    Social Studies question

    Ok, so if you're not going to teach "social studies," then at what point do you teach the things like civics, communities and their structure, governmental structures, that sort of thing? Are you including that in your history lessons?

     

    One concern of mine is that since this fall will be my first time hs'ing, if the decision is made to put her back in public school for third grade and all she didin 2nd is SOTW Ancient History (which is something I'm also considering), then will it put her behind her classmates that did learn the "traditional social studies" that is taught in public school 2nd grade?

    I'm not Cadam, but IMO Social Studies is an artificial construct. It's *supposed* to be a catch-all term (like "Language Arts") to cover history, civics, government, geography and ethics. So rather than teaching history and geography and civics and government (I don't think ethics should be lumped with them), they teach a hybrid that really doesn't teach anything at all.

    I don't teach to ps standards or believe in teaching social studies so I think you should just follow WTM and not worry about these kinds of things.

     

    I'm just curious - why do you not believe in teaching social studies? Your comment has intrigued me.

    LLATL question

    I've been looking for the red and yellow student books used. I have copies of the TE that I have either bought or borrowed, but I'm seeing some older editions for sale that are combined.

     

    Are the older editions that much different from the newer ones where the TE and SB are separate or are they still teaching the same information, just in a different format?

    I picked up a book from a used store yesterday and it's basically a list of what they call "trade books" that can be used to teach to the ten thematic standards of Social Studies. I found this to be very interesting because the lists are very large and have varying ways to categorize the books (primary topic, secondary, age group).

    My questions are, how would you go about teaching and testing something like this? Is there a curriculum that I can pull from to go along with this? Or should I just hang onto it as a reference and keep looking for a curriculum for 2nd grade?

    Science.... Am I the only one

    So far, we've done (K-2) oceans, habitats, insects, plants, solar system, magnets, electricity, simple machines, geology, weather, etc. Science biographies are included whenever possible. I really like that dc know at least a little about a wide range of topics. I often want to keep going with a topic, but dc are usually ready to move on!

     

     

    So what do you follow? Do you have a text book or are you following a curriculum? I'm trying to cover the same topics for my 2nd grader and found a couple of textbooks for level 2 at a used book store. No TE, though, so I'm not sure what I'll do with them other than use them for reference.

    Real Science for Kids?

    OK, So I'm really liking what I see with the RS4K but I'm wondering about grade levels. Those of you who are using this curriculum, what grade/age would you call the Pre-Level, Level 1 and Level 2. It seems like the level 1 biology covers the same thing as the pre-level, just a little more in-depth and technical so with a 7yo/2nd grader, would you just jump right into the level 1 or still start with the pre-level?

    Question for year round homeschoolers

    I'm thinking of adapting to a year-round schedule when I start teaching my 2nd grader next year and I was wondering what kind of schedule you use? Do you make your own or do you follow a public school's year round schedule?

     

    Another consideration is that she'll be in an enrichment program that won't start until the fall (two days a week). Would I totally mess her up if she started her school weeks before the enrichment?

    Thanks for all the input! As for why I'm home schooling for next year, I don't feel like she's being challenged at her school. A lot of the stuff she's doing now seems to be so simple and basic for her. I want to challenge her a bit without taking the fun out of learning. She picks up math very quickly, she's an avid reader, has good handwriting for a six year old and her spelling is almost always correct. Those tricky words that are the exceptions to rules are usually what stump her because they haven't been taught to her. However, since this is my first year home schooling, I'd really like a curriculum that spells it all out for me, which is why I was looking at LLATL.

     

    She loves art and doing things hands on, so I want to include an art program (I really like what I read about Artistic Pursuits).

     

    Any additional input anyone else may have on any of these (WP- children around the world, LLATL-red, science, health), I would greatly appreciate. Thanks so much!

    I just finished reading several pages over at homeschoolreviews and many complained that the all-in-one concept of LLATL was great, but lacking in details. Several had to supplement spelling and grammar. Does anyone else here feel that way?

     

    Now that I know this may not be the answer for teaching Language Arts, what would you recommend for a 2nd grader reading on a 3rd and 4th grade level?

    Hi everyone,

     

    I'm trying to put together what I'll be using for my DD 2nd grader for the fall and I'm looking for some advice. I'm wanting to do the red book LLATL and was wondering do I need to add a different spelling program or is theirs pretty comprehensive?

     

    Also, I've been seduced by the WP's Children around the world theme pack. Does anyone have any feedback on that particular program? I know it's expensive, but on paper it seems worth it and has a lot of information.

     

    What would you recommend for science and health?
