How could you do this for a 9th grader? It's easier for the younger ones. DS wants to study wolves and dinos. He loves to be read to and is receptive to OPGTR. We use wooden blocks, fridge phonics, etc. DD is 12 and loves history. We lapbook, notebook, and scrapbook. DD 15 is harder. She is in 9th and I'm not sure how to make hers more enjoyable. In high school there are just certain things that have to be done. What could I do to tailer it more for her?

My dd is competing for a scholarship in which the winner is award by number of votes (popularity contest?). Anyhow, as a homeschool student she does know tons of people so we are trying to get the word out to as many people as possible in our extended network. Please consider voting for her:
http://www.zinch.com/Voting/Regionals.aspx?GroupId=68#Rhianna-Pedigo
Unfortunately, I do not know how to do an embedded link so there is no way for me to put a link without her name and even if I do, you have to vote by name on the site anyhow. :glare:
ETA: After you click on the link, you will receive an email which you have to confirm before you can vote. She is currently in 3rd place.
Voted. Tell her good luck!:001_smile:

She is very bright. Wants to be a vet, just not very motivated. I think sometime that it is hormonal. Are there any pills out there for moms with a teen girl and a tween girl? :) The 4yo boy is soooo much easier. LOL

My DH was not at all keen about the idea of hsing. :glare: I did it anyway. :sneaky2:
He is much better about it now, but not very involved. How do you get him more involved? I try to tell him about our day, show him their work, shame him about acting like he doesn't care. :glare: He changed jobs and works out of state all week. We would have had to take them out anyway. I love telling him I told you so... He' s a great Dad. I just would like more input from him on how things are progressing. He told me it would be my fault if we raised a bunch of dummies :001_tt2:. He said he was joking, the stinker.

Please don't laugh. How do you get a high school student ready to graduate using a more lax method? How do you keep up with credits and everything else? I am very willing to try anything. I am tired of fighting the DC to get busy. What should I do?:glare: All of the DC are very bright and ahead of peers in PS. I don't want to lose momentum, but I am so sick of stressing over it. Stormy is 15.5. I feel like I am making her last years at home miserable. What to do?:banghead:

Someone told me about this group. I am looking for help on balancing a classical education with unschooling. I tried a strict classical regimen. It just does not work for me. First of all I am not a schedule type of person. (No matter how I try):glare: I have only met one family that did unschooling. This was several years ago, and to be honest, they were really mean about it. The way it was described to me online was a child led education that focuses on the joy of learning. People ,I need some joy!;) My kids are very bright. I think they need to be challenged. How do you do that and make it fun? I need someone to explain how to balance. I just can't be totally hands off. I need to make sure I feel confident that they are doing enough. I feel like pulling my hair out! Advice? Anyone?Pleeeaaassseee !!!!:svengo:

Any more? I love this question. What a big help when getting ready for the next year.

Saxon Math was not a good fit for my 12yo. My 15 yro had no problem with it. I am ordering MUS for all three next year.

Lapbooking is a wonderful way to get a child interested. Now that she is older we are using black cardstock instead of the shutter fold. For history we are studying the ancients. HOAC is great. They have Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient India, Mummies....the list goes on. It reinforces what we study. I use the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, and then find lapbooks to bring out certain things. We do the mini books, decorate any way she wants, glue it on the cardstock, and stick it in the folder. I use to think I had to do the whole lapbook, but now I give myself permission to use pieces of it.:001_smile: http://dynamic2moms.webs.com/ This is another place for free mini books. The graphics are wonderful and it is free. These two mothers worked their butts off. They are so nice to share. I have also "scrapbooked" our work. My 12 yro and my 15 yro have done beautiful lapbooks. The oldest did a TX lapbook as her first. She covered the folder in old TX maps, tweaked or changed the mini books to suit herself, and made sure to use tons of colored paper. She wrote a report and added a clear sheet cover to her lapbook to hold her report. I was amazed! Just remember to let them make their mark. It doesn't have to be perfect. Let them have fun while filling their minds with new info. The 12 yo loves to personalize hers. I don't care if it wears feathers if she is retaining the info.:)

Friggin freaking effing made up words to take the place of words that people don't want to hear. Either say the word or don't. Don't make up one to hide your lack of vocabulary.
:smilielol5::rofl::lol:

I have always felt if a child asks a question, they deserve and answer. Just make sure your answer is age appropriate. I think the book was called A Girls Life. Both my girls read this when we started talking about "girl stuff".

I wish I had your self control. Antiques make me happy. Books make me happier. Who needs clothes and dishes? Just don't touch my books!

And P.S. - I don't think the eating of the hair is all that weird.
We get plenty of it from rats and strangers when we eat processed food.
That's just GROSS! I may never eat again.

:lurk5: I want to hear more. I am not nearly as structured as I should be. We get it done, but it could be done more efficiently. Tell me more :)

Yes, yes, I know, it's not a Christian reponse, but it's my first reaction. Sorry. I wouldn't have had a problem with my kid hauling off and punching the little bastard back right on the kisser.
Amen sister!:iagree:
I was that mom that was at the school all the time. Very involved. I ran errands, ran copies, helped with every party. The teachers loved the help, but that was as far as your involvement should go. They did not want me to question how to turn a low A into a higher A next six weeks. My DC were doing well, why be dramatic about perfection? I just wanted to know what we needed to work on. One of my DD was laid back and picked on all the time. When I would question what was going on they would say she was just too sensitive. (Elem. here) I would ask what had happened and no one could tell me. DD would say the teacher was down the hall, or on her cell phone. The other DD doesn't take crap from anyone. She is easy going untill you got into her personal space. I have always told my DC that other people do not have the right to lay their hands on you. I have been called to the school for DD#2 taking up for herself. The only way I found that worked with the admin. was to call in Hubby. Hubby had known the Asst. Principal since school. He told the principal what he thought about the situation. He told him he needed to watch things more closely. The last thing he said was that he had a job, and better not have to take another morning off work to come back to this school. Wish I had thought to call him in earlier. Kids should feel safe in school because they should be watched after at all times. That is not the case. There are some wonderfull teachers there. Sadly there are teachers who could care less.

well excluding math! LOL
For example my plans are to use AWOA with Truthguest guides, getting all other books from our library.
So that is history,
Math I already have Saxon
Science: apologia
LLATL
and whatever I have planned to go with it,
So my goal is to keep it under $300 for the entire year, which isn't free, but very inexpensive.
Luckily we have a wonderful library system. We are just so DONE with textook history
Sounds good. You're lucky to have a good library. I think that is one reason I spend to much money. Our library is sooooo small. There isn't a lot to choose from. I just found this. I haven't looked at it very close yet. Maybe you can find something usefull. http://www.archive.org/details/americana

I feel your pain. I am interested in what everyone has to say. I just try to keep the peace. :lurk5:

IMO, it is possible to hs spending very little money, but you will pay for it with your time. So, in that sense, it is not free.:)
This seems to hold true for alot of things in life. Either money or time.
:iagree: I would be terrified to try to teach the basics without help. (I'm afraid of math):svengo:

I rely mostly upon the recommendations found in Susan Wise Bauer's book, The Well Trained Mind. Thus, I have used Story of the World for history.
HTH,
Sandy
:iagree: If I have more questions I post on here. I have been relying on this forum since I started hsing. I haven't been steered wrong yet :001_smile:

I need some ideas for science for a kid who lives and breathes it and would rather spend his time on science investigations and experiments than on elaborate history programs.
Thanks!
Someone on one of my yahoo groups recommended Super Charged Science. The kids and I went online to look at it. http://www.superchargedscience.com/ They loved it! My 12 yro DD asked ME if we could do it. The baby is 4, and he was diggin' the vids. Go and give it a look. Auroura Lipper does it. She once worked for NASA, and was a science prof. I liked that I do not have to buy books to go along. You can pay $1 for 30 days worth of work I think. I am going to do this for next year.
I hope this helps :001_smile:

We are using OPG. My son is only 4, so we are moving slowly. I did buy everything to go with it. We do use the magnets some, but mostly I use wooden alphabet blocks. We also use fridge phonics (Leap Frog). DS had a great time learning the rhymes for the vowels. I recommend it. Like I said, we are not that far into it yet, but I like it so far.:)

Grammar has been a great tiebreaker and a wonderful tool to help coach DD with her writing, and she is being taught more of it earlier than I was, but I'll bet your DD will catch up in about 2 months if you really get on it.
Thank you for that. It makes me feel much better about the situation.:001_smile:

Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to dig into this.
Looking for direction

I am very glad I was pointed to this group. The yahoo group I just joined doesn't seem to use curriculum. Not judging...just not confident to hs without some plan in place. They are all very nice and have some great ideas. I don't know much about unschooling, but I like what I have heard. I would just like to be a little more loose and fun in school. I don't want to be so rigid that it becomes a chore.
