  1. I'm kind of interested in trying MM out for next year. We're doing MUS Primer right now, and I'm sure we'll finish it by fall. We still like MUS, but she really likes math and there are certain concepts that she's interested in that will come later in MUS. So call me a glutton for punishment, but I'm thinking about supplementing MUS with MM, or vice versa and using MUS as th supplement. MM 1st doesn't look like it'll be TOO hard for her next year. I'm kind of interested to know whether others have used it for K?

Just a note, I'm not 100% set on using MM. I've also thought about using Saxon or A Beka for additional math.

  2. Sonlight has a small sample of 3 different handwriting curriculums, and IMO A Reason for Handwriting has the better looking cursive of the 3. Here are the samples. http://www.sonlight.com/handwriting.html

I know that ultimately it doesn't matter so much on which curriculum looks better, but which one agrees with your child more. But ARFH looks more like the way I write, so I think I'm going to try that first...when we get to it. We're going to use ARFH for manuscript b/c I think the manuscript looks better too. LOL!

  3. I think it's really funny that I had never heard of this guy before today, and someone was just recommending "Telling God's Story." Since it's published by Peace Hill Press, I was expecting it to be written by SWB, but it's written by Peter Enns. Then I come on here and there's a thread about him, right on the first page of threads.

  4. Why do people think this? I hear it all the time. "I can't teach my kids. They don't listen to me." YOU'RE THE PARENT! I get that kids might be too confortable with a parent, but that can easily be overcome. So DD is five and a half and she's not reading. My aunt was acting like DD should be reading by now, even though we're not doing kindergarten curriculum. I told her that DD's just not ready yet. We've tried, but she doesn't grasp how to put sounds together. And then my aunt said, "It's probably b/c you're her parent. She'd probably know it by now if she was in school." :glare: She's not even old enough to be in public K, so the only school she'd be in would be a preschool program.

  5. We were replacing our ink cartridges about every 2 months. It was cheaper to buy the black and color cartridges togeter for $30 something. Urm, that's still not cheap. I puchased an ink refill kit off of Amazon for about $15. Refilling them worked for us! And each ink bottle has so much ink in them. They'll probably last at least a year. I hear you can't refill the cartridges more than a couple times before they become "ruined." So we'll probably replace them after refilling each 2 or 3 times. So instead of replacing once every 2 months we'll be replacing every 6 to 8 months.

  6. As for the fundraising, the troop that I contacted hasn't decided what they will do next year. The leader said that this year was the troop's first, and they had two fundraisers. They might give the parents the option to pay a little bit more to not participate in fundraisers. We'd probably pay the extra b/c I HATE asking people to buy stuff. And we'd probably end up purchasing something from those fundraisers too, and have only a small portion help the troop.

  7. I do not know of such a thing, but do you know that CC Cycle one is not just Ancient History? It covers a general World History with some Ancient and I think it goes up to a little bit of the 1800's. I'm not too thrilled with it b/c I'd rather CC devote a year to Ancient History, but we'll still do CC b/c we like the community. The History cards help with filling in the History holes, though.

  8. I have Volumes 1 through 3 and am putting off putting them on the Swap board. If you want them, pm me. $20 ppd each. Or maybe we can agree on a bit less if you want all of them. I also have BFIAR.

I really appreciate your offer. :) I've actually had a couple people offer their volume 1. If I decide to get Volume 3, I'll let you know. Thank you!

  9. What the junk? A new copy only costs $35 on Rainbow Resource Center. The price isn't bad, but I was looking at used copies on amazon and ebay that were running about $20 plus $4 in shipping. I was going to go that route, but I waited. Now the lowest I can find used is on ebay for $36.91 plus $3.50 in shipping. Yeah right! Like I'm going to pay more for a used copy! Why would the price fluctuate like that? Do you think it'll go back down? If not then I'll just buy it new. Even with shipping costs from RRC it's still cheaper, especially if I buy something else with it.

  10. You all make it sound so wonderful. I'm so excited. My concern about 3 times a month being too much was b/c we already do soccer, 4H, and church on Wed. night, so joining AHG would make us quite busy some weeks. But it sounds like it might be worth it. We might end up dropping 4H for now anyway, b/c they just play right now.

  11. All I can think is that we'll see people walking into things more often. I just can't imagine how you can focus both on what pops up and where you're going. Oh, and you know how rude people look when they're texting or doing something else on their phone while you're trying to have a conversations with them? Well, now people can be discreetly rude.

  12. Thank you! I totally plan to go and visit for a meeting or activity. DD can't join until August or September, since she has a late birthday. I think I'm going to wait to check it out until she can almost join. I'd hate for her to get excited and ask to come back, only to have to wait 5 to 6 months before she can come back. :)

  13. I just found out about AHG about a week ago, and I requested more information. It looks like it's a Christian/conservative version of Girl Scouts. That appeals to my husband and I. I've wanted to sign DD up for the scouts, but I wasn't totally on board with Girl Scouts, but I was willing to sign DD up for GS's before finding out about AHG's. I was in GS's when I was a girl, so I thought it'd be great to sign my own daughters up for GS's. My main reason for not being on board with GS's is b/c of some of their more liberal ideals. Now that I've heard about AHG's, I think I'm more interested in signing her up for them.

I was hoping that some of you might have experience with AHG's. Have you had positive/negative experiences? Also, I found out that they meet 3 times a month. They meet on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Monday of the month. That seems like a lot of commitment. Just out of curiosity, I wonder if Girl Scouts meet that often. I was also wondering what their badges are like?

    Thanks a bunch!

  14. I don't dislike Abeka, but it's not my favorite curriculum. I was really thinking about doing Abeka until I became familiar with more options. I used to teach at a private school and we used Abeka and most of the kids did well with it. But there's a lot of busy work. Abeka is written more for a classroom setting, and seatwork is needed in a classroom. It's intended for kids to work on while other kids are meeting in reading groups. Abeka doesn't make that clear and I see many homeschoolers get Abeka and complain about how much work it is. It really is a lot! Even in the younger grades. But seatwork can be left out, IMO.

I agree with most of what has already been mentioned, but I might also add that most of Abeka is consumable, so you can't use it year after year. The curriculum itself is reusable, and so are most of the reading books, but anything else is meant to be written in. At least in the younger grades. I only taught K-2, so I don't know how the textbooks work over 2nd.

  15. I have a friend who makes these dolls, and she posts the pictures on facebook. I think it's weird. I just don't get it. I think she posts them on facebook for advertisement purposes, but here lately she's been posting pictures of the babies with their outfits unbuttoned all the way down the front so you can see their genitalia. WHY?!?! To show how realistic their genitalia look???? Who cares? Even if I wanted to buy one, why would I care that their genitals look real? Diapers and clothing will be covering it up!
