  1. I think people should have the right to decide where they want to spend their last days.

    :iagree:

My grandma did and I am so grateful! She had breast cancer that had spread into her lungs. She was most comfortable at home. We, her family, were with her to take care of her. We were able to make many wonderful memories in those days that I don't believe would've occurred in a hospital setting...just not possible. She had some healthcare people that came in daily to tend to her as well. The care she received was far more than what she would have ever been able to receive in a hospital. She died with so many of her family surrounding her.

  2. I'd love to have chickens but we can't because we're in the city. :(

My grandma had them because her land was Grandfathered. Her place was always so wonderful for us kids...a little piece of country right here in the city. She had a huge garden and yard. One of her neighbors who was also Grandfathered still had a couple of Shetland Ponies that we could go visit. Loved it...loved feeding the chickens too. Such wonderful memories! I miss my grandma.:angelsad2:

  3. We were going to wait until they were 12 but that was changed when my oldest, who was 3yo at the time, chopped off every bit of her beautiful blond ringlets. Afterwards she cried so much saying she looked like a boy, I hoped getting her ears pierced would help her feel more girly.

*Just for a little background...we had just lost my FIL who was my daughters whole world at that time. I found out later when she was older that the reason she cut her hair was to be like her Papaw, who was fairly thinning and had a bit of a bald spot (lol). She had a Mufasa stuffed animal that he had bought her so she gave him a haircut too in memory of Papaw. ;)

My other two daughters got their ears pierced once we felt they were capable of taking care of them. I think they were both about 10 or 11.

  4. I like the Mariner's Museum. It's been awhile since I visited so I'm not sure if any of the exhibits have changed, but it's a nice area. The is also Noland Trail on the property if you're into a walk in the woods. :001_smile:

Right next door is the Peninsula Fine Arts Center that you can visit as well.

About 5 mins. away is the VA Living Museum.

When my kids where younger, we had passes to both Mariner's Museum and VA Living Museum. We enjoyed them both.:001_smile:

  5. How funny that you posted this question this morning. I just threw some socks on because I had a friend coming to drop off her child for a playdate and my toenails are half painted. Not half painted like I was in the middle of painting them, but a little bit on each toenail because I haven't painted them well since the cold weather came.

My toes are half painted too for the same reason.:tongue_smilie: I have red on.

  6. Starting January 2009, I started have pain in my right elbow. It started off with a lot of popping and cracking and then it would ache terribly and feel stiff.

Along that time, I broke out in a rash starting on the top of my head and behind my ears...very itchy, kind of like hives, but not actually hives. I then broke out on my chest and left ankle. It was not an allergic reaction or dandruff. I was also under a lot of stress at the time. Doctor put me on a steroid medication for the rash. It went away for a few months.

Then in March, after a walk, my left knee swelled up. It wasn't too painful, just very uncomfortable. I couldn't get the swelling to go away. After about a week, I went to the doctor. She had no clue what was going on. After another week of trying home remedy, she sent me to an orthopedic doc. He put me on prescription strength anti-inflammatory meds which did reduce swelling. Only had an xray done...went to PT...nothing seemed to make much difference. O.Doc finally did an MRI and the result was that I had cartilage that was deteriorating behind the kneecap. So he said there wasn't much to do at this time for it.

In Nov. I had an operation on my right elbow to move the nerve which by this point had become very painful all down my arm. While I don't have much nerve pain anymore, I still have very bad pain and stiffness in the joint. Never had an MRI on it.

I have since developed joint pain in both knees and both elbows. I get very fatigued some times. It seems to come and go. It's usually worse during times of stress. I just feel like my body is literally breaking down on my.

I have hypothyroidism but that is under control. I have had several labs done since this all began. I go back to my endocrinologist on my Monday.

I have also starting having of heart palpitations...a lot.

I don't know what to do. I really do not like my family doc. Very nice women but she doesn't seem to have a clue. One time while in her office, I was trying to make her understand the severity (at that time) of what I was feeling. I started to cry a little...she ask me if I was sure it wasn't depression causing all of this. I was a bit unhappy with that remark! I told her that yes...maybe I was a little depressed at that point because I felt as though my body was falling apart and no one seemed to be able to help me. I requested that she do labs to see if anything showed up...specifically to do an ANA test to see if I had an autoimmune disease...R.A or Lupus or something. When the results came back, she said that the results on the ANA were positive (1:80) but that they weren't high enough that an arthritis doctor would consider a disease (like R.A.).

I have searched all over the web trying to find something that fits what I feel. I just don't know. I tend to down-play a lot of what I feel which makes it hard to get a decent dx.

What is wrong with me?!?!?! Any ideas of a good place to start? I do intend to find a new family doctor. I'm dreading it. I hate the process of finding a new doc.

I am hoping that someone here maybe has some idea of what could be going on with me. I don't seem to fit a textbook definition of anything.

  7. I was a little surprised that people have gotten upset about the show, thinking it made "all homeschoolers look weird."

I thought they made it very clear that these families were "not homeschooling, but unschooling" (in their own words) and that a small percentage of homeschoolers have this belief and approach.

    :iagree:

I felt that distinction as well. I was more irritated at the family for putting themselves out there like that. They presented themselves as VERY extreme. Of course you're going to have some fallout on that from regular folks. Just the whole "no rules" thing and letting the kids decide if they want to brush their teeth or not... to most people that's crazy... let alone the fact that you are letting them do whatever they want to for education.

I would love to hear the family speak out against GMA if they were misrepresented. I'm sure they could found a way to get their message out there. Doesn't Fox hate the mainstream media? Perhaps they'd be happy to show these homeschoolers true story...and point out GMA's faults. :D

Or at least, maybe GMA can check back with them in a few years to see what has become of them. As stated earlier, the proof is in the pudding. I am actually curious to whether or not someone can succeed through extreme unschooling.

ETA: The parents were back on GMA this morning. I think they did a bit better today.

  8. This isn't shoddy jounalism. These families described radical unschooling for themselves. The journalist also did note that this is an unorthodox method of homeschooling. They were not portraying all homeschoolers as radical unschoolers. I have seen many media portrayals of other kinds of homeschoolers: spelling bee winner, school at homers, middle of the roaders, etc. Unfortunately, radical unschoolers often seek the spotlight for their 'cause,' so you will see them in the media.
