  1. We live in SW FL and in the summer because it is very hot and sticky, we spend a great deal of time in the pool. Since our pool is saline (versus chlorine) I have no trouble with them just rinsing off afterwards. No worries about super blonde hair turning green or skin starting to look like local reptiles. :rolleyes:The beach is a different story because of the sea salt causing abrasions and questionable issues like red tide.

In the winter things are dryer and not as hot. We have a fairly busy evening schedule with Church running late on Monday and Wednesday and currently Upward Basketball on Thursdays. Tuesdays both DD 8 and DS 3 get a full wash and shampoo before bed. Thursdays DS gets shampooed but not DD (she only gets a body wash) because it is so late and her hair is so fine it takes forever to blow dry even and would never dry if left alone. DD gets a full clean on Friday mornings to freshen up after basketball the night before - especially the hair. Needless to say sheets are changed on Fridays:eek:. Basket ball games are on Saturday so full washing is always in order before bed.

I am personally a morning shower person - just helps me get started. We have begun to transition DD to a morning shower routine partly because of the late night schedules and partly because it seems to help her "get in sync" to start the school day off right as she has sensory processing dysfunction. There's nothing quite like a warm shower beating on you, a good scrub with a thick wash cloth, a rub down with a fluffy towel and a squeeze followed by hair brushing, and body brushing (for those of you who don't have an SPD kid - this is not a joke but something real and it works so well) to get the day off on a good foot. We often double up for her on days of activities (i.e. basketball on Sat etc.) and will skip hair washing in the mornings those days. Showering though is often more a part of her sensory diet rather than because of a hygiene need.

My DC (and I) insist on a clean washcloth for face, pits, feet and between the legs on those days that they don't get a bath or shower. This has been SOP in our house from day one along with undies changed at least twice (and in the case of DD when she feels the color would make her feel better or the 'feel' of the waste band or legs is getting to her because of the humidity coupled with her sensory issues).

Probable TMI, but it has been interesting to see we are not the only ones who have a varied approach to this subject!

  2. A fun and free web site that could supplement any program you choose can be found at AAA Study. It has a section on geography, as well as one on math and spelling. I think there may be a few other topics, but those are the ones I have checked out as of this writing. I just recently found it while looking up The Ron Clark Academy. It was listed on that site.

For more formal classroom type work we have used Geography Matters as well. I like the DC ROM option as it gives various level of complexity from which you can choose.

  3. We did PACE (processing and cognitive enhancement) to 'repair' an auditory analysis skill problem, followed by the companion spelling and reading program (Master the Code), Now that spelling and reading are down pat, we are branching out.

We did Handwriting Without Tears for penmanship and are now periodically working with the Stack the Deck program for sentence, paragraph and general composition creation.

I really like stack the deck as it reinforces basic grammar (and covers it well enough if you don't have a grammar program). The best part is it teaches the concept of 'sloppy copy'. In essence the student is introduced from day one to the concept that the first attempt is a draft and that all good writer will accomplish many drafts. It really takes away the fear some students have of needing to get it right the first time or feeling less that competent. It helps them do their own editing which works toward creating more independent writing.

Great, yet simple techniques are introduced to help with sentence flow, avoidance of repetitive word usage and so on. The curriculum is offered for all ages/grades. Finally, the cost is reasonable and regular English is used (as opposed to technical grammar words) with a quick mention of the formal terms.

  4. We have used Answers in Genesis and still refer to it frequently and get some of their DVDs. More recently we have been using a program created by a friend of mine. It is a creation science program by Media Angels.

Science is not a daily subject for us. I listed in my signature block only those items we touch on at least a couple of times a week, if not daily. Science, history, geography tend to come up in literature and we then take out the books for more in-depth evaluation and research. There is also nothing quite as fun as spending a day with a good encyclopedia, like Usborne or Kingfisher, especially those with the Internet access.

  5.

Glad I'm not the only one who was in the dark. I noticed today that there were no new post since mine was posted on the board. Glad I was able to get that in. I must say from reading I was under the impression that it would be a gradual turn over. I am happy that it is a total switch over as I wasn't looking forward to the back and forth.

I also hope everyone finds there way over here. I trust most will keep the same login name or at least intro themselves and let us know they have made a change.

  6. Sounds like you are home again. Funny isn't it that when you are AD for 10+ years you tend to cycle around to seeing some of the same people over again. I was AD for 10 too. I was a JAG specializing primarily in health care law, international law (LOAC and Geneva Convention stuff so I was the one who gave all the ROE briefings for those deploying) and environmental law. Occasionally I was tapped for AAI (air craft accident investigations) but was fortunate enough to always be involved in cases where there were no fatalities.

I think the museum and the aquarium are one and the same but that they changed the name. It is a great place to go. We also loved the "big food" at the MacArthur center, especially for the younger ones as it provided a safe environment to play indoors when the weather was too hot or too wet. Aside from parking costs (and you could park in areas other than the pay garage) it is free.

We loved Harborside, going to the beaches and all. The zoo has really improved over the last 8 years and is a great place to visit. It is also worthy of membership consideration for families as the cost is about what 2 visits would normally run.

We lived on Willoughby Spit since I traveled to Langley (against the traffic) and my DH was going to medical school and then residency at EVMS. Seemed to be a good location as far as commuting was concerned but not the best place once we started raising a family. DH occasionally had rotations at the VA (that's where his internship outpatient practice was) and the Navy hospital. The new Navy hospital is really quite fantastic.

Our house on the Spit looked out over the Little Bay toward the Navy Base. The first time they had an air show I was convinced we were under attack because of all the fire and flames!

We are currently in SW Florida in Ft. Myers, but one of my best friends (also a former AF JAG) lives in Jacksonville. We usually do a stop over at her place when we are on a road trip to Virginia. My kids actually like hurricanes as it usually means we pack up school and head for VA, with a stop off at Disney on the way home! We just have to check and make sure what ever weather system we are running from isn't following us up there

The last time we went we stayed with some friends of ours who just moved to a new home in Winslow and are raising alpaca. They also homeschool, so a good time is had by all. I would recommend getting in touch with her if you are interested, but they are quite a ways from HR for regular contact. Her DH was also Navy (He's a doctor like my DH) and her twins were born in Iceland while he was stationed there.

Where else have you been stationed? I was in Vegas at Nellis, Osan (in Korea), Andrews AFB (DC) and then finally at Langley.

Hope someone else gets in touch with you so you can have a local contact. I wasn't homeschooling at the time (we left when DD was 2) so I'm not sure what type of support groups may exist. I have one friend who lives near Granby who homeschools, but she is always traveling so is almost impossible to get in touch with.

    Have a great weekend.

  7. Just had to respond because my daughter was born in Norfolk, although we live in Florida now. I was AD/AF at Langley, but resigned my commission just before DD was born.

I encourage you to check out the Marine Science Museum (OK I think they have changed the name but it is the one in VA Beach). We still maintain current membership as we go back, usually once a year, and spend a vast majority of our time there when in the area. It's a super take, and better than any other I have visited.

What does your DH do? Will he be in port most of the time or will he be out to sea a lot? I know that going it alone can be tough. My DH was in medical school when we were there and after my DD was born it didn't feel much different that if he had been on remote:rolleyes:

Hope you get some local responses. Enjoy you time there.

  8. There was no mention of the forums existance on the Special Needs Board until an OT post made mention of it. I hope I wasn't off base by posting a message giving more information and encouraging others to check this out.

While transitioning over, what is the netiquette regarding double posting? I want to keep up with the boards until most everyone moves over, but want to be supportive of the forums. Do you have any recommendations on how to handle this?

    Thanks
