  1. Hi, All. I'm not here that much (too busy; so forgive me if I don't reply to your responses to my response) and I happen to see this thread. This is a subject dear to my heart because I have seen so much of it around me. I have seen so many people become outraged by lenient laws yet they turn away from victims of domestic violence who ask for help. All I have to say is regardless of the laws and demographics in any state or country, please, please try to help someone in such a situation. The strictest laws are useless unless someone calls the police, helps the victim find a safe place, calls a "safe" relative for that person, loans/gives money to help the person get out, whatever fits the situation, etc. I've had to call the parents (which was very awkward for me) of someone in that situation because no one else would dare to do so.

  2. Dh mentioned bringing them into our home but even he knows that was wishful thinking and not something we can do.  With my chronic illness issues I am not doing such a good job taking care of my own home.  I physically could not handle having them here.

I go back and forth on feeling like FIL is selfish.  Some more churned up feelings!

Their recent move - MIL still gets confused sometimes and thinks that a "helicopter moved our house to somewhere else".  FIL calls me when she gets like this to tell me that "Mama is out of her head".  Nothing I can do about it!

The move is only sort of initiated by FIL.  He will get concerned, will make a decision, forget the decision, make another decision that is spontaneous and not thought out. . .

My biggest concern is if you think they need to move, how will you get them to move if FIL is not following through? lt's very hard to make someone move.

  3. So sorry to hear this.

From someone who has BTDT, take care of yourself first. Otherwise, you will burn out and can't take of anyone, including yourself. Secondly, hiring a person at the house by themselves is a crapshoot. These kinds of people have plenty of burnout and stress also, never mind the other side issues that could come up. Having them somewhere with a larger staff than 1 is much better in the long run. It is also easier if your FIL gets to choose their living arrangements.

Whatever you decide, do not use your own money to pay for anything. All of the ILs' money should be used first, even if you have to sell the house. It keeps the resentment down among family members.

For the food issue, I would suggest that, if it is allowed, have family members bring homecooked meals as often as possible. Let me tell you it is much less stressful to bring food than to go to a person's house and trying to get them to bathe or take meds. Let the staff deal with it. You will still have issues like this even with a paid aide and you will still have to go over and try to fix it. (speaking from experience) An aide can't make a person do things he/she doesn't want to do either.

ETA: Having just 1 person being the paid CNA every day is too much. Even the people you hired get stressed and need days off.

  4. You need to pick an orthopedic doctor based on his/her specialty. Not all orthopedics do everything well. Some are better with knees than hips. Some are better with hands and elbows. A relative picked a doctor who specialized in robotic partial knee replacements since he knew he qualified for it, but his regular orthopedic dr. wanted him to have a full replacement because that's all this dr. did. So a dr. who only does full replacements is not going to recommend a partial replacement. This same dr. is not known for understanding hip problems well, so I wouldn't go to that dr. for hip problems. These are things you hear from other patients. If the problem is a recurrent sports problem, see a sports specialist.

If you are not sure, call the drs. on your list and ask questions. Don't hesitate to get 3 or 4 opinions.

  5. I'm still working on my Halloween needlepoint. I hope to have it done by Halloween. I signed up for this workshop as a ghost student in May with one of the needlepoint guilds that I belong to:

    http://www.sdang.org/workshops/Cupcake%20Mouse%20Registration.pdf

(If anyone here wants to do this project, you can join the guild and then sign up for the workshop. If you want to inquire about the level, you may email the workshop director.)

I signed my daughter up for several sewing classes. She loves sewing. We have made skirts and pillows at home. We're working on doll clothes together right now.

  6. I would not buy another KF. We have 4 first generations and the port is gone on three of them. Amazon knows about this problem. The problem with charging is with the port, not the charger. We have three devices that don't charge anymore. The ports on this model are of subpar quality. Amazon may replace your KF with a refurbished one. Someone I know got it replaced after warranty but the port problem came back.

We've had intermittent problems with apps also. We have one second-generation Fire and it is much better. However, I like the iPad much better and my kids are getting iPad minis to replace their KF.

  7. I would just enroll them in a knitting class. I knit a lot and I taught some basics to my 8-year old daughter, but I took her to a local yarn shop for lessons and she took off very quickly. It is much easier to have someone teach you in person and help you manipulate the yarn.

I just enrolled her in sewing classes even though I sew and she has learned so much already.

  8. My Orthodox Jewish friends used to write Hebrew letters at the top of their work in school and this was public school. It was a phrase related to "with the help of God," I think. I don't quite remember. (It's been many years.)

  9. Play It Again has lots of figure skates around here. Check hockey shops also for used figure skates. Many of them are barely used. Just be sure that the ankle part of the boot is stiff and doesn't give when you squeeze it.

This is a boot that many adult recreational skaters use around here. The grey is used by ladies a lot. I would only buy online if your dd's foot is a standard size.

Craiglist has plenty of sellers. Pictures are usually posted so you could see the age of the skate.

  10. Skating mom here. I wouldn't buy online. Do you live in an area that has lots of skating? If you do, check craigslist or even post on Freecycle. I have sold skates through craigslist.

Do you have a sports consignment/used store anywhere near you? A sports chain such as Dick's or Sports Authority? Do you have any local department stores/discount stores? We have a couple local chains that carry decent skates for the recreational skater.

She will have lots of fun.

  11. You need to have copies of a sheet that say: "Duties that satisfy the volunteer requirement" and, if possible, list them with dates and specific amount of time needed. Our figure skating club requires 4 service hours. When a competition comes up, a spreadsheet is sent around by email and people sign up for times. We are reminded we need to fulfill our 4 hours.

Do you have a set number of hours to volunteer? What are the consequences if they don't volunteer? What happens when they don't show up for their task? Maybe you need to address this for the next agreement.

It takes good organization to list everything that needs to be done. Having specific tasks and amount of times will help people choose. Plenty of notice is good too. For example, you know there is a big event on a Sat. in March. It would be helpful to let people know and write up what kind of volunteers you need and the times.

When I join an organization that says you have to volunteer, I assume that they will have a list for me to check out what I can do to fit my schedule. If I don't hear anything or am not given a sheet of assignments, I just assume that I am not needed. I would not assume people are slackers if you haven't given them anything to do. Most people are waiting to be asked/told.

  12. What does the guarantee say? It doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe it's defective.

I would call the manufacturer of the company and talk with them. Sometimes they will replace the part or item if it fails, even after 4 years. My husband called the maker of a ceiling fan we had for 4 years and they sent him the part to fix it for free. So it doesn't hurt to ask.

Our humidifier is 15 years old and has worked well. I would expect a humidifier to last more than 4 years, although the repairman who looked at our dishwasher said the expected life of most new appliances is 5 years.

  13. The main library branch is across the street from FI, and there is a Whole Foods a few blocks away in one direction, and a Trader Joe's a few blocks away in the other direction.  There's a nice little used book store by the library too.  And it's not terribly far from 30th Street station, where you can catch regional rail and Amtrak trains as well as the El.

Thanks for the tips, esp. grocery stores. I hadn't been thinking that far ahead.

Is there anything else we shouldn't miss while in the area? We're going to go the zoo.

  14. Looked into sublets, but most are found on Craigslist, which I will not use for housing. I will not rent someone's apartment with their personal possessions. Saw enough of those on airbnb.com.

I am looking for a one-bedroom for the kids and I can use the living room while they are sleeping as I still have to work while being there. I think I found one, but we'll see.

  15. You might also want to ask local Philly homeschoolers.

This Yahoo group (CPHG) has a bunch of center city folks,

and this Yahoo group is for nearby Delaware County but has lots of folks from the broader area.

They are both friendly groups, and there are some serious dance families on both groups.

Thanks. I will check this out.

A potential furnished apt. next to the Franklin Institute came up. Just trying to figure out what else to ask the owner. It's about 2 miles from the school and it seems really nice. And it's within the budget.

  16. From near Jefferson to the second-to-last NJ stop (Ashland), about 25 minutes.  $6 round trip on a re-fillable swipe card.

    Schedule info HERE.

If you're looking around Rittenhouse Square, just know that is the most desirable luxury neighborhoods in Philly and you'll pay accordingly.  Hospital area is prob cheaper.

Thanks for the info. I'll have my husband check it out.

I found the hospital area and RS to be about the same in terms of short-term housing. Either will be fine. The hardest part is finding those apartments.

  17. Rittenhouse Square is desirable, but I haven't found it to be that expensive. I remember when we were shopping for a weekend condo there, I was absolutely shocked at how low the prices were, compared with when we were buying a similar place in Manhattan. Rentals are a lot cheaper, too, so I think LMA might be able to find something if she shops around a little. Since it's just her and her dd, they might even be able to get away with a large studio apartment. It wouldn't be ideal, but it could be workable, and it should be quite a bit cheaper than a larger place with separate bedrooms.

I don't know anything about reasonably priced hotels in the area, but it sounds like you have given her some great suggestions.

I found several nice apts. in the area that are in our price range, but all of them fell through, for reasons on the landlords' sides. So I know I can find a place. I just need to make the right connection. So the more information I get, the better chance I have of finding a place that will work.
