  1. Hi,  Anyone here applied to UTD in recent years?  How important are the optional recommendation letters?  Is it silly to send in my Counselor Recommendation letter for the Common App to UTD w/out additional teachers recs?  She has good GPA, SAT and good number of APs.  She also has written her optional essay and a few DE.  If she doesn't send in teacher recs would it affect her scholarship amount?  Thank you in advance for any info.

  2. The textbook DD's CTY teacher recommended is Campbell Biology.

It may just be DD's teacher, but I wouldn't recommend CTY AP Bio.  Also, I believe from now on CTY requires outside proctors for tests.  Don't really have an alternate class to recommend; not much out there and that's how we ended up doing CTY.   The Thinkwell biology teacher is good.  DD enjoyed the videos (though long and many).

  3. There was a recent post about giving PE pass/fail and many replied that colleges would weigh that as a C in the weighted GPA.  Is this true for all colleges and for all classes?

DD's flute teacher suggested that she switch her lessons from his private studio to the CC he teaches at.  The course would be Pass/Fail.  She doesn't really need the credit it's just cheaper and more experience for her playing in front of CC judges...etc.  The new CC flute course would show up on her CC transcript (since she's planning to take other courses there).  We were planning on doing this but now we are not sure.

Does anyone know the policy for pass/fail classes and how they affect GPA?

  4. I noticed that you said T. took a preChem class.  Do you feel T. would not have been properly prepared for the Chem class this year if she did not take the preChem?  My dd is taking HS Bio this year.  She's had a middle school level physical science (Rainbow and Plato) before that.  I'm wondering if that will be enough.

  5. Does anyone have any experience with Landry Academy's Online High School Chemistry class?   I noticed that the two teachers have different syllabi.  One listed 12 labs while the other listed 8 labs.  Any experience with either Mrs. Prieskorn or Mr. Leingang?

Also, I know that they use Spectrum Chemistry.  From reading this forum, it seems that the labs for Spectrum Chemistry are important yet Landry uses different labs.  Are the Landry labs less rigorous?

Has anyone taken Landry Chemistry and done well in an AP Chem course afterwards?

    Thank you!
