  1. Even beyond the nostalgic feelings and the job losses we now have to pay Russia to transport our astronauts as well as astronauts from other countries. We have contracts with Europe, Japan and Canada to provide means to space so now we have to pay Russia for the astronauts from these countries to go to space as well.

It was a stupid move by a government that can't think past the end of their nose. :glare:

    :iagree:

  2. They are required by law in my state when child enters school... unless you get a relegious exemption (which isn't difficult). So, no pressure legally on little ones.

As for doctors... one pestered me & I told them I was informed with a very stern look. He dropped it. The other said "you are the Mama"... we discussed pros/cons.... I have not allowed them to take all the shots b/c so many are for convenience of work and schools.... but we delayed the life threatening ones until kids hit 3 years old. That is when they have a developed immune system. He is still our pediatrician.

  3. I walk out my door and see the MAGNIFICENCE of His work....

I breathe deeply and feel the invigoration....

I hold my toddlers hand and feel the MIRACULOUS gift of life....

Man never created anything as elaborate as a snowflake, as complex as a puppy, and as beautiful as a flower.

By the sight, sound, smell, touch, and feel of the created, I know there is a Creator.:)

  4. I don't think a nine year old can comprehend the decision. You need to think about why you choose to home school and go from there. School sounds great in books. :) Once a child is in school it becomes their norm.

:iagree: Grass is greener on the other side. Things that are different look interesting, etc. But she is too young to know the pros/cons of such a decision. I think it is an entirely adult decision.

  5. Perhaps it's because you learned how to suppress your natural curiosity in order to put your energy into following directions at school. That's how this lack of creativity usually works. But your kids aren't in that position so you don't have to foster anything - just say "yes" to them more and watch them blossom.

:iagree: Just let them explore and try things. You can introduce things by taking them places or watching something interesting... but I think most are naturally curious and love to try things.

Beatrix Potter always said school would have rubbed off some of her originality.

Schools force conformity and limit access. It has to suppress creativity. Can't wait to watch the link. :)

  6. I think privileages come with maturity and ability... not age or birth order.

Giving special privileages due to BIRTH ORDER makes me think of old England and the oldest "getting it all" :001_huh: and the other 12 kids fended for themselves. Drastic response... but that is the image the creeps into my noggin when I think of birth order having any significance. I guess it seems a bit too medieval.

  7. My niece wishes that she had not been homeschooled for elementary (she went to ps for junior and senior high). She says it was very isolating. I had to remind her that it wasn't homeschool that was isolating - it was the fact that at that time her parents were "Back to nature" hippies who lived way out in the wilderness. Sometimes people blame homeschooling when it was a combination of choices made by the parents.

:iagree: Also, many of the adults who were homeschooled were in a different era. Fewer tools available to the parents, no networks or groups for field trips & recreational activities.... it was tougher on their parents and them, I am very sure.

And like someone said about one "angry homeschooler"... they don't have kids yet and others weren't in classrooms...so they really can't compare the experience and may be enlightened if they ever have children in schools.

  8. Sounds like this would also tie in with the recent chemistry diets and blood type diets. The Blood Type things that I read were fascinating and made a great deal of sense. My family perfectly matched their issues and blood types.

I assume, for those with heritage from all over the world, that it would be more difficult.

My ancestry is English-Irish-Scot-Dutch.... haha.. not much variety there. Lots of hoofed protein, fish, and dark bread.... and maybe some ale?

    No haggis please.

  9. It usually only takes a few days and he will figure out that he needs to sleep. You can't be the pacifier... you can't comfort him all night long... you can only show him the way (even this young).

I had to do this with mine. They are all good sleepers, secure, well adapted, and I get to sleep too. So, I am a much nicer Mommy during the day.

Hang in there for a few days. It is so tough. DH may be able to help also (as someone already mentioned).

  10. I picked an "it's not enough" for the reason that I would like to pay off our mortgage, have a long weekend vacation, and buy better health insurance. Beyond those 2 issues, we are quite happy where we sit regarding lifestyle and opportunities. We drive used cars, shop at WalMart, and live in a modest home. Happy as a bug in a rug.... but would really like the mortgage stamped paid in full!

  11. :iagree:

Stephanie, have you no knowledge of apprenticeships, trade schools or out-of-the-box entrepreneurialism?

Your paradigm is shockingly simple. It isn't a matter of degrees and wealth OR $10/hr drudgery. I have a friend who is a plumber. He is building a new house, debt-free. I have a friend who is a chemical engineer and a holder of three degrees. He is driving a truck right now...and it took him two years to get that job. His wife delivers newspapers and sells garden produce.

Also, your ignorance of the thought processes of "poorer folks" is appalling. Of course we understand the "relative smallness" of loans of $5-10K/yr! That doesn't mean we can afford them! You can't get blood from a stone.

My wariness of college stems from new information made available in the past year proving that many schools are not teaching the young people properly. I am so tired of hearing about classically homeschooled children who go into debt for thousands of dollars just for the privilege of attending college classes in which they make posters about children's books. I am disgusted by reports of binge drinking and rampant cheating on campuses. This does not sound "intellectual" to me!

I'd rather have a self-educated son who is a self-made man than an impoverished, debt-riddled son who learned all manner of complacency, apathy, and immorality at an expensive college institution and yet still faces no job opportunities. (Edited to add: This is probably also be a false paradigm. However, I have personally seen more instances of these extremes than the opposite. Perhaps because I live in a mostly blue-collar town...)

That is not anti-intellectual. Farmers of America's past were better-read than lawyers of today. What is education? And what is success? These are the questions we all must answer for our own families.

    Wow... that is beautiful!

I think you help your child chose the path that fits them. I have 2 brothers.... 1 couldn't sit still in school and was NOT college material. He could have been forced but he just rolled up his sleeves and went to work. Other brother was a bit mroe bookish and wasn't very competitive. He went to school in a business field. First brother owns his own business and is doing very well. Owns 2 homes, races cars, and lives on cash most often. Youngest brother managed a small store and is now unemployed. He is in debt and miserable.

Hubby has a sister who went to tech school & cuts hair (& more of course). DH is an engineer. His sister owns her own business, barters for some tings b/c of a skill that she can share/trade.... and makes WAY, WAY more money that DH.

So, in our family.... the active, eager, energy driven siblings have blown the lid off the college degree siblings who are groveling at the table for the scraps of some boss or corporation.

Written by someone with 2 BS degrees and 1 Master's degree. All of whom would not yeild me ONE Job today. (sadly)

  12. I don't see an option for "not mistreated or abused". Maybe I misunderstood the point of the poll............Anyway, I was not abused. In general not mistreated, but of course my parents didn't always say or do the best things.

    :iagree:

We had issues but none that I ever needed outside help on or would call abuse. It wasn't all Beaver Cleaver.... but nothing to talk about as an adult.

  13. You can chose to let it die slowly and miserably or you can put it out of it's misery. My Mama used to flush them b/c she thought it was the quickest and least painful. Sound hard... but letting it starve, dehydrate and wither isn't any better.

I had to put a rabbit & a little bird out of their suffering before. I did it & then cried. But they couldn't lay there and suffer & I couldn't save them.
