  1. LoriM.....I sent your post onto the NCHE office (regarding the conference call saying not to allow any homeschoolers to take classes other then math, science) Here is the response back: As I said, it is up to each CC to decide so if one does offer the humanities on campus, the others do not. Here is the response I received from the Raleigh office. ================================================================================================== Mr. Lewis, That is absolutely not the case. The General Assembly was very clear that local colleges have the discretion to offer these general education courses to dual enrollment and Huskins students, and if they choose to do so, may charge an amount sufficient to cover the cost of these courses. I don't know where colleges would have gotten the impression that the System Office told them not to offer these courses. We have not, nor would not, issue those types of instructions against the direction of the legislature. It is a local college decision. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. 2. I have version 2 and in the teacher book I only see a sample of a lesson plan for one week. I was hoping to find something for the whole year. I did just find a Edu- Track Plan you can by for $1.99 You can see a sample and it looks good, but not sure if you need the Edu Track program to run it? Need to look at it more when I have time! 3. Is there such a thing as a year worth of Rosetta Stone lesson plans? For instance....Day One: Work on DVD for lesson 1 for 20 min., Do worksheet #___, Read lesson book page #___? I am looking for something that I can transfer to a teacher planner.
  4. Our plan was to do this at the community college....but if you have followed the NC dual enrollment issues ......well it is looking like this option is being taken away from us. We also live 45 min. to the closest CC....on very windy mountain roads!
  5. I just emailed the woman at our local CC that is over the dual enrollment students and asked if she had any new info...here is her reply: Not sure...still waiting on clarification of the legislation. Have been told that by Monday specific info will be coming down!!! We are hearing many different reports across the state which makes this subject very hard to report on! Georgia..thank you for your gracious comments! While no orginization is perfect, I have been on the NCHE board for over 6 years and have never met a more dedicated group of people with a passion to help other homeschoolers. 6. Georgia, I am a Regional Director for NCHE and will say that I have tried my best to only forward current and correct information to my region (#1) This is difficult with the amount of information from so many different sources out there and a situation that seems to be changing by the minute! I would like to say that ALL board members of NCHE are volunteers and only do this as we want to serve the homeschoolers in NC. I am sorry if you feel we have given you bad information in anyway.
  7. Last year, my 10th grade daughter took Spanish through a homeschool co-op. The teacher used Abeka High School Spanish 1. Well....just found out that the co-op classes will not be offered this year! :( I have been looking over the Abeka program and it does not look user friendly for someone like me with little Spanish background. But trying to switch to another program will be difficult unless we start all over as they all teach different vocabulary, etc My daughter seems very discouraged at the thought of having to start over again in a different program. Abeka does offer a DVD course that I have looked at but it is $400! Anyway...would love any suggestions. Have any of you used Abeka? Thanks for ANY help!
  8. Hi Susan...we are also just back from NC convention....it was GREAT. We switched to TT for Algebra 2 after using MUS since pre Algebra. My husband teaches math and made the decision to switch. He liked that they would get instant feedback on missed problems....instead of having to wait until the next day when he has time to sit down with them. So part of it was that it was more self teaching.....but also....my girls math scores have gone down each year for the past 3 years on IOWA testing.....so we just decided it was time to try something else. TT looks challenging and has more review. We'll see!
  9. Hi, I am actually not new to this board but it has been awhile since I posted and the site didn't recognize me! :( Anyway....my twin girls are finishing 9th grade....we have used a lot of Sonlight and WTM for reading and they both absolutely LOVE, LOVE to read and still love for me to read aloud to them......on their IOWA's they scored in the 90th percentile on reading comprehension but in the 60th for vocabulary. This just concerned me that I needed to do a little more then just have them read! I feel like we need a "plan" to work through. We have not done Latin for many years and that is a good suggestion.....we will not have time to do a full Latin course but I think I remember seeing some workbooks that will take you through the Latin roots?? I will also look at the Wordly Wise and Voc. for College students. Any other things you all like?
  10. I just got my girls IOWA test scores back and they both scored high on reading comprehension but low on vocabulary. I know how important the vocabulary is for SATs....can any of you recommend what you are using to improve vocabulary. This past year I had them going through the Vocabulary Cartoons book but feel we might need something with a little more work to it to help them retain the words. Thanks for any advice.
