  1. I've always heard baking soda & water, but the coke sounds interesting. It might be toast.

Interesting thing was I took dh's watch to get a new battery & that was leaking inside the watch! The jewler said he hadn't seen that for probably 15 yrs--then in this past year he's seen probably 20. Luckily the watch still worked. Good luck with it!

  2. I started with spelling workout, but then on the recommendation of another mom, started sequential spelling. This is working out well for us. If you haven't --you should really look at the book. It makes sense! I saw a demo of another spelling program & it looked too complex for me & dd doesn't have a difficult time with spelling. That spelling city site looks good :)

  3. My daughter is a senior and has only gone on one college visit. She's having a hard time figuring out where she even wants to visit! We live in Indiana and she's dead set against going to college in this state! We've only lived here 4 yrs - were in Michigan for the rest of our lives. Both her parents graduated from Michigan and she's wanted to go there since she was 7 but the out of state tuition is out of this world! I guess I'm just writing to say I understand how difficult it is to figure out the colleges to visit.

I say just brainstorm with them & visit a few.

    Not much help.

  4. When I first started homeschooling last year, I felt quite inadequate. I started by going to a used curriculum stores & the lady there walked me thru my first curriculum choices and pointed me to the state standards as used by the public schools. I was frustrated because I'd gone to a meeting hosted by our local home school group and they didn't want to direct me towards that site. I googled state standards for IL & came up with this site: http://www.isbe.state.il.us/ils/

If you click around you should be able to find the standards for each grade & subject. I was able to find it for Indiana & the h.s. curric store had hard copies of this info as well.

    Good luck. Paula

  5. I agree with the above. Knit a scarf...just do an easy pattern. Then if you want to knit a sweater, start with a top down raglan. Elizabeth Zimmerman's books are good at explaining the proportions--check to see if you can get them from the library. Start with something pretty basic & keep charts/sticky notes to tell which row you're on. Keep counting each row to make sure you're not forgetting your increases/decreases. Sounds stupid, but I get a lot of interruptions & frustrations with my knitting & sometimes when I don't keep my notes--that's when I screw up!

    Good luck.

  6. We've been thru 3 routers in the last year & 1/2--we had a trendnet that lasted just over a year, a D-Link that lasted about a week, and a Belkin that's still going. We thought there was a problem with our isp & the technician came out & told us it was our router. I ordered the dlink from tigerdirect.com & was so frustrated that it died so quickly. The tech said Linksys or something...we went to best buy & got the Belkin as it was on sale & the salesdude said it was a better router than the Linksys we were looking at.

there are different letters "g", "N", and something else. The letters have to do with how old your computer is or something...G is the most general, N is newer technology & then there's the other that's directed more at I think business. I say go talk to someone...ie best buy or someplace & have them sort of explain it to you. On line reviews can be good/bad as with everything...best buy was nice as if we had a problem we could return it within 30 days. Tiger direct's return policy was great too...they just don't want to waste time on the phone talking to you.

good luck..we set it up...it was pretty easy...we didn't even put the software on the computer from the belkin...xp runs it all fine.

  7. I used to be a strap hinge snob. Then with 3 kids I decided I needed way too many albums. I used the 40% off coupons to purchase most of my albums so I got whatever was on sale. Sad thing is that I've barely scrapped in like 4 yrs! I need to finish senior dd's school book so she'll at least have her school photos in an album. I hs my 8 yr old & my older 2 go to catholic h.s.

Back to albums--either works--look at them both for yourself & the price differences & see which makes more sense for you.

  8. Thanks Karen: She's a senior this year and so she would have received notification last year if her psat score was high enough. My friend just brought this whole topic up this weekend & she couldn't find her psat score.

according to a usa today article, she'd need to be over 207 for Indiana--where we live. I've advised her to talk to the counselor's office tomorrow...she's in catholic h.s. I'm hs'ing my 8 yr old dd & have 2 in h.s.

    confusing, eh?

    thanks for all your help!

  9. Stupid question but did they mail you these packets for sophmores, juniors, or seniors? I was talking to my friend about it and he advised me to check into it for dd. What scores are necessary. The website I found was confusing...said it depends on what score was achieved on the PSAT, taken as a (sophmore?)

My kids took the psat soph & jr years. Now I'm wondering if I should have her take the SAT again to see if she can get a better score? My friend said colleges take the highest of each section regardless of when the test is taken.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  10. All these acronyms! So mfw is my father's world...they'll sell you 4 books for $45 plus the daily lesson plans. If you go to the singapore site, you can buy the workbooks & texts for $9 each...no lesson plans...but are the daily lesson plans worth $6? (okay-maybe?). I like to have the answer keys for quicker checking sometimes. You lose this with mfw...correct. I guess I don't really see too much of a benefit?

Also...is the cd rom really that good for getting the multiplication tables down. We're still finishing 2B at the start of 3rd grade...we're about 3/4 of the way thru...We'll have to double up on lessons to get thru it!!! In my defense...we started on singapore a couple monthes into the second grade year :001_huh:

  11. Half the time it turns into a 4 day week because we go to gym one day a week...now there's going to be art & science for a couple weeks --this is all at the local college...

This is also our library day as it's all in the same little town...we're 7 miles from the walmart in the country so we try to maximize our time there.

We get behind with the math sometimes & have very long days. I need to change this.

  12. I knew immediately that Horizons for second grade wouldn't work for my daugher when she kept saying, "I just did this". There was too much review in it for her. We switched to Singapore & she's challenged. I augment with a few other things, but not every program works for each child. I'm leary of apologia...sad to say...I'd investigate other curriculums. We found a Scott Forester book for Science that dd enjoys.

  13. We're in the third grade year of Growing with Grammar. My dd went to catholic school first grade and liked the workbook format. She doesn't complain, but we'll be through with the third grade book shortly (she's currently in 3rd -- we started it last year). I've been happy with it. I wish I could "see" the other programs. I'm thinking of grammar island next. I'll call them & explain where she's at--then have them recommend a level.

  14. I know some clinics are frustrating. My husband had a similar experience with a PA with his diabetes...then we found out our insurance doesn't cover PA's at ALL...so we had to pay $115. of which would have otherwise been cut down to like $65 by blue cross had it been an allowable expense. (and they'd have paid 80% since our deductible was met!). The PA told him to take 20 units of insulin & he woke up in the middle of the night with a blood sugar of like 40! Felt all crappy & stuff...had a bunch of stuff to increase his blood sugar. scary. Called their office & they said to take 18 units...duh...that's still too much! I'm leary of PA's after this experience.

I also had a thyroid disaster when I went to a holistic dr...a DO...that did $300 in blood work, prescribed armour thryoid...I was jittery & my blood pressure & pulse were up(was at the gastroentereologist & they confirmed it)...and the holistic doc said "take half a pill". Now that's scientific! I went back to the generic syntharoid & cancelled the next $135 blue cross allowable charge to the holistic doc. That doc was just too expensive! I'm frustrated with drs & trying to stay away. The gastro wanted to do a colonoscopy ... based on anemia blood results from the holistic doc...the fam dr agreed I'm not anemic...grrrr...frustrating.

Hope you get it straightened out.

  15. I really want to get active with a co-op, but the group in the town closest to me has no official co-op...just a mom that teaches some classes in her home but she's very picky about who she lets in...brothers & sisters of current members, etc. I went to a gym at another town and might get active with that group even though it's 40 minutes away vs. 10-15. In the local town, everyone is related to each other (and we're not--no joke here). the other town...the ladies were WAAAAy more friendly and inviting!

I answered "other". because I gave the local yokal's money, but they're not doing anything for me except send me emails of their basketball schedule...which we have zero interest in. (they like basketball in indiana)
