Hello,
I am looking for something like this. Can you please post the isbn and the author, edition of the book? I like to take a peak at it to see if it will work for us too.
Thanks

I'm curious about your experience with Joy Hakim's A History of US. Specifically:
- For what age/grade level student did you use it? How did that go? It is for middle school and highschool level. There are 2 study guides available one for middle grades and highschool grades. Sonlight use to use it for middle grades, but have switched it over for use in their Highschool american history curricula.
- For what grade do you feel it is most appropriate? (i.e. not the earliest possible stage to use it, but the stage at which you feel a student would get the most out of it?) IMHO either. I think a student perceives the material different depending on age. For example the perception of an 8th grader is different than of a 12 grader. Though I would add more than just the text int he highsr grades. I work off of it or use to work of of a spine. There are 10 books to the set, it would be alot of reading if this set was used as the supplement.
- What is the latest it would be useful (i.e. is it usable by high school students? or too easy?) It all depends on what you would supplement with, it just depends what hte focus would be doing it in higshcool oppose to middle school. I would consider looking at sonlight since they use it as the spine, and possibly not using all the readers if you believe they require too much reading.
- Do you prefer a different US history text? If so what, and for what age/grades? I am still trying to figure it out myself. It depends if your students likes story format or if he or she prefers text. One of my ds prefer text, which in that case I would consider the national geographic sponsored text, that glencoe carries. I have never used it but I always wanted to try All american history by celeste rake. She covers American history in 2 volumes to be covered in 2 years for middle school students. i don't know if the material would be highschool level reading though. I thought about using both text in one year to complete the American History credit, but I would think you have to supplement with high level readers.
TIA!
i am not sure if I did the quotes right above; I just wanted to share my thoughts. If I didn't quote properly , my advanced apologies. I am still learning how to use the board.
Good Luck.

Hello,
i am not a macbook expert, but I don't believe that you can airplay from one mac to another.
The sharing option would work if you are trying to airplay to a pair of speakers. For example I can set a pair of speakers in each room and send music to the rooms I desire, but I need an airport to do that or a blue toothconnection. Currently, I can share from my mac to my tv, because I have apple tv that receives the info, say a movie, to play on the screen. The same thing with the ipad. I cannot airplay from my mac to my Ipad. I have to download the itunes info to it and sync it. I don't believe you can sink 2 macs. As far as I know you would have to transfer your itunes library. Unless you are going to connect the macs physically, but I think what you are talking about is the airplay option. HTH

I am not sure, but you might like the following:
If you teach kids to write you gotta have this book by marjorie something
The Write Stuff by rae--This soundslike the one you might want
Story starters by andreola
Kids Write ( can' think of the author but it belons to that williamson series of kid books)
I can look at the wirte stuff and if you teach kids to write book table of contents, I have to just dig the out. The other 2 I am sure off, I am in the process of trying to decide which one to purchase next. Amazon sometimes will let you take a sneak peak at the table of contents to see if it what you want. :001_smile:
Good luck

I used this program with my oldest DS about 6 years ago. My second ds is using it now and loves it. The ladies that work there are wonderful. I am glad that someone opened their heart to you.

You are really organized. I like the character study by bf, I plan to do that over a 2 year span though, possibly 3 . I am going to be using stow and ffl after we are done with Latl blue. I never heard of bilbo plan, looks like fun.
I feel ashamed....I need to replan my first grade course outline......The break between my 13 year old and my 5 was too long... :banging:

You may know this already, but Saxon has put out new books for Algebra 1 and 2. They have removed the geometry and expanded the algebra. I don't have these new books, but Cathy Duffy reviewed them recently and you can see table of contents and sample pages at christianbook.com. It has given me a lot to think about... we were previously planning to abandon Saxon before algebra but now I'm not so sure.
http://drshormann.com/2012/02/08/differences-in-3rd-and-4th-edition-saxon-algebra-1/
I thought of jumping to the fourth edition , but I read the above blog about what is going on with the saxon curricula and I decided to stay away for fourth Ed. I also found other discussion that pulled me away from fourth. From what I gather it is not homeschool friendly, no dvd guidance and the solution manual is basically just an answer key.
The more I talk, the more I am deciding to stay with Saxon and just supplement the hands on activities for the geometry.

Would he like something like Patty Paper Geometry for the hands on component?
Thanks for the link this definitely looks like something he would like. Ds is looking over my shoulder and said Thanks.
-
When you mention a "hands on" geometry course' date=' what do you mean?
Advanced Math is trigonometry and pre-calculus. The geometry is spread throughout Saxon's Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and the first half of Advanced Math. Many schools give a full credit for the first half of Advanced Math and a full credit is earned for geometry at that time as well. So, doing alg 1, alg 2 and 1st half of AM gives four math credits. The 2nd half of AM needs to be done to consider it pre-calculus.[/quote']
We were at coop a 2 years ago and my ds met a boy that was doing jacob's math. He told him it wa really hands on. He told my ds he had activities that had him draw alot, plus there were activities to build actual items. Now that I am talking about I wonder if his mom just added these activities in. My ds was on the pursuit of wanting to do the same type of geometry class. I am starting to lean on the " why fix if it is not broken.. " frame of thought.
On that note, thanks for correcting me I don't know why I thought they would get a credit in trig if they finish Advance mathematics ( your right it is precalc)
Thanks for letting me think out loud... i am a pre- planner. I need to see the 4 year out look. I don't mind tweaking and changing things to what ds needs, but I need a plan. I am just trying to make the right choices.

Thank you everyone for sharing, it really was helpful. :001_smile:

I haven't used it yet, (we are doing geography this year) but Oak Meadow uses a Glencoe World History text book. There is a syllabus. They don't offer traditional tests though.
Off topic:
I don't know if your interested but glencoe has a website for their books. On that website they have multiple choice questions, which you could use as a test.

It sounds like your son likes their texts, so I'm not sure why you'd want to change. :)
I was trying to avoid for him to do the double geometry since the saxon alg1 and saxon alg 2 course include geometry. Then he would be left with half of advance mathematics to just cover the geometry credit or just complete the whole course to get the half of trig credit. Ds wanted a separate hands on geometry course though, well it made it an issue. I do see what your saying. thanks for the input, I am still thinking....

Currently my ds is doing Saxon prealgebra and like it.
I am now trying to decide if we should switch from saxon to chalk dust algebra. He recently told me he really like geometry and he would like to take a geometry course, which made me think of Jacobs geometry. I know Saxon includes geometry but he wants a hands on course for that specific class, he is good at building, just a natural when it comes to th subject.
This is what my ds needs in his algebra program which is does not come natural:
For it to be broke down in steps
Repetition
Practice at word problems
He can be independent but likes instruction
He can learn in units or increments
From your experiences with the programs which looks like a better fit. I could really use the advice.

my high school is finishing this for 9th grade and I am wondering what people might be using after that. I am torn between continuing on the history cycle or just doing u.s. history next year. Would love to know peoples plans.
thanks

I am still trying decide to use this series because of the same reason what do I do afterwards? I also wish their was an activity guide. I know I am not answering your question... I wish I was more help. I am hoping others post their experience.

Here ya go! This is what I am using next year. I just have to schedule the other stuff in I am going to use!
Your awesome ! I really like this idea. Thanks for sharing.

I am going in the middle of dividing my boys room up. I am using ceiling hooks, they sell real decorative ones if that is an issue for them. I am then hanging tie curtains, I haven't found them yet. Worse comes to worse I will add ties myself. My boys live int he attic room with slanted ceilings and it makes it difficult, but I know it will work.

It sounds like one to me. I see allergic reactions many times with my youngest ds ( he suffers from an orphan disease). It is not your usual , but it happens sometimes in the form that you described because it starts as an intolerance (So, that is the way the doctors explain it to me) then builds to the allergy.
I hope you feel better.

I don't know if your set in writing or if you have an android, iphone, ipad, but there are a few aps that really help. I currently am using the calorie counter. I really like it, I have lost weight with the calorie counter ap. You can search the food on it and it tells you how many calories it has.

I love llatl, it really motivated my ds when he was in 3rd and 4th grade. It bumped him out of the I don't like english class. He like their copwork passages and the way they covered spelling (it is light on the spelling). Most of all he loved the literature and activities that went with it.

Well, that is just plain rude. I am in an interracial marriage. I am 100% spanish (born and raised in the usa) and my husband is caucasian( he can trace his family line all the way back to the mayflower). It is unfortunate, but we have dealt with the same issue when we first married. I love them dearly, but I didn't tolerate it for the sake of my sanity and children. What I have learned over the years is that they find it to be humorous and really didn't think they hurting my feelings. Family can make things complicated

I am still trying to decide on a writing program for the coming year. Does this cover highschool essays as well? I looked it up and states grades 1 to 12 and everyone seems to be using for the younger years though.
-
I used FIAR with my ds's, (my oldest is now 17). The loved literature based learning when they were younger. I think you will find FIAR a fun resource to use, but I also think you are going to want it more as a supplement. FIAR Introduces the book, where it was written, the author intention and itl will also tell you the setting of the book if it is an real life location. Then it is broke down in secions Science, history, math, so on... under each heading you will find activities.

The writing assignments were varied from hard to easy with lots of choices for each unit. Besides the writing, each unit had vocabulary and discussion questions for the book read as well as literary skills discussed. This is the first program I used that ds has not complained about.
Can you please share with me a little more information. I am wondering what the writing assignments consist of, are they genral essay prompts to promote writing or are the writing assignments geared toward the book that is being read in the unit. Are all the writing assignments paragraph assignments or essays.
thanks.
