  1. I struggle with depression and generalized sadness, grumpiness, etc.

I've been doing the 'word of the year' for a few years now (I started with word of the month too, I like that better and the monthly 'words' dovetail with my big annual 'word) and every single year my word has been "Joy".

for me, its about being in the present. when I catch myself I stop and take a deep breath and try to Be in the Moment. you know? when the regrets from the past and worries for the future are pushed aside, I feel very much alive. and that's usually enough to bring a smile to my face and quicken my pulse just a bit.

I've also started doing a five min gratitude exercise just before falling asleep, it helps me sleep better and good sleep helps me feel joyful.

I try to feed my soul regularly, connecting to G-d makes me feel joyful.

I still have trouble lightening up, laughing, etc and I dont know if I will ever get there, but I am so grateful to say that I have begun to experience joy. and I never thought I'd get there either.

sometimes just setting the focus helps you achieve even if you dont know the 'why's' or 'how's' of it.

  2. my dd (ninth grade, private schooled) decided that she would like to write a short story. some background...she is a struggling student to put it mildly. I dont believe that she has ever actually read a short story on her own. obviously I want to encourage this sudden burst of unexpected initiative. I gently suggested that she try reading some short stories to help her get a 'feel' for the rhythm of a short story. she keeps asking for my opinion on what she's written and honestly, its pretty bad. I dont say that, of course. I find something she's done well and try to get her to stretch from there, but its clear that she has no clue. I cannot address this as I would with one of my other kids because of her anxiety issues coupled with some mother/daughter stuff we have going on. she has clearly told me that she 'would rather die' than have me teach her. so I cant come across as teaching anything.  when I suggested that she read, she seemed interested, which is AWESOME because she hates hates hates to read.

and that brings me to my question...

anyone have any recommendations? She's 15 yo but probably on a 6th grade reading level. I'm looking for short stories, not essays, and secular only.

    thanks in advance :)

  3. student text came today and I started going through it .... I. Am. In. Love.

comparing it to dd's algebra text (she's in a private high school) is like night and day. I just love the clean layout, the clear wording, its like a breath of fresh air.

    I hope ds likes it.

my question for those of you who have used this book, do you have your child do all of the problems? up until now we've been using saxon and I know that each and every one of those review problems is there for a specific reason, not just to keep practicing the same thing. this book seems to have loads and loads of problems and I'm wondering if we can skip some if he's getting them right.

  4. We used 1999 student and teacher text. The solution manual was from the publisher and it had no date on it.  It worked fine.

    student 020132458X

    teacher 0201324598

    solution 0201861003 (Algebra 1 only)

I like using www.addall.com with the ISBN.

Many people do without the teacher text.  I like all the help I can get.  ;)

    HTH!

the cheapest addall.com can find for the solution manual is over $80, the company sells it for $44 but will not allow me to check out with a personal credit card. apparently I need a school credit card. maybe I will call them tomorrow and see if they will work with me.

I ordered the teacher guide on amazon, I definitely need all the help I can get : )

  5. I think you can calm down a bit. my dd (not homeschooled) started high school this year. she came in to ninth grade on a THIRD grade math level, and is on a 2-year algebra 1 track. thus far, she is maintaining an 86 average. not too shabby for someone with the background she has. your dd, otoh, seems to be getting a solid math education. its very likely she will speed up at some point, or even if not, big deal. so she finishes algebra 1 in 10th gr. I dont see a huge problem there.

btw, my dd passionately wants to be a dentist. she's got the grit, so I encourage her to pursue it. she knows it will take her longer than some of her peers, but so what? life is not a race.

  6. YES. my 12 yo ds is an 'I dont wanna' today. so fine, be that way. his younger brother worked hard this morning and then I had to go out so I set him up with his new book, Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction and a pile of supplies. came home and the two of them are making all sorts of wonderful things. then we make our donut dough, set it to rise and took the dog for a loooong walk in the woods. came home thinking I am supermom, I salvaged the day, moods are good, work will be done! but then, older ds got frustrated with his pen canon, slammed his door and said 'and dont even think of asking me to do math today!'. mmmhmmm. I'll let math go but not the attitude. like you say, aint nobody got time for that.

I tell ya, teenager-y boys throw me through a loop like nothing else. my teen dd, I get. him? not so much.

  7. I just got the Innocenti edition from amazon (with my 30% off bookdeal) and I want to thank you all for recommending it. my 6 yo cannot get enough of it. I'm reading a few chapters before bed, and he's begging for more and the illustrations are just perfect. we are enjoying! thanks Plateau Mama, for posting :001_smile:

  8. we did this in september. we used two extra packets of unflavored gelatin along with the lemon jello and refrigerated it overnight. it was ok except in the middle,it was not really liquidy but not really firm. the candies werent in long enough to liquefy, my 4 yo insisted on plucking out the mike and ikes shortly after the cells were finished and there went that.

if I did it again, I might see if I could get some agar. I used to make 'jello' out of agar and grape juice back in the day when I did things like that. its a lot firmer than gelatin.

  9. If my kids miss their bus I will drive them to school. And then they owe me for my time spent driving them, they pay me in housework related chores. So far no ones missed the bus this year although my 6 yo often goes without haven eaten his breakfast, he dreams at the table instead of eating and I simply do not hav ethe time or patience to nag him to ensure that he eats. I pack him lots of healthy snacks which I assume he eats on the bus

  10. Personally I'd go with AoPS or Dolciani, however pick what works for your child, and plan to cover all the objectives.  For one child, I pulled the Foerster's book out occasionally, but Dolciani was his main.  His school doesn't use texts but follows AMSCO's layout closely.

Agree with other posters -- the math dept is not revamping anything for Common Core...it's a relabel just like switching from Math A & B to Integrated Algbebra 1 etc.

The only unique to NY version of A1 topic  in the curriculum that I noticed was the binary operations material: http://www.jmap.org/JMAP/RegentsExamsandQuestions/PDF/WorksheetsByPI-Topic/IntegratedAlgebra/Number_Sense_and_Operations/A.N.1.BinaryOperations.pdf

I am admittedly confused by the common core business. my dd is in 9th grade in a private high school, the entire math department is antsy about this years regents. they tell me that the questions are worded very differently than in years passed and there is more covered in the curriculum. this is the first year this school is teaching Algebra 1 aligned with CC, so they are worried about their weaker students (like my dd, who is on a two-year algebra 1 track). in theory I could use dd's textbook, but it really stinks. I'm actually planning to use whatever I pick up for ds to afterschool dd.

I guess I'll just teach algebra and then use regents study guides.

and re SUNY colleges, I went to Downstate and got a really good and affordable education.  I would like to keep that option open even if he wasnt wanting to go to high school, although I hear that there are ways around taking regents. I thought if you applied as a transfer student from another college they wouldnt ask for a hs diploma?

  11. We live on a slab foundation, and with six kids, my dishes are always getting broken. I have three different types right now, and half of those are chipped, except the Corelle. Those don't chip, they either don't break at all or break into a zillion pieces.

After a bit of searching, these are the next dishes I'm buying. They're stainless steel, so no more worries about broken dishes! I just put them on my wish list for this year, but I don't think I'll get them for Christmas. I'll probably have to save up and buy them myself.

I also considered enamelware. Golden Rabbit has some really cute designs, but I was afraid that with my crew, the enamel would get chipped. And those are rather expensive.

I like those stainless dishes. I've never seen anything like that.

do you think they dent? or scratch? or get watermarks?

  12. we have mikasa stoneware and they get those lines too. I hate it.

we also have royal doulton everyday china which I love love love. we got them at a clearance center and I'm so happy I splurged on them, we have them 15 years and they are as good as new. they also dont chip the way the stoneware does.

my mil has corelle, they are ok.

one of these days I will replace my mikasa stoneware with china.
