  1. I’ve read on Facebook about Circe refusing to update links in the latest printing of a Cindy Rollins’ book.

Explain Circe to me in general. They only publish a single writing program (that we used one year and I thought was the worst homeschooling purchase I’ve ever made). They host very expensive zoom calls for people wanting to classically homeschool. They host very expensive apprenticeships. What is their claim to fame that makes people want to pay them for training? I just don’t get it?

  2. There is a homeschool graduation ceremony that we are planning to attend and you can wear whatever color cap and gown you want. We are kind of stuck on what color to get. We belong to a co-op that has used black and orange for colors. So, we thought about getting a black gown with orange tassel. We've alos thought about going a bit wilder with an orange cap and gown. My daughter also likes light blue. I figure that's about as good a reason as any to pick a color. Ravenclaw colors? I feel like blue and silver might be nicer for photographs than orange or light blue. The college she's planning to attend has purple as one of their colors as does the community college she currently attends. And she likes purple. I don't know! Help me make the important educational decisions here, people!

  3. We started with the Old Testament and had made it all the way to Ephesians. I then realized that the pdf download I had has huge white blocks covering the majority of the books post Ephesians. I went to the link in my email to attempt to download it again. I guess they did away with their old website so the link no longer works. I contacted twice. Second time I got a response asking if it was the new or old version and worst case scenario they'd send me a new link. I asked them to please send me a new link. They never sent it.

It's just incredibly frustrating that we've worked on this for so long and I guess it will never be finished. And it wasn't particularly cheap for a pdf download either.

  4. I’ve been listening to “This Week in Virology” since the pandemic began. They think there is evidence that this needs to be a three shot series. They don’t see good evidence for the bivalent booster.

ETA: Just noting you list she will be taking Algebra 1, but will have 4 math credits -- do you mean Algebra 2??

Because if she is just now doing Algebra 1 as a 12th grader, that may be very problematic for being accepted into a university -- most require at least getting through Algebra 2, if not a math higher than Algebra 2, as part of the required credits for admission...

So, it looks like this is her total credit list:
    4 credits = English
    4 credits = Math (Algebra 1 ??)
5 credits = Science (Biology, Astronomy, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology)
9 credits = Social Studies -- 6 of those could count as great "Academic Electives"
(Psychology, Government, Archeology, Geology, Texas History, American History, Modern World History, World History, Geography)
2 credits = For. Lang.: Spanish
1 credit = Fine Arts: Art Appreciation
    1 (?) credit = Elective: Speech
    26 credits = total

Assuming a typo and she will have Math up through Algebra 2 at LEAST for college entrance, that looks good.

Sorry… should say college algebra. She’ll have algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and college algebra.

She also has two years of Bible. I’m trying to think if I’m forgetting anything else.

  6. We are finalizing classes for 12th grade.

My daughter has taken the following dual credit classes: Spanish 1 and 2, psychology, government, and archeology.

She has taken the following sciences at home: biology, astronomy, chemistry.

Next year she wants to take the following:

English and World History at co-op

Algebra, Geology, Environmental Science, Texas History dual credit at our local community college.

She will have 4 years of English, speech, art appreciation, 4 math, American history, geography, modern world history, world history.

Do we need a normal physics and economics class in there somewhere? She wants to major in English.

    Whoa nellie.

Mystery Science is far and away my favorite elementary school science program and if you can find a way -- as mentioned upthread -- to download the videos ahead of time, I would use that.  The activities are very well-designed and don't require much prep at all.

How many lessons are in mystery science? Is it something we could only use for one year? Or are there multiple years of lessons?

  8. We've used Jay Wile. I don't love how it introduces essentially something wrong because that is what scientists used to think... One example I remember is students making a solar system with earth in the middle. I feel like with little guys, they walk out thinking that's fact.

We are currently using Elemental. I do not like the encyclopedias that the reading is pulled from. The 5th - 8th references are so dry and complicated. It's our second year using it. It's not the worst. Maybe we just continue. I'm just not loving it. I keep thinking there must be better.

I've looked at apologia again and again. I used flying creatures with my own kids years ago. Most books don't contain 28 weeks worth of experiments. Maybe I need to supplement with other experiments?

Video based is hard because the church internet tends to suck. Heavy evolutionary references will be a no go. I like the kids to get a lot of hands on at co-op. I have 40 minutes of time to fill. If you can find me the magic science program, well, I can be your best well trained mind forum friend forever and ever.

So now the Russians and Chinese have even more incentive to pressure children into pushing themselves beyond all healthy physical boundaries, since they can drug children has much as they want with no consequences. This decision is absolutely sickening.

Yep. All I see is a green light to dope the kids. 🙄

How old was Richardson? I think they're reasoning is that Kamila is underage. I don't understand why she brings up the death of her mother here.

I think the real reason is because Kamila is Russian.

I watched Kamila's short program and Bolero program again. The number of jumps she did in Bolero was amazing and certainly makes me think the drugs could have given her an advantage. She did test negative at the Olympics though. Someone told me using those drugs changes how your muscles work so gives an advantage even when no longer on them. No idea if that's true. I'm just sad because she's a lovely skater.

In our Olympic unit study, this brought in additional topics of drug use and cheating. When my ds sees her on TV, he says, "There's the cheater," which again makes me sad because this 15 yr old girls reputation has been ruined

I believe the med she was taking would increase her stamina and allow her to practice longer and harder. Microdosing allows the meds to work and then exit the system before testing. Likely, other athletes from the same coach/rink/doctor are doped as well, but the testing didn’t catch it. She’s 15, so doubtful she sought this out on her own.  But underage doping is also not okay, so I’m not sure why that is getting a pass with the CAS.

My kids were born in San Antonio.  We had moved there from Denver.  My oldest kid was given a snowsuit as a newborn.  Also, my kid had sensory issues and LOVED the cold.  Wanted their baths entirely with cold water, no hot mixed in.  Loved cold weather.  So it would be in the low 60's and everyone around us would be bundled up in parkas, and I'd have my infant in a long sleeved onesie and my toddler in knit pants, a tshirt, and I'd be carrying their light jacket.  The poor Mexican grandmothers thought I was the worst parent ever.

When we first moved here (and not from somewhere like Canada... just from a colder part of Texas), I was constantly shamed for allowing my kids to wear flip flops when it was "cold." I knew we had acclimated when we made our kids go back in the house for hoodies and then started the car, and the outdoor temp gage clicked on with a reading of 74!

  12. It sounds like she may still be in the window for monoclonal antibodies. It may be difficult to get them because only one brand still works against omicron and this brand was previously only about 10% of the market. Sotromivab is the only one that works against omicron. Do not let them give her regeneron (regen-cov) or bamlanivimab. (How places are still administering monoclonals that don't work is baffling to me.) It would be worth the hunt to get monoclonals on board. They are given free of charge via IV.

You have to get monoclonals while you are still relatively healthy. Once you need oxygen, you are no longer eligible. Don't waste time waiting to see where this heads.

  13. We were originally planning on heading to Cancun in January to celebrate our 20th anniversary. I’m a little reluctant to travel internationally when my phone is popping up with alerts like, “covid blizzard is incoming.” I’m considering looking at staying domestic just so we know we could get home no matter what happens.

Any recommendations on a gulf or Florida beach? I would like somewhere warm enough to lay outside and read a book on the beach for hours everyday. I don’t care about it being warm enough to swim. So, scenic book reading location??
