The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science: 64 Daring Experiments for Young Scientists on Amazon looks great, too! My rising 7th grader will also do chemistry this year and wants to "blow things up". We'll do physical science for 8th grade. Happy chemistry!

Yes. My older son did BJU Life Science in 6th...very strong, mathematically-inclined, science-loving boy. It was one of the best courses we have done in all these years of homeschooling (did not use the dvds).
I plan to also use the course with my younger son, but I am waiting for his 7th grade year. He is more of a reader/dreamer/thinker. :)
Sorry to jump in in the middle, but... Morning Glory, what did you use after that? We, too, will finish up BJU Life Science at the end of 6th grade. It's been a good challenge, but I am at a loss where to go next. Physical in 7th, Biology in 8th?

Just a caution.... While the labs have cemented understanding of concepts, I think Rainbow is weak on explaining terms. You may want to supplement that aspect.
Any recommendations?

Thank you all so much!! I hate buying sight unseen, but this makes me sure about it! I want him to LOVE science and BJU has about killed it this year. He wants to do 1/2 year A&P, as well. So if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!
What will you use for 8th? Will this fit into your science sequence?6th: Life Science
7th: Rainbow Yr 1 (Intro Physics & Chem)
8th: Earth & Space? Or IPC? Or Physical Science?
9th: Biology
etc...
I am thinking that's what it will look like, but not sure. I cannot take an entire year of earth and space-neither could he. :) I'm trying to follow his interests and let him go until high school.

My 6th grader will finish BJU Life Science this year (it's been a longgg year!). I'd like him to have a good generaly science experiance in 7th grade - fun, challenging (but not too much)- and that gets him ready for high school. I was thinking of Rainbow, but afraid it's not meaty enough. Any thoughts?

I looked at the Advanced Chem and it looks great! But, ds wants to "blow things up, not cook" for experiments. I've looked At Rainbow, as well, but hesitate b/c of the $$ and not being able to see it before I buy it. BJU is too dry and intense for us next year ( and I can't take a full year of earth and space).

I am looking at this for my rising 7th grader. We are finishing up BJU Life science this year. Mr. Q's looks good, but I am wondering if maybe too light? What if we double timed it and did Elem. Chem and Physics in one year? How does it compare with Rainbow? Which would get him ready for Conceptual Physics, CPO, or another strong Physical science in 8th?

I honestly don't know how challenging it is (maybe someone else here could let us know), but Mr. Q's new Advanced Chemistry looks like a lot of fun. All of the labs are food related and done in the kitchen. It says it is from ages 12-18 .

Just a thought...

I do not presume to tell you what to do, but I was in a similar situation with my 2 boys. They are 2 years/grades apart and were doing the same math program and level. I had to do a different math curriculum with the younger one because my older son began comparing himself to his younger brother. This brought on sooo much self doubt for older son since he struggled to keep up and younger son was breezing through. It was much more work for me, but I am glad we switched to 2 different curriculums. Blessings to you as you find what fits your family.

Thank you for your insight!! My ds who's doing BJU Life Science this year is bored with it, but when he looked at the Apologia text decided he didn't like the wordiness. So... now it's between Rainbow and PH with the AW.
The BJU Earth Science has been rewritten for the new edition. It looks MUCH better. I wasn't even going to consider it, given our experience with the Life Science, but the new edition looks so good, so readable, I think that's the direction we're going.__________________
I've not seen the new BJU - but the thought of an entire year of earth and space makes me want to :banghead:. But, I'll look :)

I have researched until I am exhausted... I THINK I have my choices for next year narrowed down to 2 options - Apologia General Science/Physical Science or Awakening Wonder which uses PH Explorer. I know that one is Christian based and one is secular based. I am not bothered by either. I want the one that will provoke interest, thought and excitement. What's your opinion on either of these? Help please!!

Moneyskill.org is a free site. i haven't used it yet, but plan to do so this summer.

Thanks! I will check it out!

I am planning on using the Dive or the Rusty Hughes dvd with Apologia chemistry/advanced chemistry. I haven't made up my mind completely, though the Dive looks wonderful. My question is the lab kit. Is the price of the Dive lab kit worth the almost $300?! Any other kits you recommend that will go just fine with Dive, but don't cost as much? Thanks so much for your input!

"My daughter used both the DVD by Rusty Hughes and Kahn Academy for Apologia Chemistry this year. It's fairly easy to figure out which Kahn videos correspond to which areas of Apologia. She just chose which videos to watch after reading the material and watching the DVD. "

Did she enjoy the Hughes dvd? Was it helpful? Or could you have done without and just used Khan?

I am interested, too! Wanting to use his Chemistry dvd.
-
Or should I just purchase the Rusty Hughes dvd for Apologia Chemistry?

My dd will do chemistry this summer in order to move into A&P for 11th grade and take Advanced Chem in 12th. She likes the layout of Apologia and the wordiness - she's a reader. I am looking for a "schedule" of sorts to line it up with Khan Academy. Anyone else done this?

Dive Chemistry & Landry lab intensive...

Can I count this as Honors level on a trascript? We are using the 2 Apologia texts, doing labs at home and will also attend the Landry 2 day Lab Intensive class. Also thinking of having someone grade her lab reports...
Thanks!
