  1. I switched from Singapore math to Math in Focus. I like Math in Focus so much better. The explanation and amount of practice is much better. I love the colorful books as well. Although I love the teaching methods, I have a hard time with the word problems that they assign in the book after they teach a concept. For example, they will teach a new concept and have guided practice problems. Then, the independent practice problems are based on those guided practice problems and also include many problems that take the concept to another level. I like higher level thinking word problems but I have to say even the word problems are quite a challenge for me. Does anyone have this problem? My son was getting so frustrated and started to get turned off on math. I have started skipping many of those complex word problems. Has anyone done this? What should I do? I love the books and hate to scrap this altogether but I don't know if my son will lose out too much if I take out some of those difficult word problems. What are people's thoughts on this?
  2. I live overseas and lack access to a library. I use Sonlight for my reading but the readers are not enough for my boy since he loves to read. Thankfully, I have a Kindle for him but I have had to return books a few times already since my son said they were too violent or dark. He reads very well and prefers historical fiction books. Any book under 200 pages is usually too short for him. Does anyone have any recommendations for books that are on Kindle that would be good for my son? He is in the fourth grade.
  3. Thanks for the advice. I feel ignorant but what is WWE and SWT? I am new to these forums.
  4. I forgot to say I also want to challenge my kids besides just simply reading the books and answering a couple questions per chapter. Any other ideas for activities or questions, anyone?
  5. I forgot to say that I have a fourth grade boy and a 2nd grade girl. They could read all day but I realized recently that their comprehension and writing are not always so good. I want them to comprehend what they are reading. I used to be able to read all their readers with them but now they both have longer books to read and I can't do that all the time.
  6. I really like the books from Sonlight but I am very disappointed in the reading comprehension questions. They lack depth and often don't really get to the main point of the chapters. Anyone find any solution to this problem besides just scrapping Sonlight? Are there any websites that have good questions for the books. I don't want to rewrite all the questions!
