  1. We play math games and read living math books.  We've got some Marilyn Burns math books planned for this summer, and we'll probably continue with Life of Fred and Beast Academy a bit over this summer, as well.  She'll probably get a couple of long division problems per week, so she doesn't forget them, as well as an area/perimeter problem once or twice a week with different shapes.  We'll continue MUS from where we leave off at maybe a quarter speed.  We will take a week's complete break over the 4th of July week and 2 weeks completely off at the end of August, so no math or anything resembling school then.  We still consider summer part of our school year and have more of a vacation from November to mid-January (at which time she'll do nearly no math) but we like to give summer a different flavor, anyhow.

  2. I attended high school for a short time in El Cajon (1968). At that time, at that school, ninth was definitely high school and credits counted toward graduation. Mr. Ellie graduated from Helix High School in La Mesa in 1967; ninth counted then, as well.  And it was that way when I lived in California (1974-2004). Perhaps it was just your particular county or something.

Funny . . . it must have been different in the different districts.  Right next door, in La Mesa, I went to Jr. High for 7th-9th and High School for 10th-12th.  This was in the '80's (class of 1990).

ETA:  I just saw your latest post.  La Mesa must have been a San Diego city school vs. county.  :)

  3. We do math at breakfast.  First thing in the morning is DD's best time for math, and she somehow is less distracted (both with eating and with math) when she's doing the two simultaneously.  It seems like when we do them separately, they each take twice as long.  Meanwhile, I get a little more time to drink my coffee and wake up.  :)

  4. We like Violet Bing books (a fairly new series) and Clementine books for girl characters who are plucky but not too snotty.  Also, for fairy-loving girls, I find that the Flower Fairies books by Cicily Mary Barker, The Fairy Chronicles series by J.H. Sweet, the Disney Fairies chapter books (surprisingly), and Emily Rodda's Fairy Realm series are far better than the Daisy Meadows fairy books (which make me twitch).  We also love pretty much anything by Enid Blyton around here, too (Amelia Jane books, My Naughty Little Sister books, The Wishing Chair and Enchanted Forest books are favorites at our house).  Carolyn Hayward books are fun and plentiful (B is for Betsy and sequels, Penny books, and others).  Also, when my daughter was just beginning to read chapter books, she really liked ones like "Stories for 6 Year Olds" (you can find lots of those with all sorts of ages) because they were paperbacks with chapters, but as each chapter was its own story they were a little bit more manageable.  I love all the other suggestions up there, too!

  5. We'll be continuing math and spelling half time, playing math games and reading some living books on math, doing some science experiments and reading through The Story Book of Science, doing a geography unit, playing logic games and doing some logic workbooks, doing more art, perhaps starting piano, practicing the Spanish we've learned and watching some Spanish DVDs, starting The Private Eye, and reading literature and poetry from the ever-growing basket of read alouds we're collecting.  Summer is not really a break for us, it's more of a "slow down and do some different things" time.  Our main break is over the holidays.

  6. We finish up our history and planned literature (SL core) by the end of June, then take the 1st week of July totally off.  For the rest of July and half of August we do math and spelling half speed Monday-Thursday, taking 3 day weekends.  We then take 2 more weeks totally off and begin the next school year the day after Labor Day.  Throughout the summer we dive into the big box of read-alouds we'd like to go through, and we may do some other subjects we don't generally get to during the rest of the year (we're doing a geography unit this summer).  We also do some science experiments we may not have gotten to during the year.  Our main break is actually Thanksgiving week through DD's birthday week (2 weeks after Christmas) as we'd like to really be able to focus on the holidays.  We still do a couple of math pages per week (however she wants to split them up) and some random spelling words throughout the break.  We also take 2 weeks off at Easter and periodic 1 week breaks from tablework as seems needed.  We do both start to get cranky if we go too long without the rhythm of the school routine.

  7. We've been using EIW Grade 1 for grammar and writing, and AAS for spelling.  I don't see the need to a separate reading program if they're already reading well.  We also use Evan Moore Daily Language Review (takes just a couple of minutes).  Other than that, we just use a handwriting program and call it good for LA.

  8. Hi!  I'm Julie, and I'm homeschooling a delightful little terror named Ella.  She's 7 and in 1st grade.  I read TWTM before she was even conceived and thought I had her education planned through high school!   Since then we've made several adjustments and I wandered away from strictly classical education, finding it a bit too intimidating.  The only constant so far has been a devotion to learning through living books.

I've honestly stayed away from TWTM forums in the past, due to feeling a bit inadequate (and knowing that I can start to take on too much for our family when I feel that way) but I ended up reading the CIRCE threads and felt a beautiful breath of peace.  Those threads have resonated with my soul and opened my eyes to the box-checking that has crept into our school.  They reminded me of the vision I had when we started.  So I've decided to jump into the forum for more of that!  I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.
