  1. 3 Rivers, I have a Start Write C.D. that was given to me by a friend. I will gladly pass it on for postage. It doesn't have the instruction manual, though, and I could never figure it out exactly, but maybe someone else on here could help you with that.

  2. Some public school children haven't been trained in the art of concentrating while reading and many tend to sort of "fly away" or doze off, and sort of have to keep coming back to the story mentally. Some children don't do well reading silently. I for one, still find myself mouthing words in order to hear them, I tend to do better with a mix of reading and hearing myself read outloud, a mix of visual and auditory. I don't do it all the time, but I tend to find that when I really need to concentrate, this helps me to better absorb the materials.

I think the advice to get the Rod and Staff 4 is great, and I would also add Spelling Plus Dictation, to bring her up to level in spelling in an easier non-threatening way (you know, not another workbook). You could easily go through the lists to sort of gauge where she is at and start 4-8 dictation sentences daily from there. This will teach her to be alert to her own errors and also help tremendously with punctuation. It's also a very easy way to introduce dictation.

  3. My fourth grader turned 10 in October. We started our fourth grade year in August when he was almost 10, but not quite. :) He is definitely a fourth grader, not a fifth grader. I didn't start him in kindergarten until he was almost 6. He was just not ready. Most boys aren't ready until about that age.

  4. Most definitely get fully dressed and clean rooms before we start school. It's training for the rest of their lives, but this is the reason uniforms work at certain jobs and not your regular clothes. You just get into a mind set to work when you have on clothes as opposed to p.j's when you just feel like you are lounging around. :)

  5. You won't find too many positive Ace experiences here on this board...if you want some more information about Ace, you can go to the ace yahoo group that is pretty active to get more info. there.

I personally love the Ace curriuclum, but don't use it for every subject. I also use it my way with extras, experiments, and so on. In a school setting it can be very stifling to sit at those little desks for hours on end. (My daughters did attend an Ace school for a year) In a home environment it is very different and can be a positive experience.

    The yahoo group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ACEhomeschoolingsupport/

There's also an excellent article for support here:

  6. Can someone please tell me about Bravewriter? How does this work? What type of writing does this teach? I'm a little bit confused about how this is set up and how it all works?

Thank you for any help that you can give me. I would be considering this for a 5th grader, among many of my other considerations.:tongue_smilie:

  7. Uh, as she wrote it! This is AMAZING! 10 years old! Wow! I wouldn't do a single thing except work on honing those skills and sharpening them, but it looks like she's doing wonderfully already.

ps if you wanted to add dictation, you could just use something prepared already, or dictate chosen sentences from books she already reads. Wow, I'm just so impressed.

  8. Oh I see. This is what I do, I have them each separated by time tables and then I have them clipped, so pulling out the 6 time tables and the 7 division would be easy. I would just pull out the 6 time tables cards and the 7 time tables cards and then turn the 7's around for the division facts in the back.

Honestly, it gets kind of uncomfortable for me because I think the cards are rather light and my son can see the division answer on the back, not to mention that the division fact is on the bottom of the time table card, so it's sort of easy to cheat for the child.

I end up having to use my fingers to cover the small division fact on the bottom and then my other fingers to cover the middle of the card to keep my son from being able to also see the big imprint answer of the division fact on the back.

I'm really considering purchasing separate cards for time tables and division, but since these were given to me for free, I've made do gratefully.

  9. I asked this question years ago and was told by several posters that they supplemented just as they would supplement any other subject. But for me, I had never even considered supplementing one math program with another, and yet here I am this year, using several programs to try and round out my son's math learning.

He has some holes and gaps and is extremely forgetful when it comes to math. One program is mastery,Moving With Math (similar to Math U See) and the other is spiral, CLE, which we are using very behind grade level, but it meets the need of spiraling and not letting him forget previously learned materials.

In a perfect world, I would love to eventually only be doing one math program, but until we find some kind of balance and my son catches up, this is as good as it gets. Oh, I forgot that I also add in the occasional worksheet from Mastering Mathematics. Sheesh...

  10. I'm going to recommend School of Tomorrow's Word Building Paces. He can work independently and there is a lot of practice with the words. It isn't just spelling, it's word building. This will include dictionary work, prefixes, suffixes, sentences, and so on and it's all self contained in each individual pace.

You can test him in here: http://aceministries.com/assessments/

scroll down, log yourself in, and start the Word Building portion of the test.

And (((hugs))) to you! I have been there. I have a son who went through three levels of Sequential Spelling and 8 levels of Megawords and still misspells "beginning" and many other words incorrectly. Just keep trying. I tell my son that if anyone ever dares to come up to me and blame me for my son's poor spelling, I'm going to throw all of his completed workbooks at them! :tongue_smilie::tongue_smilie::tongue_smilie:

  11. I think I know what you are talking about. It's a little white book with experiments on the days of Genesis. I can't remember the name, was it Genesis day by day?

No, I got it, it's Science in the Creation Week! I looked in my very old Elijah Company catalog. Let me know if this was it. :)

  12. You know, I have to agree with your husband. I noticed that when I give rules to my son, he gets focused on the rules and forgets the words. When I just tell him to memorize how the word looks, to take a picture of it in his brain, he remembers the word. I also notice that spelling the word orally helps with retention as well. I still use rules, but only on the words he's really having trouble remembering, or when they apply as in word endings. For now, this seems to be working and we use Spelling Plus Dictation. I know many will probably disagree, but this happens to be the case with us.

  13. Okay, big confession here. Most of my children didn't get the shoe tying thing until the ages between 10-11. I never sweated it much, and now they all know.

My mother tells me that I learned to tie my shoes at 4. While that was pretty impressive back then in the 70's, it hasn't helped me much in life today. ;)

Don't worry, he'll get it eventually. Boys especially struggle more with these types of issues (motor coordination). I honestly believe that the person that invented velcro sneakers was a boy!
