  1. Terrible post title, but that's the most concise way of asking my question. I've been putting off getting a couple of moles looked at, but I promised DH I would finally make an appointment today. One practice that was recommended by several people on our local Facebook group is certified in Mohs, but they also advertise vag1nal rejuvenation. (I'm trying not to have this post come up if anyone searches the topic, thus the weird spelling.) Does that seem off-putting to anyone else? Or do dermatologists just make more money from the more cosmetic procedures while still carefully treating more serious skin issues? At least one person mentioned that the doctor had caught their skin cancer, but the other cosmetic services just throw me off.

  2. I remember one time on one of those Tv shows where they interview lottery winners, the one guy had won over a hundred million and was literally homeless when he won. He said in the interview he had a cleaning lady, but that he does not allow her to clean his kid's room. Allegedly the kid said, "Why not? We're superrich!" To which he replied, "no, I'm super rich. You have to learn to be responsible for your own room." :D

I think it was Warren Buffet who said he wanted to leave his kids enough money that they could do anything they want, but not so much that they could do nothing. I like that idea. DH wouldn't quit his job completely, but would do far more pro bono work, and take more time with us as a family. Our kids would be able to study interesting things, but not fail out of college due to partying with the idea that they could fall back on their inheritance.

  3. DH splurged and bought two tickets. And our kids got a lecture about how we're more likely to get struck by lightning than win, and you should never, ever gamble more than you can very comfortably lose. And then we talked about the crazy extravagant things we could do if we won. Like endowing the history department at our alma mater and paying off our mortgage. DH disagreed with me on taking private planes for really cool homeschool field trips. I argued that if we had the means to avoid the chance of getting held hostage on the tarmac with flight delays, even in first class, why wouldn't we?

  4. Well, you are Catholic, aren't you? ;-)

When my dad's mom moved into a retirement home, another resident noticed how she had regular visits from her multiple middle-aged children, young adult grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The woman asked just how many children Grandma had, and when she said she had six, the woman replied, "You must be Catholic." I try to be charitable and assume the woman was just jealous that my grandma had so many visitors.

We have a slightly larger home, but I would be willing to bet that my family with three kids has a smaller carbon footprint than my child free SIL and her husband. We don't travel nearly as much as they do, and have far fewer electronics and other toys. They traveled to Sweden to pick up SIL's new Volvo and have it shipped back a few years ago. I've also never ripped out and redone my kitchen just because it's slightly dated. They will be the first to talk about the dangers of overpopulation though.

  5. My mom wore very basic makeup for work (as a teacher) and to church. I don't remember if she wore it when she stayed home with us full time when I was younger. She always looked nice, but never wore full eighties makeup like a few of the moms at school. In spite of her sister trying to talk her into it for my wedding, she's never colored her graying hair.

My mom never really taught me about makeup, but allowed me to start wearing what I was comfortable with in high school. I wish I had learned about concealer sooner, but I developed a pretty easy Bobbi Brown makeup routine before going away to college. I found cheaper substitutes, and pared down from full foundation with eyeliner and mascara every day, to under eye concealer, bb cream, a little blush, and lip balm. It takes less than five minutes. I wear more for special events. I blow dry my hair if I'm going somewhere most of the time, but I don't have to do it like I did in college. I still haven't decided on starting to color my grays, although I plan to talk to my stylist about it when I go for my every six months cut in a few weeks.

I think I generally follow my mom in trying to look nice and a bit polished, but not flashy or trendy.
