Thanks, this was really nice to read. My husband is active duty US Navy and we are 6 months into a two year deployment. I'm having one of those days when I think it really sucks.

Hi blessed!
My husband is active duty US Navy, he is actually stationed in Japan right now but we stay here. We are fortunate to be partially insulated from the high cost of living here; the military covers our housing and we have access to the commissary, where groceries are substantially cheaper and tax free. We are also on the main island of Oahu. Maui is more expensive because of additional shipping costs. It is tougher without military perks. My friends that are local either live with multiple generations under one roof, are professional, or hold multiple jobs.
Kauai is the rainiest island, but we all get rain in the winter from the cool winds coming in from the northeast. The winter also brings very strong surf conditions to north and eastern shores. If you are coming in the November with small children, I would Definitely stat on the south side for safety reasons alone.

Finally finished reading Underground History of Education (online) and found it quite engaging. It really drew me in, but there were no (that I found) citations to any historical sources. It appeals to me on a very intuitive level, but seems a bit one-sided as well. I think I may just read it again and take detailed notes and follow up on my own. Anyone care to chime in on this? I had not even heard of this guy until I started researching homeschooling last winter.

Hi blessed
We live in Honolulu and have island hopped over to Maui quite a few times. It is beautiful. Food is expensive. Do you plan on taking all of the kids? What time of year do you plan on going? Oct thru March is the rainy season. Wailea on the south side is wonderful. I would definitely examine what your goal for the trip is. Maui is actually quite a large island and you will absolutely need a car to do any sightseeing. There is much to be said for the slow pace of island life, I would be careful not to overschedule. There are snorkel tours available or you just rent equipment and venture out at any of many nice spots. Dining out in Maui can be world class. We usually get a room with a kitchenette so we can make light lunches but it is still expensive: milk is $7.50/gal, bread $4/load, 1lb deli meat is easily $10....

Thank you both for the info. I may just have to mine through it, even though it is not geared toward a homeschool setting. I am very interested in becoming proficient in the Socratic and/or Harkness style teaching method(s), and perhaps the discussion section of the book will have some useful tips. Cheers!

Has anyone read Paideia Proposal by Adler? Read some reviews on Amazon and it looks interesting, but there were also a few reviews stating that it is a great educational method "in theory". Has anyone given it a go?

I LOVE Managers of Their Chores. The older three have 'chore packs' that they complete upon waking and after dinner. In use for nine weeks and it has been FABULOUS. It was a process to implement, but the results have been worth it. I do a lot less cleaning and much more guiding. The kids are really developing a work ethic and sense of responsibility without an allowance.

I repost this because it is relevant
I believe the passages cited from OT Leviticus to support the oppression of LGBT community and gay marriage are legalistic, misinterpreted and completely taken out of context, and in this instance, have no relevance to my calling as a Christian.
We all <Christians> recognize the authority and importance of God's word. The issue here is interpretation.
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividingthe word of truth." II Tim 2:15."Rightly dividing" means to discern and apply the scripture in its proper historical setting.
As in Leviticus' proper historical setting.
This also applies to the Pauline condemnation of 'homosexual offenders'. I interpret this as a denouncement of coercive activities, not of homosexuality itself. It is analogous to calling a heterosexual relations a sin because God does not like rape.
Homosexuality as sinful is not a reflection of all Christian thought. I believe that people of all sexual orientations and gender identities share the worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God. I belong to an evangelical Lutheran church that embraces this view. I can link to theolgoical resources. Not sure if that is allowed outside of a PM.
Respectfully to all,
and with love in Christ,
Shannon

Very sweet picture :001_smile:
How about Mary? Or Miss Lennox? Little girl that nobody wanted with bad manners who was transformed in the English countryside. Love, work and the garden heal deep wounds...

I'll stick with Eileen Fisher, thank you.

...it's one thing to think something, and another to express it...
I absolutely agree with this. I will admit that I have knee-jerk judgmental reactions to certain thing; I think that is part of being human. But I try to think or pray before I speak. Still working on it. :tongue_smilie: Someone once told me that it is not what happens to you, but how you react, that matters. So I try to practice patience and understanding with the young, the old and the foolish - for at some point I will have been all of these.
I should not be on the internet so much, but I am practicing patience with myself

My criteria would be low cost of living and no state income tax. There is a reason lots of people retire to Florida. I believe Washington State has no state income tax, I am not sure what the cost of living is there.
Our home in Florida is on a nice lake and it has a pool. The housing market is still terrible there. We bought it as a foreclosure and there are lots of places across the country that we could not have had something nearly as nice. Dh travels for work so employment there really isn't an issue for us.
I feel ya'. This is one reason I do not want to do California. Maybe Texas? Wyoming would be nice imo but brutal winters and DH says no....

Well...............
What does he do and/or what is he planning on doing when he gets out? That is going to help with many destination choices. And, how long does he have?
When we are done (in 5 years IF he gets out at 20) we are talking about several places. We met in Vegas and are NOT going back (you'd have to offer us a TON of money for me to consider it). Dh's "boat-wife" is planning on TN just outside of Nashville. We are discussing Phoenix. But...
It all comes down to what is he going to do when he gets out?
Also, what do you like? Rain? Sun? Warm? HOT? Cold? Cool?
Personally, I've given A LOT of thought to going back to Portland, OR (I went to high school there). But, there aren't any local jobs there for my dh. Just enough sun to keep me warm, but not HOT HOT. As Jerin said, base access.... though I hear that the medical access isn't as easy, but I figure that will work itself out.
Good luck!
Kris
Hi Kris
He is a CTR...probably not going to have anything to do with it after navy life though...if he has his way anyway.
I'd like four seasons. A bit of snow in the winter. No hot summers please. Somewhere I can grow things. Somewhere west of the Mississippi....
Have thought about Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, maybe Reno/Lake Tahoe area. I have no clue. Dh likes San Diego. I'm not into it, but I could probably be sold on it.
What is your DH going to do?

For a supply box that can work as a base for many projects you may find online, and can also stand alone:
Card stocks, construction paper, white and black paper, tissue paper, safety scissors, colored craft tape (I recommend something like this - the adhesives on traditional scotch and duct tapes can frustrate little hands,) glue sticks and liquid glue, geometric stencils, watercolor paints, beeswax crayons, twine, pencils (colored or not), pens (colored or not) and a hole punch.
Cut the papers down to half size if you literally want everything in a small box. I limit access to paper because they will fly through it...
It is also cool to have homemade play dough (cheap, safe, better) and cornstarch around.
Of course none of this is 'necessary' - Kids can be brilliantly creative with a box of crayola, last week's paper and a glue stick, but I find that these supplies give them ample opportunity to explore different media and techniques. Fun stuff!

Thanks :grouphug: I will talk to her in the morning.

My children are similar in age to yours and I had the same problem, so I developed a token system. See pic.
It really helped my children 'visualize' the use of their time. Watching a sibling play costs the same amount of time as playing alone would. If sister plays 20 min on the computer and brother wants to watch, he can now see the consequence on board. They have actually learned to wait their turn (for the most part.) It has also been a great system because getting tokens taken away is a consequence of bad behavior. It's an "If X, then minus two tokens" kind of deal....They get it.
I loves it. :tongue_smilie:

I have multiple art boxes for multiple ages and purposes...
What age is this for?
Is it for independent art work or will you always be working with them?
Do you want a cute finished project or are you more concerned with process, fine motor skills and creativity?

DD8 did not listen to instruction and something of mine is now broken. Plus she is denying and not taking ownership of the situation.
I calmly sent her to her room.
Please pray for me to control my anger because I really want to confront but I do not trust my words right now and she is, really, just a little girl.
It wouldn't be as much fun if they were born spiritually actualized, right?
right?

Well it is not curriculum per se, but every Friday afternoon, instead of language arts, my oldest daughter and I are going to work on a quilt together while the younger ones nap. :001_wub: I am looking forward to that.
