  1. I can't talk you into it or out of it as I am in the same valley of decision myself! But I can say I am leaning heavily towards it. I feel it's financially attainable because you can buy the ebooks by unit and that's only $45! If I plan right, I can order books from amazon, eBay and request from the library as we go. I know for a fact I can't buy the whole shebang up front. I'm ok with that though because I wouldn't want to sink that much money into something and then realize its not exactly what we needed. I found some really great TOG planning/notebooking tutorials and ideas on YouTube and I'm really inspired to get started on it and its not even fall yet. ;)

  2. Thank you thank you thank you everyone! I can't tell you how helpful this is.

I will definitely order books myself or use library for either choice.

I greatly value the insight regarding CATW being repetitive. I can imagine that! Maybe I can find some extra culture studies to weave into everything myself later if we have time.

We tried ANWOA once and although the activities were great, the reading passages were way too lengthy for early readers and myself to plow through aloud. I tend to be a "box checker" so weeding stuff out is hard on me-I worry I'm wasting my money or not getting the full effect the writer intended. I know I will have to curb this habit when using TOG.

I'm excited because I feel TOG is reasonable financially, and will be flexible enough for my varied grades.

I have this fear that my kids are growing up too quickly, and that I will discover the perfect and most amazing curriculums when it's too late to use them. I might have to adopt more children LOL

  3. Why oh why does this happen to me?!?!? I have made a decision to branch out and try something new next year and now I'm totally in the valley of decision as to using WP or TOG.

I am going to print out samples of each to play with for the next few weeks but I seriously need some veterans to list the pros and cons of each to help guide my decision.

Factors or concerns I can see are:

WP is expensive especially if I need to buy more than one theme/year for my grades. (3, 5, 9, 10)

Do I want my students on separate tracks? Can I manage more than one theme of WP? TOG seems to allow for all to be on one track more seamlessly.

But WP's Children ATW looks amazing.

If I want to cycle my students history, starting with ancients now would be ideal.

(((Sigh))) and now I lie here awake with these thoughts flooding my mind. Am I the only one who does this???? 😳

  4. This thread is hilarious and so interesting. Definitely puts perspective on boys! I have 2 myself, as well as 2 girls. It is intriguing how different each of them are.

I know it's sad when we want a certain curriculum or style but the kids think ball and chain and dungeon like thoughts about it.

I have one son who would do SOTW all day every day, and the other despises the very sound of Jim Weiss' voice. Phonetic Zoo-they snicker and howl at the "jingles" that I thought would be so helpful.

Short and to the point is what works best for us-although they will read for hours on subject matter of their choice which is Lord of the Rings trilogy and Christopher Paolini series at the moment.

As far as things they really like, we enjoy the nature study units by Sandy Queen, "My Side of the Mountain" was a big hit. They also enjoy anything hands on.

Some areas I just can't please them, so we just tell them "Sometimes life isn't all peaches and roses guys!"

Btw what is WWS? I'm assuming its a writing course?

  5. The abbreviations annoy me as well. I've homeschooled for 8 years and have used a plethora of popular curriculums but still struggle with identifying every acronym. When I use abbreviations I try to spell them out first to eliminate any confusion. There are way too many new systems popping up each and everyday to abbreviate them all and expect people to know what they are. LOL

So I know and use Writing with Ease but what is WWS?

I will need something beyond WWE 3 next year. :)

  6. I am just discovering TOG and am so very interested in beginning it next year for my 3rd, 5th, 9th, and 10th grade students. The curriculum itself seems quite reasonable but I am wondering about all the supplemental books. With the varied age span I have, when I searched the bookstore there was 145 titles!

I did see many that I'm sure are available at the library or perhaps more reasonably other places (although the prices are not too bad it's just adding it all up)

Do you find all the books suggested necessary? I'm sort of an all or nothing person-I don't want to jump into it if I can't do it with every bell and whistle. It really sounds like an amazing program. We will be using it along with SOTW for the younger 2.

  7. This is super great info....thanks so much! Please forgive me I haven't figured out how to "quote" people using the mobile app version of this site. I am going to chew on this info for sure!!!

As to the age gap between my 2 sets-it is definitely challenging. It is sad to say but my olders have not gone on any field trips lately. Luckily, they aren't opposed to younger minded things as I try to channel them into a leadership role and that helps. We don't live in an area where there's much to see-and financially are not able to take trips too far away. I have a hard time scheduling field trips and staying on top of lessons. We do take family trips and usually the week before I'm cramming extra work in to cover days we are taking off and I often feel I'm contributing to the quantity over quality phenomenon.

I wish I had a magic wand for this issue! My solution if at all possible would be to hire someone, ask hubby or ask a friend to help teach the youngers or take olders on a field trip if you feel it's an integral part of their education.

I have been in a tight spot like this when my youngest daughters co-op art class went to the pumpkin patch the same time as my olders co-op math classes started/stopped. I had to juggle all sorts of things to make sure everyone was where they needed to be when. Add sports, music lessons and whatnot on top of that and 4 kids can really be challenging. I've learned to whittle our activities down to what really matters and find ways to satisfy all. It's not easy!

  8. I have upcoming 9th and 10th grade students as well as 3rd and 5th. The olders have been through the SOTW cycle. The youngers have not. I am wondering if TOG year 1 would be a good fit for all of them. Perhaps the 10th grader will use something else-she is very independent and self driven. The 9th guy not so much 😡

Is TOG much more meaty than SOTW? I am very torn as to putting my 9th on the 4 year cycle or doing standard cycle as the 10th grader began. How can I get my 10th grader on track if I want her to do the classical cycle? I want to slap myself for letting her get off and taking normal standard coursework for her 9th grade year. :(

What does WTM recommend for high school? Is there a set curriculum available?

  9. I am the queen curriculum junkie and am already planning out next year-what is wrong with me?

I am wondering if anyone has an opinion as to whether or not it is ok to use WWE but not FLL, and use PLL/ILL instead? Or is there a way to combine all 3? It would be for grades 3 and 5. I really like both FLL and PLL/ILL but for some reason am leaning towards the PLL/ILL.

    Any thoughts?

  10. Good idea Tammy-and it's not that I'm willing to indulge it necessarily I just want to have the right perspective-she is highly motivated, an over achiever and I truly respect her opinion in what courses she takes.

I hope I didn't give the impression she stomps around and is an overall major brat about her work-that's not the case. ;)

She will be taking Chemistry, Geometry, and Spanish no question-I was hoping the WRMB or FAR would fill in for Literature and World History. I do want her to be somewhat interest led in this area since the other areas are mandatory. I think we have agreed upon a 1930's lit/hist course offered by a co-op.

I downloaded a sample of FAR and while it looks nice I can see it's very meaty and I would have to cut out a lot to include the subjects we've already set forth.

  11. My daughter is really picky and opinionated as to what she studies-of course she will agree to whatever her dad and I decide but I'd like to make her happy. I am interested in using the Where the River Meets the Brook unit study with her this coming year. She will be in 10th grade. But she has already read all of the Anne of Greene Gables books and knows them frontwards and backwards and I am afraid doing the study will be too redundant. She seems to think so too. It just looks so fun. Maybe I will have to save it for my next daughter. Does anyone have any ideas for another plan that might work for her? I'm looking at FAR and that's a possibility-although she is quite career minded-she enjoys homemaking and crafting/sewing as its a natural part of our school, but I do think she will be inclined to think FAR is just a bit too "homely". Any advice appreciated!!!!

  12. Hi all, I am new here but have been homeschooling for 8 years and have become somewhat of a curriculum junkie! I love WTM, and most of what I've used and am familiar with is secular. However, I have dabbled with some non secular unit studies and supplements. I am really wanting to explore the idea of trying MFW next year with my 3rd, 5th, and 9th grade students. I'm not sure if I would use it singularly, I am not sure if its full enough, or if I would still be able to use other books I like as well.

(WWE, AAS, 100 Days of Creation, SP, FLL)

Anyway, my question for anyone here is a bit of a favor-I have looked at the sample available at the MFW website, but I can't really get a feel for it. Does anyone have access to a copy that you would be willing to scan and email some pages out of it just to give me a taste of what it's all about? I've heard so many good things about it but I am afraid to purchase it if its not something we would get good use out of.

If this helps at all-we tried ANWOA last year, and although we loved the literature, the additional bible, science and history daily reading for us was just too much. My throat was raw the first day and attention spans were questionable. I ended up cutting the science out completely (too watered down) and unfortunately even left the bible out (did our own studies) as I felt the historical connections were most important for that particular unit approach.

I hope I am making a lick of sense....
