  1. There is so much info. and so much of the info. is contradictory! This is a constant struggle for me, too.

I just know what my favorites are because they make sense to me:

Healthy Cooking for Kids by Shelly Null

    Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon

8 Weeks to Optimum Health by Andrew Weill

Also I have a list on my fridge of the Dirty Dozen (top 12 foods that you should buy organic if you can). I buy organic milk and eggs and try to buy as much organic produce as I can afford. I give my kids a multi-vitamin and cover them in prayer.

That's about the best I can do with the information (and money) I have been given.

  2. We used to only buy Smucker's brand natural. It was by far the best tasting. Just peanuts and salt. But recently we tried Aldi's brand of natural and it is just as good as Smucker's! (And much cheaper).

I let it sit on the counter for a few minutes to warm up and then spread. You just get used to it after a while.

Now Jif tastes like plastic to me.

  3. Sorry, but I have to agree with Amy G.

We have a major mean girl neighbor situation and we did confront the parents, almost exactly as you phrased. Their response: "Don't you think you're being a little overprotective? It sounds like to me they are just being girls."

Now this has furthered our stigma in the neighborhood as that "weird family that homeschools" and whose kids live in a bubble. They will hardly even acknowledge us anymore when we wave or walk by.

If I had it to do over again I would reinforce the idea with my dd that not every family has the same rules as ours and try to encourage the playing at our house only, so I or DH could keep an eye on things.

That's just my opinion. Maybe you will have better luck that we did.

This is just one of the many challenges that come with choosing to live a different kind of life.

    Good luck.

  4. We lived in Jerusalem for three years and the DVDs were region 2. U.S. DVDs are region 1. We didn't have a t.v. and we watched DVDs on our computer. MAC would only let us watch 5 or 6 region 2 DVDs before we had to choose a region that the computer would be permanently set on. We had to choose region 1 since we were coming back to the states. But then we found a great video store that also rented region 1 DVDs. I don't know what region Malaysia is, but maybe you will find the same? Ask around once you get there.

Of course if you have a DVD player over there, none of this matters. :)

Enjoy the journey! We miss living overseas so much!

  5. Thank you all so much for sharing your stories. Both the hopeful ones and the ones that are still so full of pain. There is comfort in both. Thank you all for helping me feel not so alone in this.

Some of you ladies have been through so much and you are so strong and I take strength from you. (And you homeschool!:hurray:)

Several of you mentioned Reproductive Endocrinologists. Did you have to pursue an RE on your own, or were you referred to one? We do have insurance, but I don't know if it would cover that.

Jann in TX, I didn't even know "secondary infertility" was a term. I will check out that link. Thx.

I have read some online about progesterone levels and that this is somewhat controversial. Some OBs/REs think low progesterone is a symptom of a pregnancy that is going to fail and others think low prog. is a cause? I am glad to hear positive experiences with this.

MomLovesClassics, I can't even imagine going through what you have been through. Thank you for sharing your pain.

Blessings to you all. And thanks again.

  6. I guess I am just looking for some commiseration/encouragement. I have 2 DC: DD8, DS5. We have been trying for three years for #3. I miscarried in the 11th week about a year ago I just had my second miscarriage last week. (When I joined these boards I was preg. and excited so I put my name as Claire+3. But alas, I am only Claire+2):crying:

Now my OB wants to run tests to maybe figure out what the problem is. I feel so ambivalent about having the tests. Maybe we should just call it good. Be thankful for the two healthy children that we have. I don't know if I can go through the hope and the fear of another pregnancy. Yet in my heart I still long for another child.

    Anyone out there relate?

  7. Thank you all for your suggestions. Mandamom, that is very helpful. I am going to try just five at a time until they are memorized.

Also, she is definitely more of an auditory learner. I will have her say them out loud.

She is struggling specifically with addition and subtraction: 3's, 4's, 7's and 8's. She has her doubles and 9's down pretty well.

Thanks again for all of your help.

  8. Does anyone else's child STRUGGLE with memorizing math facts? What have you found to be helpful? Also I feel like this is a stupid question, but how does one drill flash cards effectively? In Horizons it says to drill the cards with the answers showing first. We did that first but DD8 just read the cards (slumped over with eyes rolled); they did not seem to be sinking in at all. I don't think she is a visual learner. Now we are on to drilling without the answers but it is so slow and painful. DD counts in her head or on her fingers and it takes FOREVER to get through the deck.

Just keep going? Is there a better way?

    Thanks,

    Claire

  9. Just wanted to echo Christine and add my own nightmare. I HSed DD8 for K-1 with Saxon math. Math was easy and a bit slow, but she learned it really well. This year for 2nd grade we put her in a private Classical school that uses Singapore. She has really struggled this year. We have shed many tears over math. There is zero drill on addition/subtraction/multiplication facts. No memorization. To me this seems antithetical to the classical method. Singapore is pushing her into logic stage abstraction way before she's ready. Yesterday I had her take both the Horizons and the Saxon placement tests and she failed both of the 2nd grade (ready to go into 3rd) tests. Supposedly Singapore is ahead of grade level. I am sick about it. My love to learn girl has turned into an anxiety ridden basket case that thinks she is not smart.

This is just our story. Singapore math is not for everyone. If Saxon is working for you, I certainly advise sticking with it.

I just bought the new WTM last night and am thinking of bringing her back home.

  10. Both my siblings, my Dad, my daughter and I have this. We see letters as colors, days of the week as colors, and also certain piano keys, ( the key of C is yellow, D is green etc.) We don't always agree on all of our colors, but many of them are the same. It's fun to compare.

There is an interesting article (a little technical) that I read a while back from the American Synesthetic Society which links seeing letters as colors with using colored refrigerator letter magnets to learn the alphabet.

    http://http://synesthesia.info/Witthoft.pdf

I did have a set of these as a child and many are the same. This doesn't explain the music or days of the week connection, though.

  11. My daughter attends Trinitas Classical Academy in Grand Rapids, MI and we use SOTW. I am actually a parent helper for history. :)

Our week looks like this: Monday: read chapter, ask review questions, ask one student to narrate.

Tuesday: review, color picture for timeline, mapwork

Wednesday: review, craft/ additional library book/ video of my choosing

    Thursday: review game, color sheet

    Friday: test

Also on Monday the students are given 1/2 sheet cards (on cardstock) with the major facts and dates from the chapter that they take home with them each night to study for homework.

We love history and we love SWB! :D

    Hope that helps.
