I'm pretty sure I want to get an iPad. Is there any real reason I would want the iPad 2 over the iPad, if money were a sticking point?
-
Maybe this should go in the "confessions" thread from yesterday! Today is 4/14 and I haven't even gotten all of our paperwork together yet. I know I have until the 18th this year, but I've never been this late before! Fortunately ours aren't that difficult but it still takes time that I don't have this year. I guess it will be a day of cartoon-watching for the kids!
Don't feel bad; sis and I usually get ours done by early Feb, and I just finished mine yesterday, and she's still working on hers! I spent last week replacing paperwork that I had lost. I've never been this scatterbrained or late before.
Don't worry -- you'll get it done. Just wanted you to know you aren't alone!;)

I'd err on the safe side and throw them out (then cry, because I know how much work canning is, and how wonderful it is to have canned fruit!).

Thanks for the input. Is there a reason to choose the iPad 2 over the iPad -- or vice versa?

I've got a Kindle, and really like it. When ds and I went to pick up a new power cord for our laptop, I took a look at the Ipad 2 and was really impressed. I'm thinking of getting it, but I'm wondering if you might help me find what's available for what I want:
1. A fairly large screen; the 2 or 3 inch ipods just don't work for my old eyes!
2. Small, portable and light-weight.
3. e-reader friendly so I can still use my Kindle account
4. Able to use as a day planner
5. Able to let me listen to Pandora
6. Able to use for email and basic web-browsing (no gaming)
7. Gentle on the pocketbook; I'd rather keep it below $400
8. Able to use a stylus, as I have a hard time with small keyboards/texting
Does such a thing exist?
Thanks!

I'd love to say it's "baby weight" but my little sweetie is almost 9 weeks old now and truth be told it was here before she was. Lingering from a child or two ago. :nopity:I know. I know.
Anywho, I'm thinking it'd be nice to try and lose a bit of the bulge. . .so the plan, the very doable plan, is to drop forty by fall! That's a little over 5 months to work with - who's with me??
Anyone else want to embark on this challenge? :D
Fall will arrive on time either way!
When I complain of being fat, dh lovingly says, "You aren't fat -- you're ex-babyful!" I love him!!:001_smile: Problem is, "baby" is turning 16 in August!:D
I'm in! I joined WW a few weeks ago -- I'm not losing much, but I know that would improve if I would just follow the plan!:tongue_smilie: Sis and I are trying P90X three times a week (notice the word 'trying'), and I do Tae Kwon Do three times a week. My muscles are strong, and my endurance and flexibility are pretty good, but I'd like to get rid of that flexible middle!:glare:
As for weight, let's just say I will be happy to see that "1" as the first number.

A different take:
I read it aloud to 15yo ds; we didn't "study" it, but read it purely for our enjoyment. (And yes, though it wasn't his favorite, ds did like it.)

Short stories by Jack London
Thornton Wilder The Bridge of San Luis Rey, The 8th Day
John Steinbeck Grapes of Wrath (if you think it's too heavy, try Of Mice and Men)
Oscar Wilde The Canterville Ghost, Importance of being Earnest
For poetry, try some Tennyson and Robert Frost
Good suggestions. We read Call of The Wild and White Fang earlier this year and enjoyed them!

My plans are for ds to read 12-14 books over 2 semesters (evenly split between American and British lit)), along with some short stories and poetry for each. He is not the reader that his older siblings are -- not that he can't understand, just that he doesn't enjoy classics unless read aloud, and even then, they are far from his favorites. These are some I'm thinking of:
American
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Old Man and the Sea
Adventures of Tom Sawyer
British
Frankenstein
The Time Machine
The Moonstone
A Tale of Two Cities
Animal Farm
Any suggestions for books that are interesting yet challenging, but not too hard and heavy?

Still going along slowly, but I did finish Nurse! Nurse! by Jimmy Frazier. That was a good book, but I am REALLY sick of good stories that have to include filthy language!!!
Still working slowly on Robinson Crusoe, and I'll start something new for me -- don't know what, yet.
21. Nurse! Nurse! (Frazier)
20. Usborne True Sea Stories
19. Usborne True Stories: Crime and Detection
18. You Want Me to Declaw WHAT?! (Toia)
17. Before My Heart Stops (Cardall)
16. The Deadly Dinner Party (Edlow)
15. Across the Red Line (Karl)

I'm so, so sorry! We had to put our dog to sleep last month. They become such an important part of the family.:grouphug:

Taming of the shrew
My favorite! I love the costumes and scenery (and I really Shakespeare).

A beautiful woman gone; RIP. I loved her and Richard Burton in Taming of the Shrew.
She was one of those lovely women that kept her good looks with age -- along with Maureen O'Hara and Olivia de Havilland.

I read "The Serotonin Diet" and wasn't hugely impressed. But I wasn't the target audience so I don't suppose it matters. :p Since then, I've been reading about children and music lessons. I want to take clavichord lessons but the cheapest ones are three grand and lessons are about $65 per hour so it's gone onto my list as a retirement project...
Rosie
How cool! The family I lived with during college had a clavichord and harpsichord that they had built -- boy, did I enjoy playing them. (The clavichord was MUCH kinder sounding during the middle of the night! :D )
I didn't finish any books this past week. I'm still working on Robinson Crusoe as a read-aloud, and Nurse! Nurse! and True Desert Adventures.

This was a week of light reading: #19: Usborne True Stories: Crime and Detection and #20: Usborne True Sea Stories. They were both interesting reads. We're still working on Robinson Crusoe; it's a difficult book to read aloud, and it doesn't have chapters. We really like it, though.
What for this week? Good question!;)

I finished Before My Heart Stops (Cardall) and You Want Me to Declaw WHAT?! (Toia). Ds and I are reading Robinson Crusoe together. I still haven't figured what I'll read this week, but since I have quite a few started, I should be able to finish at least one.

I play the lever harp, and this is my large, favorite one: a Thormahlen Swan, made of Koa wood. I love the looks and the sound.:)

I finished The Deadly Dinner Party. I'm working on Before My Heart Stops, and will likely have another one going.
I just want to say that I really like it when posters give a list of the books they have read so far. I know I can look back on each of the older threads, but having them in one place is great for finding new books to read.
Here's what I've read so far:
16. The Deadly Dinner Party (Edlow)
15. Across the Red Line (Karl)
14. All My Patients Have Tales (Wells)
13. Ten Days in a Madhouse (Bly)
12. Heaven is For Real (Burpo)

I'm slow replying this week.
Last week I finished Heaven Is For Real, Ten Days in a Madhouse, and All My Patients Have Tales.
This week I've finished Across the Red Line, and I'm working on The Deadly Dinner Party.
-
My old eyes aren't what they used to be. I'm looking for a large (on the floor) magnifier that has a light -- any suggestions?
-
That was great!

We finished Silas Marner as a read-aloud. While ds didn't enjoy it as much (it isn't adventure like White Fang and Call of the Wild), he did like it. I had never read it, so it was a treat for me.
I finished Doctor of the Heart.
This week, I'm reading Heaven is for Real; I haven't decided yet what ds and I will read together.
List so far:
1 -- Tales of An African Vet
2 -- Hunger Games
3 -- Catching Fire
4 -- Mockingjay
5 -- Rogue Wave
6 -- The 7
7 -- Call of the Wild
8 -- Ask the Animals
9 -- White Fang
10 - Doctor of the Heart
11 - Silas Marner
Couch-to-5K question
in General Education Discussion Board
Posted
My sister has challenged me to do a 5K run with her June 4. Since the Couch-to-5K program trains for 9 weeks, 3xday, is there a safe way to accelerate it so that I'd be ready by then?
As for current physical condition: I'm going to test for my black stripe next month for Tae Kwon Do, and Sis and I have been doing a modified (read: VERY slow and modified!;)) P90X 3xweek for about 6 or 7 weeks. I'm also overweight.
Thanks.
