Shari,
You will get some info here, but you might get more if you post these questions on the yahoo group dedicated to bju distance learning. Here is the link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BJU_Distance_Learning_Online/

I use tools that are available on the Donna Young website. She already has a number of tools set up that use Excel. Here is a link to one of the things I use http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/g-a-pages/all-g-a-files.htm

I used this with my two this past year. The amount of time various depending upon the assignment. I usually discussed with them on Tuesday and they worked on the assignment until the following Tuesday. There were some weeks when the discussion took an hour, but usually it was more like 30-40 minutes. The homework really depended upon the assignment; worksheet from the syllabus or working on an essay, it just really depended.
However I highly recommend it, especially if using Jill Pike's syllabus from the website. Best $5 I have every spent :)

Luann:
I researched different textbooks and for the Agribusiness ended up with this one -- http://www.cengage.com/search/productOverview.do?Ntt=203294281514688077941329849049855080862&N=15+4294922413+4294922373+4294961718&Ntk=P_EPI You can look at all their high school textbooks at this link -- http://cengagesites.com/academic/?site=4373&SecID=628
For the commodities side of things I found a Commodity Training Manual that was originally put together for high school ag programs and was made available by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for anyone who wanted to learn about commodity marketing. Here is that link -- http://gpvec.unl.edu/files/Futures/CME%201%20Commodity%20Trading%20Manual.pdf
I am also researching some commodity trading games for him to do.

My two did the BJU textbook w/DVD at home and a lab class at coop where the textbook was Apologia. They used the Apologia textbook for prelab and in class. The teacher at the coop has written a very complete lab manual that goes with the lab class.
They handled the two books just fine.
We could have done the labs at home, however, the University of Nebraska will not recognize homeschool science labs, but this class has been approved by them. I don't know where these two kids will attend college, but if they chose the university their science lab will not be questioned.

Depends on the child and what they have done. My oldest has done TOG and she has done ALL of the literature and all of the papers. In addition she has worked on other compositions, grammar studies and vocabulary studies with other texts. I have no problem at all awarding her two credits.
The other two have not done the amount of literature that she has done so I will probably combine their credits. However in comparison to their cousins at the local public school they have done at least twice as much;)

The student text is sufficient for instruction, but without the TM you will not have the answers to the chapter summaries and assessments. There are also questions that are asked throughout the chapter that are answered in the TM along with additional information.

I have used both and while they both have their strong points, I feel that BJU is the more challenging of the two. I found the map portion of Glencoe a little on the weak side and supplemented with other things. I used more than just the textbook for Glencoe. I found a number of resources that went with the textbook; resource book for each unit, quizzes and tests, geography literacy resources, and a DVD that has a segment on it to introduce each unit.

We once left a church and one of the issues was the music. It didn't bother my dh so much, but it gave me a headache. My in-laws still attend said church, but it is not uncommon for them to skip the music portion all together and just go for the sermon. There are just some styles of music that some people like and others don't. However, it doesn't make one group more spiritual or less spiritual than others.
We have also heard church leadership say that they are changing direction and that not everyone will like the new direction and that is fine. Some will leave and others will come. Sometimes we forget that the church is filled with sinful people and that this side of eternity it will never be perfect :)

I do not go to any of the local home school conferences, and they are only 20 minutes away! I definitely would not fly to Europe and spend my time sitting in a conference.

There is a syllabus on the IEW website that turns Windows to the World into a full literature course. I have used it with two of my kids this year and have been very pleased. Best $5 I have ever spent! http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/sla-e

There are used copies on some of the used book sites, but they are more expensive then just buying new from the publisher. I know I bought my copy direct from the publisher. I had to set up an account and verify that I was indeed a homeschooling parent, but after that I didn't have any problems buying from Pearson.

That does not look like the correct book.
The isbn # should be 0201861003 and the book is dark blue. Here is the page from Pearson -- http://pearsonschool.com/index.cfm?locator=PSZu6e&PMDBSUBCATEGORYID=&PMDBSITEID=2781&PMDBSUBSOLUTIONID=&PMDBSOLUTIONID=6724&PMDBSUBJECTAREAID=&PMDBCATEGORYID=806&PMDbProgramID=21022 The solutions manual is the last one listed, no picture though.

Can you answer a couple of questions for me about his classes? (interested in precalculus)
I understand that homework and tests are sent to him and he grades it. Is that correct? How quickly does he get work back to the student?
Do you have a solutions manual to give help, if needed, or do you not have a solutions manual? If you don't have a solutions manual has that been a problem with helping your student?
How responsive is he to questions about homework problems?
Is the student required to correct any problems (homework/tests) that are incorrect?
Thanks for any information.

We didn't use the labs. I just used it as a supplement to what we were doing.

Here is a number and an email address -- Teachers should call GPB Education at 1.888.501.8960 or email classroom@gpb.org with questions or to request teacher materials.
If I recall correctly I had to purchase one of the DVDs from Amazon and then I emailed the invoice to GPB and they sent me the CD with the teacher materials.

You could start where you are at. There is no set time you have to watch each day -- you just sign into your account and click on the lesson you wish to watch.

I have heard rumors that the physics class is being redone with Mr. Harmon. Hopefully when their new catalog comes out the DLO/DVD physics class will have been redone with the new textbook and a new instructor.

Foreign language having to be taught at accredited school?
in High School and Self-Education Board
Posted
Depends on the college.
The University of NE will not accept a foreign language class taught at home. They will accept a Spanish course that is taught at the local homeschool coop, but it has been preapproved by the University and is taught by a former professor at the University. They will not accept anything like Rosetta Stone, BJU, Abeka, etc. if it has been taught at home. They require classroom instruction for a foreign language. (Also have the same requirement for a lab science.)
