  1. I will try to make this short and hopefully not too complicated.  My youngest son repeated 6th grade on paper (for various reasons - mostly age and maturity), but he went on with many of the 7th grade curricula - including Math via Teaching Textbooks.  For the upcoming school year, he will be (on paper) a 7th grader, and I would like to spend this year making sure he has the basics down in math.  He is not the best in this subject, but he does okay.  I just don't want to move him in to pre-algebra until I know he is ready.  What I am looking for is a suggestion for this "review" of the basics.  He loves the computer based teaching and whatever we use does need to be something he can do relatively independently.

  2. MAIMOM - that was so beautifully written and you are oh so right.  Since he got his driver's license in August, I have really had a slap in the face of reality with regards to him.  He is a wonderful young man and I just can't imagine life once he leaves my nest.  It breaks my heart more each day...in a bitter sweet kind of way.  A week after he turned 16, he got a job and he has managed to work upwards of 28 hours this school year while attending an online Chemistry class along with his regular school day.  He now adds in 12-16 hours of ACT prep each week and time with a tutor as well.  I love watching him become a responsible young man and my heart is so overjoyed to have him here for another year.  Thank you for speaking your heart!  Such true words.

  3. Lori D. - thank you for all of that great info - especially regarding the ACT.  We are actually working with PrepScholar which guarantees the 4 point increase and we hired a tutor through them that he meets with for 2 hours a week.  I am glad to hear someone recommend that being as that is the course we took.  In our state, the 25 ACT allows him to graduate with Honors through our Category 4 school.  He is also likely to be accepted to the colleges he has chosen with that score; however, what we are looking for is those scholarships (of course).

We did decide to just do the dual enrollment option this year and pay per credit hour for the 2 extra classes.

Thank you to everyone for your input.

Next issue - Trig or Pre-Cal and which program.  LOL  I am searching the plethora of info on that now.

  4. In TN, 2 classes (up to 7 credit hours) is free with a grant we have available.  I want him to take around 4 classes per semester and we are looking at paying per credit hour at the rate of $800 per hour for anything over the 7.  Granted, we are choosing a costly school but it is the one he hopes to continue in once he graduates - so this is worth it for us.  I guess you are right and it does make more sense to pay the roughly 10K extra.  I am just hoping for some scholarship money to help with college and dual enrollment doesn't allow for any scholarships.

  5. My oldest son is finishing up his Junior year in high school.  He is absolutely beyond me now and ready for college.  Next year, his Senior year, we had planned to do dual enrollment.  However, he only has 2 classes left for high school and he already has a 25 on the ACT and is taking it again in April hoping to raise at least to a 29 or 30.  He is doing an intensive practice to achieve this goal and I am confident that he will.  So, I am wondering now if there is a way for me to graduate him early and go ahead and enroll him in college for Fall 2016.  If anyone has advice on this, I would so greatly appreciate it.  Can he skip those last two credits or does he need to cram them in real quick?  Can he be a Freshman in college and a senior in high school at the same time just to get those last two credits in?  Ugh - can someone who has BTDT help me?!

  6. Yes, he was legally allowed to start Kindergarten in our state when we did.  He is Sept 29 and the cutoff was Oct 1 when he started.  They have since changed it to a Sept 1 cutoff, so he would no longer have been able to start had he been a few years younger.

I am pretty comfortable to have him repeat the 6th year on paper.  I appreciate all the feedback.  We do not plan to send him to school ever - but the future is not guaranteed and if I were to pass away tomorrow, then yes, he would have to go to school.

Testing is only a piece of the puzzle - but I am starting to see an academic gap in his weaker subjects as we keep pushing ahead and he is not connecting.  I had a teacher once tell me that late birthday kids do sometimes hit that gap where they take a bit longer to connect with abstract concepts and such compared to their earlier birthday peers.  I think we have hit that gap in Math in particular.

He is fine with it.  What grade he is in has never meant a whole lot to him anyway.

Our state does not "require" testing as we are part of an umbrella school, but I do test mine with BJU Stanford each year.

  7. Has anyone here done this solely on the basis of maturity and time?  My son has an end of Sept birthday, but was reading and interested in school at a very young age.  I started him in "Kindergarten" when he was 4 (he turned 5 that Sept).  In the beginning, all was well, but now that he is hitting the middle school grades, I am seeing a big difference in his maturity versus that of his peers.  I have also seen a decline in test scores for two years in a row which makes me wonder if some of that could be his age and maturity as well.  In our school work, he made straight A's for his 6th grade year...but his testing does not line up with that.  I know he is not very math-y and that could be it, or it could be curriculum choice, etc.  But I think the fact that he is likely an entire year younger than some of the peers he is evaluated against for standardized testing (and later, the ACT and SAT) - and probably more like 6 months younger than the majority of children in his grade - sets him at a disadvantage right off the bat.

Holding him back would be mostly "on paper" - we were already holding him behind in church activities (like going up to the youth group...he is SO not ready) and summer camp (he is going with the kids coming out of 3rd-5th grades rather than 6th -8th grades).  He will continue on and do work on whichever level he is at (which is mostly 7th grade), but this extra year gives us time to go back if we need to or to take more time in pre-algebra and build that foundation.  And, besides, he can always graduate early if something changes or he can do dual enrollment entirely his senior year.

I guess I wanted to get a BTDT or support - this is such a tough decision for us.

  8. It has been years since I posted here!  Ha!  Fun to be back and read.  So many names I don't recognize (or course) and a few I do still.  We found and fell in love with Heart of Dakota pretty early on, so, for YEARS, I was set on curriculum.  So many things have happened over the years leading us to finally put away our beloved HOD for both kids.  My older son is going to be a junior this year (I so remember typing out his 6th grade curriculum list in my signature too!  Where did that time go??!) and I am trying to get him as college ready as possible.  Last year, we used a combo approach to English/Lit, and while I loved the grammar and writing we did, the literature left something to be desired.  It was mostly, "hey, read this!"  So, this year, I picked up Switched on Schoolhouse English III and plan to give it a try.  However, after looking at it last night, I am none too impressed.  So - this long post to ask, if you have a high school LA that you love, be it an AIO or mix-match, please share with me.

NOTE:  Last year, we used Easy Grammar ultimate for 10th grade and Essentials in Writing 10.  We loved both of those.  The lit was what I felt was really lacking for us.

  9. This.... Seriously, I would not bath the Mama. I would put the meds on and leave them in somewhere like the garage.... You'll have to do the meds, then do the kitties... then put them back together. I'd also ask my vet about the pill for the Mama that kills fleas on contact. If she's hungry, perhaps she'd eat that in a pill pocket or smushed with salmon or something like that. Then put Mama and babies back together. Seriously, for the love of your other animals, don't put them in the same vicinity till you get them cleared from the vet. At this point, I think a Feline Leukemia test (and whatever the vet recommends) could be done only on the Mama cat.... If you're gonna keep the cat, why don't you pay the money and have the vet techs do your work :)

Absolutely! Do NOT put those cats near your other animals (especially other cats) until you can have them tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV...and until you get rid of the fleas. Keep litter boxes seperate for quite some time and until you know if momma is having normal poos. I almost killed my elderly cat once when I brought in a stray that had giardia!

  10. You should be able to put flea meds on momma cat. I would NOT bathe a feral mother cat. LOL

The babies will do GREAT with dawn dish soap and a flea comb. I bottlefed an abandoned baby that was 2 weeks old at the time and covered with fleas. We used the dawn on him twice and the flea comb every day for a week. He was confined to a cage/box so I did not get fleas in my house. If you treat momma cat with "Revolution," it will clear up fleas in just a few hours. Revolution is wonderful - and does intestinal parasites at the same time. A flea comb will get the flea dirt and any survivors out of her fur. Confine her to a room with a hard floor until then.

(Who only has 7 cats from which to base her experience. LOL)

  11. This is an enlightening thread. I never knew it could be hormonal! I have always gotten palpatations with anxiety, but last week, I also had them every day. The minute my cycle started, the palps stopped. Glad to know I am not alone.

I agree with others about the holter monitor. I have had several friends who have had to wear one and no one has complained. Best of luck to you...and thank you for posting this enlightening thread!

  12. We use teaching textbooks and even my 8 year old 4th grader can do it relatively unassisted. We are doing TT4 and Pre-Algebra this year and math is one of our best subjects. You have to give your child the placement test and sometimes, coming from another math program, TT can be "behind" - but I truly have not had an issue at all and my kids score well above avg on their standardized tests.

  13. Very cool! Congrats!!

Like you, we pay our cards off every month. We have several of them and I have NEVER been charged interest...however, I have collected over $700 in cash (Bank of America Preferred Cash Rewards - not points and Capital One Cash Rewards), 4 free hotel nights (Starwood and Hilton Honors), a round trip flight (Skymiles Am Ex), $60 in Gap clothes (Gap), $120 in gas discounts (Exxon Preferred), and countless coupons (American Eagle and Gap) over the course of the last 9 months. Credit cards can be awful...or they can be a blessing. My credit cards work for me...I am not a slave to them!

ETA: on the Sam's note - YEP...we have one Mastercard just for use at Sam's club. So silly that they do not take visa. That is literally ALL for which we use that one card.

  14. And I find they need lots of refresher courses. Just the other day he said something in passing that made me realize he had NO CLUE about something....I can't remember what it was now, but I definitely cleared it up for him.

Haha - That reminds me...once my ds 13 (he was about 11 at the time) was talking about s*x and babies and such and he said something so innocent, but so funny. It was something along the lines of, "but you only have to have s*x one time for each baby you want, right?" I didn't realize, until that moment, that he had no reason to realize he would actually want to have s*x one day. In his naive eyes, even though he understood the mechanics, it was just the "way babies were made." Honestly, I let him think that for a bit longer (until puberty took over)...cause, well, while I am good with talking about it...I surely don't want to think about him actually doing it anytime soon!

  15. Of course, my first response was, "Where did you hear that??" Apparently, she had been listening to a Christian radio station (Air 1) on her ipod and discovered and read a story about human trafficking. A young girl on a date was drugged, kidnapped and taken to another country to be a s*x slave.

I realize trafficking is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, but is it really something that needs to be talked about on a Christian radio station???? A radio station that young children listen to?? A station I thought I could trust to not put inappropriate material for children on its website?? Obviously, this is not a topic I want to discuss with my 11 year old!! I'm so frustrated right now! She was so scared after reading that article. To make matters worse, I've been preparing to have "the talk" with her, and now, she is going to associate s*x with rape and slavery. :(

My 13 year old and I have talked about s*x many times in his life. He started asking questions when he was 4 and I was pregnant with his brother. He knows more than a lot of kids his age. However, anytime he has a question, he asks me and we discuss it. I think your daughter is old enough to know what happens to young girls (some even younger then HER) in other places. You never know - this could be God's way of preparing your daughter for missions or ministry to these people. I try to take any and every opportunity I can to teach my sons my views of the things in the world before someone else can teach theirs! Can you imagine if your dd had asked a friend what s*x trafficking was...and then they googled it on the internet? *shudder at the thought*

  16. First, God "punished" both Adam and Eve. :)

Secondly, as in all relationships, SIN changes things and those first sins changed humanity's relationship to God. Even though they could no longer stay in God's presence in the garden, God gave them coverings and protected them as they went out into the world. He still blessed them in many ways.

We do not know specifically if Adam and Eve repented of their sin, but it's hinted that they at the very least continue in obedience to Him by offering sacrifices--God's requirement now that they cannot be in God's holy presence--because their sons continue the practice themselves. Sin must be paid for and before Jesus' sacrifice, *those* sacrifices atoned for the sin and God determined what would be pleasing to Himself. But He also made it possible for people to do it, even though it wasn't always easy!

Thirdly, as far as murderers, rapists, etc. we see the example of the thief on the cross next to Jesus during the crucifixion. What happens? The thief acknowledges and accepts WHO Jesus is and that He is innocently giving His life. Jesus SEES his heart and tells him he will be in paradise! That is awesome and gives hope to anyone. Our own sense of justice, warped that it is, honestly, sees anyone worse than us in sinful practice and feel that it isn't fair that a person could sin "so horribly" and still get to be in paradise! But God's standard is holiness. We cannot reach it ourselves and that's why we need Jesus.

God also sees into the heart in ways that we cannot. A person truly changed by Him would not continue to live his or her life the same way (maybe not immediately at first, but change would be EVIDENT on the inside and out). We know that God's sense of justice is perfect. We do not know that every deathbed confession of faith is sincere, but HE does. We should want hearts to change and not hold on to the idea that anyone is not good enough to get into heaven because WE do not "do good" to get into heaven ourselves! So trusting in God's perfect standard being applied to hearts we cannot fully know as He can eases my mind on the subject a lot!

:iagree: THis is well written and states my beliefs just perfectly.

  17. But, if god is all knowing then he knew it was gonna happen, anyway and just set her up to fail, no?

God did know what Eve would do before she did it. God also knew what Jesus would do before He did it. Praise God, he gave us a savior. God knew that, given free-will, we would sin - just like Eve. Was he supposed to give us a pain-free, protected and perfect life while we did vile and horrible things??
