I would encourage her to look at some sites like Sonlight, my fathers world, veritas press, Biblioplan, and memoria press and see what she feels drawn to.
Memoria press is great for a "packaged math and LA" that is great. Then history and science can be done together. Personally, I wouldn't do SL core B with a fourth grader... Maybe B&C the combined year? Might be a lot for the first grader but could be adjusted. I love SL but the cores don't always make it easy to do age gaps.
Each year I go to those tried and true draw me in sites and see what they are doing for those ages...it helps me put together a plan for us that I feel comfortable with because it is "based off of" packaged curriculum. :)

A friend of mine will be homeschooling three of her four dc, with a new one due soon! This is her first year having all the kids home. School-age DC will be in fourth, 2nd, and 1st grade. Add to that a preschooler who will be in on everything;) plus a newborn. Is it just me, or does jumping in later, vs. hs from the beginning feel a lot harder?
The kids are transitioning from private school situation. Any ideas for curricula that are open and go, that will, hopefully, aid her in giving her a love for educating her kids in this season?
I was going to suggest Paths of Exploration, as I think she could combine the kids with that program? Any other ideas?

Did you use Before FIAR? Or were the FIAR volumes more appropriate?

I really wanted an all in one program--something like Phonics Road. But DS is accelerated some places and not others so it just wouldn't work for us :(
Yes, my dd would definitely feel like we were reviewing most of the time if we started with PR at this point.

For my kids, I found that their skills in LA varied. Spelling was one level, grammar was another, writing another, and reading still another. It always worked best for us to mix and match to fit the child.
I hadn't considered this before, but it makes sense!

We went through AAS1, for K-1st grade, and dd basically learned to read from using this program. Since I've never used a formal reading curriculum, can't shake the feeling that I should ground her in phonics, although she reads very fluently.
If I piece together, I'm looking at WWE, FLL, AAS2, plus handwriting instruction.
Do these sound like they would flow well? Any thoughts on scheduling to avoid burnout for my dd?
I think I like the PR approach because our LA would be one chunk of the day, and boom, we're done.
But piecing together feels more flexible.

Starting out school this year with a 2nd grade, a K5, 2 yr old, and 4 month old...could use some wisdom! There are so many wonderful LA programs out there, and I've done the research to know what I'd like to use. My question is, have any of you had better success and sanity with an all-in-one LA, such as PR, rather than piecing together the different components? Specifically with the tender ages of my kids:) Many thanks!

Getting ready to use this guide for the second time around!
I'm dreading our long stay with the pilgrims, though, while using the Stories of the Pilgrims spine.
Anyone use an alternative history book?
Did you replace Stories of the Pilgrims altogether? Or has anyone come up with a great book (or 2!) to complement this spine and guide?
