  1. We are not using basal readers. MTH are easy for him to read se he doesn't get discouraged and I don't have to fight him to read on his own. I've been having a hard time finding things that are just above this level for him to read. We live in a small town and have a limited library selection. I did randomly stumble across a book about a gladiator boy that he has started and seems to enjoy but I will look into these suggestions. We read harder things together but I want him to read on his own also.
  2. I could use some guidance my ds8 is a good reader but does not enjoy the act of reading one bit. He likes to be read to sometimes. He enjoys things like the Hobbit and How to Train Your Dragon but they are above his reading level and he gets discouraged easily. Are there any books on the same level as Magic Tree House that are maybe a little more adventurous?
  3. Thank you fro the feedback. My ds is 8 and finishing 2nd and my dd is 5 and finishing kinder. It sounds like for us it would really only replace our history in the elementary level but may be beneficial when they get older and need government. For history this year we have been using The Mystery of History and have been liking it for the most part. Some days I think I enjoy it more than they do.
  4. We just got a couple of tablets and want to load some educational apps on them. our kids are 5(kinder) and 8(2nd). What would you recommend?
  5. This is my first year homeschooling and I pieced our curriculum together with the help of a couple friends and hours of research. We started with limited funds this last year so I didn't consider anything like TOG. But this year since I'm planning ahead I can. I'm still nervous though that my kids are getting everything they need. Anyone who uses TOG what else do you add besides math, science, and art?
  6. We live in Kingston in the texoma region. This is our first year to homeschool. My DS is 7, DD5, and DS8months. I'm finding there isn't much in the way of co-ops and groups in this area. If you're in the area I'd love to hear from you. :)
  7. I have finally decided to officially take the plunge and homeschool. My DS is 7 and supposed to be starting the 2nd grade. I'm reading the WTM but am kind of on information overload!! Since I'm wanting to do the classical method and follow the yearly outline of the WTM for English (reading topics), History, and Science should I start with the information he would have learned in 1st grade and just do it at his level or just dive in and do the 2nd grade topics. In the History chapter it suggested starting at the 1st grade level but I didn't see that suggestion in all the discussion of what to read for English. Need help making this decision...Suggestions welcome!
