  1. My younger two are going to be in 1st and 2nd grade next year. I was planning to do My Fathers World Adventures, but now I am considering Story of the World and a book basket of living books for science (or Apologia Astronomy). Which option do you recommend?

  2. My kids are both taking math classes through the live co-op in Tampa with Mr. D. math. DS is taking Geometry this year and took Algebra I last year. DD is taking Pre-Algebra this year. We have no experience with Chalk Dust.

I love Mr. D. because the curriculum is challenging enough without being overwhelming. It's a mastery based approach, with online quizzes for each section and spiral reviews every 3 sections. Everything is done online. Occasionally one will forget a concept from class, and will go back to watch the pre-recorded video for that section, but neither has ever needed the online help sessions. Mr. D. also teaches readiness courses for 6 weeks over the summer, and both of my kids have done those and liked them.

thank you so much for this! I was especially curious if Mr. D taught using a mastery method, which is what we want! Thanks again!

  3. Does anyone have experience with either of these? My DD11 is finishing up Singapore 5B and we are trying to decide between Chalk Dust Basic Math and then continuing with CD for Pre-Algebra and beyond OR do Singapore 6a/b and then move into Mr. D Math for Pre-Algebra and beyond. Any advice?

  4. Please direct me to a different thread if this has already been discussed. I am looking for a good simple cursive curriculum for my DD9 to do this summer/fall. She has excellent manuscript, but she would like to learn cursive. I've considered HWT but it's not very aesthetically pleasing. I'm considering New American Cursive, but does it actually teach the student the strokes or is it just trace and copy? What about Rhythm of Handwriting from LOE? I don't want anything too involved. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

  5. Our plans for third grade are shaping up:

Shurley 4 (We are skipping Shurley 3.)

    Building Spelling Skills

    Pentime

Writing With Ease (from teacher's manual) along with CAP's Writing and Rhetoric (He saw the samples and is super excited.

Story of the World 3 with some American History supplements

    Elemental Science Biology

    CAP's God's Great Covenant

    CAP's Song School Spanish

We will finish Saxon 3 and do the Life of Fred elementary series to give him a bit of a break before starting 5/4 and supplementing with LOF. I want to practice his math facts with him more too so he knows them more solidly and with more speed.

    Piano

Drawing with Children along with Draw Write Now and Discovering Great Artists for art

He's also going to start scouts and possibly 4-H. He's begging to do horse back riding.

I noticed that you are skipping Shurley 3- can you explain why you are skipping a level? I just finished Shurley 2 with DD and was planning to start Shurley 3 for third grade, but now I'm wondering if I should do 4? Any insight would be great! Thanks!
  6. hey there- i know it's been a while since y'all posted on this topic, but i am debating between continuing with AAR or moving to LofE for my DD 1st grade year next year. I really do love AAR and she has loved it, too, but when comparing what her big sister learned in Phonics via A Beka, I agree with specialkmom that AAR doesn't seem as comprehensive as it should be. She is in the middle of AAR2 and has just finished AAS1 and moving into AAS2, and like I said, we love it, but I feel like there's something missing. What did y'all decide to use?
