  1. I usually hate it when people say things like "why didn't they X or Y!" after a tragedy occurs since things cannot always be foreseen and it is too easy to judge via hindsight but I really think they ought to have been going around and I am shocked they were not. I realize we are talking about an area not much smaller than Texas but I don't know how they could not have anticipated this.

That a civilian aircraft carrying hundreds of passengers of diverse nationalities, flying at ~35,000 feet, would be shot down with a surface-to-air missile?  No, I don't agree that such an act should have been anticipated.   On the contrary, most wouldn't believe it probable, which is why the majority of airlines did use that air space.  Even when this plane was (presumably) taken down, several other aircraft were in the area, too.  There but for the grace of God, go I, you'd no doubt think upon landing & learning of the incident.  (((Shudder)))

  2. Disturbing beyond belief ~ and potentially akin to an act of war.  Reports are changing by the hour and one wonders if we'll ever really know the real story.   Re air space, the flight was going from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  We can assume that civilian aircraft between Europe & Asia commonly take that path ~ though they likely won't now (we can hope!).

Btw, BBC reports that there were 23 U.S. citizens aboard.  (Not that a U.S. citizen's life is more important than any other; just noting this in case people are wondering.)

  3. I think the stars are unnecessary and just, well, a bit odd. I have seen some threads with low star ratings and they are about the most benign topic. It's strange.

Agreed.  Initially someone rated our recent World Cup soccer thread with one star.  Ridiculous.  There's no good reason for rating threads & I wish the mods would just turn off that feature.

  4. You've never heard shut the front door?  Where have you been living, under a rock?...Have you ever watched the show Castle?

Nope, haven't heard it before.  Haven't watched or even heard of "Castle" but I only watch select sports.  Maybe that's akin to living under a rock. ;-)

I was surprised to see Merkel there.

    Oh, she's a genuine fan!

Channeling our energy into MLS now.

64,207 at tonight's Sounders game (vs. Portland).  Huzzah!

  5. Shut the front door!

Guffaw!  "Shut the front door!"  Is that akin to, "Get out of here!"?  Never heard that phrase but I'm totally co-opting it.  Right up there with Irish soccer analyst Tommy Smith's "They beat the lard out of them." ;-D

  6. What you are seeing is that the protein breaks down at high temperature processing -- so the cheap, heavily processed, heat-treated products are fine in small amounts, but fresh products that are only pasturized at the normal, moderate levels of heat are bothering her.

If you get the world's cheapest ice "cream" my daughter (with nearly the same profile) is fine with small servings. Similarly, stay away from better quality high-protein yogurts... Stick with what you have.

For milk, try uht or "shelf stable" milk (comes in juice box type containers) or make milk from powdered milk.

This is interesting, because people allergic to milk often find that they can tolerate raw milk ~ which of course isn't pasteurized at all.

  7. The uniform worn by the ladies carrying the medals tray looks like Omar Air air stewardess uniforms (beige with red beret).

Too funny ~ I also mentioned they looked like flight attendants.

Now we can pay attention to baseball again.  I only follow sports that other people mock for being boring.  Go Nats!

Haha!  I'm not really into baseball, but I do keep track of it.  I've got the Tour de France still on my radar and then I'll look forward to the NFL pre-season.  But nothing comes close to the World Cup.  Four more years….

  8. We are watching the final in Spain, at a beach town just outside of Barcelona. Messi shirts are all around town:)

And we were in the Netherlands to see the Netherlands vs. Costa Rica.

Nice!  What town are you in?  We were in Spain during the 2012 Euro ~ watched Spain beat Italy at a beach town just outside Barcelona. : )

  9. What can I say other than…DEUTSCHLAND UEBER ALLES!

When all was said and done, the best team in the tournament won.  Nice!  I'm super happy for Germany, but my happiness is tinged a bit as I really feel for Messi.  Such a phenomenal player, so fun to watch, and from all reports a very nice, humble person.  But Argentina's love-hate relationship with him undoubtedly means he'll be raked over the coals now.

And with that…it's all over.  Say it isn't so!  With the exception of two separate halves, I watched the entirety of the whole thing ~ all 64 games.  Crazy, right?!  I always love the World Cup, but this year more than ever I can say it was a much-needed diversion. Thanks to all who participated in this thread; I've enjoyed it!

  10. Woo hoo!  Bring on the final I predicted ~ Argentina vs. Germany!  (Granted, I also predicted Spain would take 3rd…!)  What an evenly played match ~ very tactical and, of course, entirely different than the other semi.

Poor Mick Jagger! He must feel like Typhoid Mary.

    Ha ha!

I do think if they weren't missing Neymar, not so much as the striker but as the captain of the team, they would have played better.

Agreed.   Among other things, they would have been thinking about, say, PLAYING THE GAME as opposed to thinking about someone who isn't there to PLAY THE GAME.  Seriously, holding up Neymar's jersey during the anthem?  Hey, I'm as sentimental as the next gal, but that right there was the first sign that they were counting on emotions as a trump card.

And a question for you, Colleen --- why the animosity towards Fred?  Not from you, but from Brazilians?

Guys like Fred and Jo represent Brazil's current conundrum.  Aside from Neymar, they don't have genuinely athletic, innovative strikers.  But yesterday, Fred was basically a scapegoat more than anything.  I can imagine how frustrated and shocked the fans were, but quite honestly, their behavior was in poor form.  Should be VERY interesting to see how things play out (no pun intended) in Saturday's third place game.

    FIFA's guidelines:

"Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM PLAY, and should not be returned to activity until they are assessed
    medically."  (caps theirs)

Well, it can be argued that he was removed (for a moment, anyway) and medically assessed.  It's difficult to determine immediately if a concussion has occurred ~ and his play for the remainder of the game seemed to be evidence to the contrary.  It's a hard call.

  11. I've had a "thing" for some of the goalies, too. Mexico's and Brazil's are pretty cute!

Julio Cesar ~ is it even fair that someone should look like that AND be a professional goalie?  Seems to be the tradition in that position.  Jens Lehmann, anyone? ;-)

  12. I also felt that given Germany was heading to the final, they were demure in their celebration...respectful of how hard this had to be for the other team. I like them for that...excellent sportsmanship!

The Germans lost in the semis when the World Cup was held in Germany in 2006, so quite a few of those guys have literally btdt.

I think I am in secret love with the Netherland's goalie! LOL

Do you mean fresh-faced Cillesen?  He looks like half the young guys in my Dutch Reformed town.  Or are you talking about Krul, who subbed in during the shoot-out?  Absolutely could.not.stand his trash talking before players took their kicks.  Totally goes against fair play rules, imo, and made me dislike the Dutch team all the more!

  13. Well, Neymar fractured a vertebra and Thiago Silva got his second yellow card (which was totally justified!!!) and had to sit out the match. The rest of the team just couldn't get their act together. I feel bad for the Brazilians because that was painful to watch. I hope there aren't any riots tonight.

Even Neymar couldn't have salvaged that game.  Silva's absence was far more significant as the defense was…well, there wasn't a defense, let's put it that way.  They went in completely riding on emotion, no plan whatsoever.  Must be said, too, that Scolari's line up was more than questionable.  Great coach, but he made some odd choices given the situation.   I actually think the public will direct most of their anger at Scolari and the bigger political machine.  The players ~ with the exception of poor Fred ~ may well be forgiven.

  14. Well, there's that, but they also just trounced the home team and chest-thumping and whooping it up would have been likely to incite some kind of riot.

Just read a comment in a response to a NY Times article, wherein the writer complained the German team was "showboating" to their fans after the game.  Couldn't disagree more!  I thought their relative lack of self-congratulation was notable ~ again, perhaps in part because they genuinely felt bad for the Brazilians.  Then, too, they were a bit annoyed with their own finish.  Oezel should have had a goal at the end there, and the defense let Neuer down when Oscar scored.

  15. Of course they had to behave nicely at the end, some of them from both teams play together on a German team the rest of the year. :D

Only in the case of Dante, I think, who plays with Bayern Munich.

  16. There are no words.  The German team's behavior at the end of the game says it all:  Any self-respecting fan or athlete was plain embarrassed for Brazil.  Klose, Mueller ~ all of them ~ honestly felt for the Brazilians.  Because seriously, how does that happen?  How does a team just not show up?  Yes, the German's are disciplined & organized & will take advantage of any weakness.  But this wasn't just weakness.  It was a complete and utter train wreck.  I don't even know how Brazil is going to summon the emotional wherewithal to play for 3rd ~ but if they play against Argentina, they sure as hell better show up or heads will roll.

  17. Bumping this thread up ~ yes, I'm still watching each game & already suffering withdrawal on off days.  I'll go into mourning on July 14.

Very disappointed in the lackluster game between France & Germany.  My team won, but they haven't shown what they're capable of in a long while.  The French started the tournament with a bang and went out with a fizzle.  Brazil had a good first half ~  attack after attack at the start of the game ~ but they simply don't look like a team capable of winning it all.  Set pieces can't get you all the way (or they shouldn't, anyway!).   Hope both Germany & Brazil kick into gear for their semifinal so we can see a great match!

Diego Forlan is back! He's not as good a player as he was, but he's still just as nice to look at.

He sure is! So is Cavani.

Forlan & Cavani were two big reasons I was an Uruguay fanatic during the 2010 cup. ;-D

    I love Colombia's little dance.

They didn't do it when James scored today!  They were running themselves ragged at the end there, playing catch up, but their inexperience overcame them.  Sorry to see them go, though.  Colombia & their fans were a lot of fun at this tournament.  I started to think they might go farther ~ actually expected them to beat Brazil today, in fact.  Just the fact that was nearly 20 years ago to the day that Escobar was killed…sort of felt like destiny.  Alas, it was not to be.

Bummed Mexico lost. I didn't watch the game (church trumps the soccer game) but I heard Mexico played well.

Omigosh, I would have been on cloud nine had Mexico had beaten Holland.  Hahaha!!!!  That would have been absolutely classic. That game just about did me in because Mexico was once again their own worst enemy.  Will they NEVER learn that going up by a goal does not mean the match is over?!!!  They completely let up and it was seriously frustrating to watch.  So no, I wouldn't really say they played well.  Ochoa played well, absolutely.  But as with the USA game, if your goalie is your primary defender, somethin' ain't right!

  18. We bought him an iPhone for US - so that he can text/call us when he is at a friend's house, or for school sports he could call us when he was back from an out of town trip and we could pick him up, or whatever...It's nice that the phone is also convenient for him, and he can use it for things he wants to use it for like talking to his girlfriend and his friends, but I am tired of paying for something that is being used repeatedly to go against our wishes. We have 5 soon to be 6 kids, we don't have money to throw around like that.

Ah, but you do have money to throw around like that.  If you didn't, your son wouldn't have an iPhone.  It's a luxury, plain and simple.  There are issues here that go beyond phone ownership & Internet usage, and those issues are being addressed in other posts.  I'm responding to but one aspect of your problem ~ namely, the fact that you're simultaneously providing your son with an unnecessary luxury even as you lament his abuse of that luxury.  For the life of me, I can't understand that behavior.

  19. Why "unfortunately" about The Netherlands?  What do you have against them?

Eh, nothing against them, but definitely nothing for them.  Maybe it's a subconscious reaction against my conservative Dutch community. ;-)

Mexico and Croatia. I'm cheering for Mexico and crushing on Ochoa big time! He is sooooo cute!

Sorta cute, but I can't get on board with that hair ~ and sadly, like most of these guys, he's young enough to be my son.  Now Niko Kovic (former Croatian player and current coach), on the the other hand, is only a couple of years my junior.  Doesn't have the emotional entertainment value of Mexico's coach, Miguel Hererra, but oh, my.  I do love to see him on the sidelines, if you kwim.

See, this is the beauty of World Cup soccer.  I know the sport & teams very well and can analyze games 'til the cows come home ~ but I can appreciate the sights along the way. :D

  20. What is up Australia?  I thought they had a good team, but they seem lack luster right now.

They did/do have a good team ~ for Australia ~ but today they were missing Tim Cahill, their one truly brilliant player.  Then, too, I think they were rather deflated, having played such a solid game against the Netherlands only to come away with a loss.

May I just say again how sorry I am to see Spain bow out so early?  It's been such fun watching these guys play together on national & club teams.  I don't want the era to end ~ but end it does.  Very emotional, seeing David Villa score his last goal for Spain and then end his career in tears on the bench.

Meanwhile, Holland rolls on, unfortunately.  Not sure what happened to Chile in the second half, but if they'd kept up the attack and pulled out a win they could've nabbed first place in Group A.

  21. You're being punished, Barb, for living in a place where it's warm enough to have a public pool. ;-)

But seriously.  It seems in so many scenarios, the acting party ~ even if it's just 1 of 100 ~ is capable of gaining "majority rule".  Smoking, mentioned above, is a perfect example (though in this country, of course, that's less often the case now).  Noise pollution is another, and imo the annoyance of it is underestimated.   The other day I was in a waiting room with several other people.  All but one of us was leafing through magazines and so on.  One woman sat there watching something on her iPhone, turned up to top volume.  On and on it went ~ and good grief, it was loud!  Seriously, I could hardly hear my son when he said something to me!  I asked the woman to decrease the volume on her phone; she did so briefly, then up it went again.  Asked her second time; same deal.  I relayed my irritation to the receptionist/office manager and she basically said, "Oh, I know?  Isn't it annoying?  But what can we do about it?"  Ummm…what can you do?  Tell her to turn off the volume on her phone, that's what!  Why are we tiptoeing around acting as if one person's desire to crank up their phone (or radio) volume trumps the next person's desire not to hear it?

    Bother.

Needless to say, in the situation you describe, I'd at least ask people to turn down the radio volume.  May not do any good ~ but you know me, I'd feel better putting it out there. *GRIN*

  22. Plus people said after the USA team won their first game, people would jump on the bandwagon.

Plus people said USA uniforms look like they're from Target...as if that's a bad thing,

Woo hoo!  I'm important enough to qualify as "people" now!  And here I thought I was just li'l ol' me. ;-)

    BlahblahblahantiUSAiansentiment with a followup blahblahblahproanyothercountrysentiment.

What channel/commentators give you that impression?
