  1. I was trying to get some ideas to see what others may be using for reading with their 3rd graders. I have the pathway readers but he is just reading through them. Other than library books, what do some of you do to improve vocab, comprehension and strengthen reading skills?
  2. Thank you for that advice because we are on a tight budget and I would hate to have to buy a second level if they go through the first one fast.
  3. Ok that's what I suspected since there are rules to cover. Which they really haven't learned at all with Spelling workout. That would simplify things for me to just get one level now to start everyone in. Thank you so much!
  4. My son has been using spelling workout for spelling but is just checking boxes and filling in blanks. Not really learning much spelling. My 6 year old is starting 1st this year and instead of another round of spelling workout, I am thinking of trying out AAS with her. I was wondering if I couldn't just get level one and teach them both at the same time. Would that work with the way it's set up? Maybe then see where my 8 year old is and move him through faster to the next level if he is beyond that? I didn't want to have to spend the extra money on two levels and also was worried about gaps in his spelling with this program if it builds through the levels. What do you guys think? Also, I have an 8th grade boy who is very reluctant to do school because he is really into working on his project cars, hunting, shooting etc....school drives him crazy now so spelling workout is easy for me to give him a workbook and say do these sheets but, I am worried that he is just frantically filling in boxes to get it done and not learning how to spell well. Would there be an easy way to plug him into the AAS program that wouldn't be too intense or take too much time? Just brainstorming how to improve our spelling results. My older girls thrived on the Spelling workout workbook approach. My younger kids aren't absorbing it or learning much it seems. Thanks. Julie Smith
  5. Oh thanks everyone. That's what I was thinking but was going to check to see if there are other good options. Thanks a bunch!
  6. Anyone have recommendations for the best place to buy Saxon math 1 and 3 workbooks and meeting books. I have the teacher manuals. Also, AAS? I was trying to do this in one order to combine shipping. I know there's a ton of places to get Saxon, just thought I'd check to see if anyone had a favorite place. Rainbow Resource is the biggest one that comes to my mind at the moment. Thanks!
  7. I have Artistic Pursuits but of course it's packed in the Art box in the storage trailer. Ah. I hate this being in limbo waiting for our house to sell so we can start working on our new one. Maybe I will dig it out and try to make tie for art too. As long as the basics seem to be covered I will feel better.
  8. I have a 1st and 3rd grader again this year and in our whirlwind of trying to sell a house, build a house, get my senior through her last year of school, marry off my oldest next month, and keep the 8th grader on track, I am needing help with ideas so I don't forget something for 1st and 3rd grade. I Usually have all of my curriculum on the shelf but since we moved, everything is in storage so I may need some recommendations. This is what I have so far, Saxon Math 1st and 3rd FLL for the 1st grader and OPGTR Language Lessons for 3rd grade OR I may need to use Rod and Staff 3 if that is what I find first in storage. I like the way prepositions are taught in Language Lessons but my last son that went through this was bored and liked R&S. WWE 1 and 3 I have been using Spelling workout but thinking of switching them to All About Spelling because my 3rd grader is just checking boxes and not learning spelling rules with that workbook approach I have Tapestry of Grace for my older kids but have been thinking of using SOW with my younger kids because it's been so hard to blend them into history and geography with my older kids. I have several Apologia science for elementary texts but open to any better suggestions since that is alot of reading and again they loose interest so it doesn't get done. thanks for any suggestions or ideas to help me get a handle on how to get started with these guys. Having my whole homeschool library in storage has shut down my brain. :)
