  1. I tried to vote 0-2 for the K-4 age bracket, but something went wrong.  The tough part with your poll is the unstructured part.  I have been looking, and have yet to find, for someone my childs age (6) to just come over and play.  Most of the parents, that I've met anyway, want to plan and structure every bit of their kids day.

  2. I had it and went to the doctor who told me I would have to forever wear supportive shoes.  I don't wear shoes in the house and during the summer I'm more often barefoot then with shoes on.  The doctor basically told me tough luck.

After researching for a bit, I found that most often it is tight muscles in the leg (don't remember if it is calf or hamstring).  I found that with stretching the calf (standing with my heels hanging over a stair) and bending over and touching the floor to stretch my hamstrings it cleared up.

Every time I feel it starting I do these stretches a few times a day and it clears up within a few days.

I will say I never had the pain you did.  I would hobble along the first hour or so I woke up and wouldn't be able to walk long distance, but it was more dull ache vs sharp pain.

  3. He is five, six next month.  I figured we would slowly plug along and eventually it would all come together, but he wants to write now.

I still really like the idea of teaching cursive first, but in reality I think it makes more sense to switch over to print.  When ds was in preschool he learned how to print all of the uppercase letters and I find him still doing this every time I'm not there saying cursive, cursive, cursive.

  4. It's funny about the STEM.  My husband and I are both engineers.  I don't think I've ever seen DH do anything but print.  I do a combination of print, cursive and my own shorthand.

I have been planning out our homeschool adventure since ds was about two.   In my head, he would be writing by now, but that image also included me doing arts and crafts on a daily basis and us always having a grand time while soaking up knowledge without even trying.  Reality is so much different.

I think I'm off to look into some handwriting programs.

  5. Thank you to all of you for offering suggestions.  I think we are going to switch to manuscript.  What Hunter said about being able to spell makes so much sense.

I think it was I have wanted to do, but needed some more experienced homeschoolers to tell me that it isn't failing if we give up on learning cursive first.  Instead it is following the student.  DS is only five.  I'm pretty sure not learning to write cursive first isn't going to be the downfall of his education.

  6. We are just finishing up level A of LOE foundations.  He has been spelling out cvc words with the movable alphabet for a while now, but that is still just individual phonograms.  It makes sense about struggling with cursive if not yet spelling well.  I wonder why I never thought of that.

We have been doing mostly oral outputs and up until recently that has been working out fine.  Lately, however, I can tell he is frustrated.  He is ready to write and not just narrate to me.

  7. Before we started homeschooling, I read all of research and the articles of why we should start cursive first.  So we did.  Now six months in, we're really struggling.  It just isn't clicking.  I often find him writing in his big, block all capital letters that he learned a few years ago but never even trying in cursive.

I guess my question is, when should I say this just isn't working and switch to manuscript?  My DH thinks we should stick with it and eventually it will take.  I feel like his not being able to write is holding him back on other subjects.  I would love some opinions.

  8. I'm with Fraidycat.  I get all of my coconut oil from Tropical Traditions.  I almost always wait for the free shipping code that happens about once a month.

We are not a coconut loving family so I typically get the expeller pressed so that it doesn't smell / taste like coconut.  I like that their expeller pressed does not use solvent extracts.

  9. Yes, yes and yes.  This is my first year homeschooling and all is going well except for social interaction.  I'm a homebody at heart.  In the midst of a crazy Michigan winter, we may only leave the house once a week.  My son thrives when he has kids his age to play with, but it is hard to find a child that we both like and also a parent that I like.  I'm not looking for a mom BFF, but I do want someone that I can interact with and has somewhat similar parenting ideas as I do.

  10. I don't have many suggestions, but have you considered feeding raw?  Our dog is sickly.  He always has been.  We got him from a market in China, and he has always had problems.  Excessive licking, extremely thin hair, random scabs, lethargic, etc...  A few months ago, we switched him to a completely raw diet.  Since then every single issue has cleared up except the licking, which has gotten better.

We are currently using a pre-mixed which is expensive.  I'm just starting to research how to mix the proper proportions to mix it up myself.

  11. Thank you!!

Also, as an ETA, my first were at the orthodontist yesterday and their Dr (Harvard trained Ortho) was going on and on about their gorgeous enamel (he's done this before) and how he never sees it and he knows it's from not giving them fluoride (when we went for the consult, it was the first thing he noticed and asked if I had them treated).

    So, stay fluoride free.

That's great of your orthodontist. Our dentist still pushes fluoride every time we go.

  12. I have been lurking forever. I never thought my first post would be on toothpaste. I have just made it my mission to switch my family to natural toothpaste without fluoride or glycerin that is safe if my youngest swallows it. Here are the ones that we currently have and what we think of them. Hopefully this will help you.

Earthpaste: Both of my kids like this. They prefer the mint over the cinnamon. It is an ugly brown color because it is made with clay, but completely safe to swallow. My husband and I like it, but there are others we like better.

Toothsoap: I got the liquid. I'm the only one that likes this. My mouth feels clean, but after I'm done I can taste soap in my mouth for a few minutes. Not my favorite, but for the price I'm going to finish it.

Uncle Henry's: Children's powder was to strong for my kids. My husband uses the adult paste and loves it. It is strong. I can practically smell his minty breath from across the room after he has brushed. I also like the paste, but dh isn't willing to share since you dip your toothbrush into the tube. The powder is ok, but I feel like I waste some trying to get it onto my brush.

Tropical Traditions: So far this is my favorite. It has the right kind of toothpaste taste and looks like tooth paste is supposed to look. I have only been using this for a few days so I'm not sure if it will stay my favorite, but for now it is the first one I reach for.

All that to say, for your kids I would get Earthpaste in mint. Cleans great. Tastes good. Some people even claim that small doses of clay is beneficial for health.
