I have never posted here before, but have read as many of the previous threads about Teaching Textbooks as I could find. My son will be in 4th grade this coming year. He really wants to use Teaching Textbooks. I believe that the teaching style will really suit him and since I will be adding (officially) our 5 year old to my teaching day, along with my 9yo and 7yo, I agreed to let him use it. We worked really hard on math last year. We started with Time4Learning, but I soon saw that it would not be enough by itself and made my own worksheets all year pulling from various curriculum placement tests, an Abeka book that I owned, and various other sources. He scored well on the Iowa Basic Skills test that we were required to take, so I guess that all the work was worth it, but I am just worn out from making worksheets everyday. :-) I definitely have my reservations about going just with Teaching Textbooks with out supplementing. The word problems on the placement test were VERY simple. (I looked through about 7th grade) I own Math Mammoth 4th grade and can use it to supplement if necessary. FINALLY....my question....Does anyone know of anything specifically not covered by Teaching Textbooks that will be on the Iowa Basic Skills Test? My son is not thrilled about having to do any supplemental work, but I need to make sure that he can perform satisfactorily on the test for our state. I need to condense the supplementation down to a bare minimum at least for this year. We will be using 5th grade, maybe 6th and at the very least supplementing with Singapore CWP. Does anyone have any experience with this? I love the format of Teaching Textbooks, but somehow feel that I am compromising quite a bit when I compare it to Math Mammoth. At the same time, if my son will do math without complaining too much and it can take some of the weight off of me, I may be willing to make that compromise. :-) I would appreciate any advice. I am not trying to start another debate on the rigorousness of Teaching Textbooks, but could really use some advice from those that have used it, especially if you did standardized testing, or are aware of any topics that I might need to touch on a little more than Teaching Textbooks does.
