones attached to their head a lot of the time (including me who usually has a book or 2 going!)

  3. We just started - and are now going into week 4. We are actually combining a couple of weeks to finish out this unit a little quicker. Our plan is to finish Unit 2 by the time our local PS is out for the summer so we can finish TOG 1 by the en of the summer and start TOG 2 during a regular school year :) Ok - that's just the plan.....

DS (age 13) is in 7th and doing level-D on his own. He knows his assignments and finishes them. We do discussions altogether (UG & D) as we are going through it. At this time we are not doing a set time for discussions, it just hasn't worked out that way.

I don't have a LG student - but I bet they would love some of the books that UG is reading! Even I enjoyed Pepi and the Secret Name ;) I also think the reverse would be true - the UG students would probably like some of the LG level books!

  4. I would feel uncomfortable with an older boy in the ladies room. I understand safety - I have a 13 year old boy.... but I also have 2 teen girls (14 & 16) who have serious issues because of what has happened in their lives.... it would completely upset them and possibly harm them if a boy saw them at all or had potential to while they were in a stall. Just another view point.....you don't know the girls in the bathroom and their history. If you were to bring an older child in, I might suggest announcing it to the people in the bathroom first as they will probably understand - but at the same time give them some time to finish.

  5. Ok - I'm going to be the one that says it really doesn't work for us. I tried. It worked fine when we were using Seton at the beginning of the year. That was easy enough because everything was workbooks.

When we went back to the more eclectic style, it would never click in place right. So now - we have 2 boxes up on the main floor; 1 has their books, the other is where they are supposed to turn in assignments. Still it doesn't always work.

But I don't see us going back to the workboxes.....they never wanted to go in the order I put them in anyways...

  6. DD is thrilled with Life of Fred...she carries it around with her everywhere....

BUT her basics aren't 100% down-pat yet, so I'm looking for other story-books to reinforce some of those things...

Such as: Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi (I have that one and a few other of that series coming in at the library).....

Any others? Something that maybe does multiplication?

  7. DD 10 4th grade etc..... doing UG and enjoying it a lot. She is getting a lot out of it (more than I thought she was) by me giving her the "Evaluations" every week.

What she likes is that she can do the work on her own without me standing over her. The readings my son is doing (level D) would be too much for her on her own. She wouldn't enjoy them as much in my opinion.

  8. What age is he? My son has some SERIOUS issues some days...... my mother will "quiz" him all the time and then state "He doesn't know this...." when I know in fact he does know it and knows it well.

I think it might depend on the curriculum as well. My DS cannot get into workbooks no matter how much I have tried. Now we only use them for Math & LA, but I allow him to pick certain things. He wants to do Biology next year - so I'm letting him.

Part of his school is videos -- why? Because he likes them! I don't ask for perfection - I ask for effort. I NEVER reward with "prizes"...... do a good job - I'll flaunt your paper or your work all over the internet and inside my house.....which totally puffs up the ego enough.

Making him feel "in control" of some of his school has really changed his attitude about it as well. It's working out nicely. He can't say "he didn't know" because HE SCHEDULED IT!!

I wish her luck and hugs for patience :)

On this thread - I posted what I am now using each week to plan out each kid. I edited it a little bit as I added in Writing Aids and will add Spelling power in next week. But it doesn't take me that long to do at all once I get started.

Just something to pass on with using TOG with multiple levels and multiple kids :)

Once I get everything set up (we are tweeking math right now and a couple other things) - I plan on doing 4 weekly schedules at once so I only plan 1x per month.

  10. The CLE workbooks - simple and it works. My kids like workbooks... but they didn't get anything out of LifePacs... they ARE getting stuff out of the CLE workbooks - in less than a month my dd is whizzing through diagramming and even correcting one of our foster girls on her word use.

I found them very similar in WHAT they teach. CLE combines spelling in with it - but we are using Spelling Power because honestly - they STINK at spelling :)

  11. Ok - we just started TOG Year 1. Starting next week (week 4 unit 1) the Bible is also used for History as well as "Bible Class"

I spent 3 hours reserving books from the library (our library is awesome - but their search function REALLY needs to be updated) and ordering from online sources (used etc). We are doing UG & D and so far my UG level kid LOVES the books. She gets up and starts reading the books before other stuff.

I LOVE the Teacher notes - I can handle both kids learning the exact same topics during the week - it is so helpful for me. I'm not sure if VP has the different grades running parallel - but this is huge. You should HEAR the topics at our dinner table some nights - personally I've had it with "mummy making" ;)

Now that I either have all the books or have them reserved, it takes me about 30-45 minutes per week to go through and put each weekly schedule together. This includes planning math, LA, etc. We do use Writing Aids - so I have to look that over as well and plan for that.

We aren't HUGE Ancient fans.... the kids think it's cool - but they are ready to start moving on to something other than Egypt so I'm not sure how they would feel if it was an entire year of Egypt KWIM?

Oh - we do add in the VP History cards (once I get around to laminating them) so you CAN mix some of that in there as well...

  12. Thanks everyone - she is very science minded.... she love it and living on a farm she really gets ahead a lot and does it on her own. When your daughter comes and tells you she is done with all the lower level Apologia books you kind of start wondering where to go :) She likes the narrative way the books go and she was looking at the 1st mod online and said that if she were to hear it (because of the funny scientist names) she would do better and I tend to agree.

  13. My daughter is very science oriented she has been through all the Apologia books multiple times just reading them for fun etc. She LOVES science and personally I see her going into a science field such as being a vet or even into Marine Biology.

She is interested in doing Apologia's General Science over 2 years or she said "unless I get it done earlier."

I went to Donnayoung.org and she suggests NOT doing it with someone under 6th grade (she's technically in 5th next year).

I was thinking for her it might work out well with the audio CD as well as the book since she is an auditory learner.

She does really well with scientific names and such....

Just a debate in my head right now while sales are going on ;)

  14. I know my son would love to work on stuff like that and I would love for him to have a class in it. We owned a computer store for 12 years before we moved to the farm, so we are total geeks ;) Personally I hope I do create a monster with it and he follows through. Back in 1990 when I went to college for it, it was scary as I knew more than the teachers and so I walked out of the classes and never looked back.
