  1. I have also been looking for American History for my son and came across American the Beautiful that seems to be well organized and laid out nicely. Upon doing some research, it appears that there is an abundance of information which several moms do not like, but to me, that just means flexibility in what I cover....just move quickly through some subjects, skip, or do it all. Unfortunately, I do not have experience with HOD. You can get samples of America the Beautiful at the Notgrass website and check it out.

  2. Ditto to others...I started PAL reading with my begging to learn how to read 4 yo and we are on lesson 33. I break up each lesson into 2 days. My son is already decoding words and this was his first intro to phonics. He is almost ready to write so I haven't pulled out the writing yet but plan to start this summer...he turns 5 in June so soon after that I'll start. I also agree with the first poster that it's easier to put the folder games together first. I usually cut the game pieces out with him though. It will look overwhelming at first but once you just jump in, you'll get it. It takes us about 10 minutes per day for each 1/2 lesson because my son is wiggly! It's a great program. I wouldn't think of doing another program.

  3. I used Positive Action for Christ, Building Life Castles for teaching kids at church this past winter. It is a survey of the NT but goes deeper than anything I have found for the elementary and middle school aged children. It's not a single book of the Bible though. They also have a Proverbs study but it's for older students. If you check their website, click on the resources tab and then the homeschool selection. The titles of their studies are by grade level but I used successfully the 4th grade book with 3rd through 5th grade. You can view the scope and sequence for each study they have in one PDF file...just get to one study then scroll down after the description for the file. In all my research it is hard to find something that isn't entertainment driven so much so it detracts from God's word...makes me crazy! I have also used Bible Study for All Ages activity pages successfully with my 3-4 yo. Both are on rainbowresource for a discount.

  4. Mistiblue02, your description of your DD sounds very much like my DS in that he always asks to do lessons or why not more...plus he requests that I teach him about whatever. This week it is anatomy....bones, joints, the names of all of them, etc. he'll be 5 in June. I used the pre-k Singapore math with him but he, like another poster, was overstimulated and distracted, so I switched to Saxon and we flew through Saxon K and are 18 lessons into Saxon 1. He asks to do more math everyday now. Since he is so inquisitive and loves learning, I picked up "Adventures in America" which is geared toward his age and includes learning all the states and capitals. I use PAL from institute for excellence in writing for him which is reading and writing in 2 separate books/programs. He is reading now....decoding and learning sight words. It also comes with AAS which we won't start until he starts to write. He hasn't been ready to write...but I think it will be soon. PAL is awesome once you jump in and see how it works. He loves it. As far as science, I'll wait until he is closer to 6. We also have Bible lessons. I am trying to decide when to start Song School Latin....anyone use that? From the outside, it seems like so much for a 4 year old but he loves it and I am very relaxed about it so he enjoys it.

  6. It really depends on what you want to use it for in terms of complexity and depth of whatever your children are studying. As a microbiologist before my ds arrived, I have used a few microscopes! The one you have found is pretty inexpensive and good for basic micro viewing but that is about it. It is basic because it does not appear to be a compound microscope which uses a dual lens system as opposed to just zooming in on an object. Take note of the 5 yr warranty in case you will want to use it longer term.

If I were going to buy a microscope right now, being one that I would use all through elementary and high school, it would be this one: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/national-optical-131-microscope/p/MI-3SCOPE/

Of course if we have the money for it! This one is a compound microscope and it has a lifetime warranty.

It really does come down to how much your children will use it and what your goals are. Good luck!

  7. I use BSGFAA with my 3yo, soon to be 4. We use the beginner activity pages, the wall timeline, beginner timeline, and maps. He loves it and asks to learn more. He knows Joseph's history along with the names of his brothers. We started Daniel this week and my son talks about it daily. We also listen to the CD, 100 Bible Stories and Songs which result in my son asking when he will learn about Esther, Moses, Nehemiah, etc. I also made booklets using the BSGFAA story pictures that we use for review. It was worth every penny!
